Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Guys, Cola's K rate is 26% and Smoaks is 27%. Smoaks BB rate is 4% higher than Cola's. Its surprising but look it up. It seems worse for Smoak cause he has had some brutal games lately. Ask for Cola to come in if you think he will hit LHP and we can suck up the loss on D, but don't think he doesn't K a lot too. except cola has wrc of 144 vs. smoak's 104. that is significant bautista also has 144 wrc this year

I think his rate of ground balls finding holes is not sustainable. Cola isn't as good on D. Anyway they can platoon Cola in some.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 By that logic, Edwin was usless before we traded for Tulo and for his first 30 games here. Well, they were using Cola more then, right? But I forget who was 5th then..martin?
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Hey now, in his prime John Smoltz was a pretty good hitter in his day for a pitcher. shows you how old I am....:-)
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Wow, he's looking alot better. Lets see if he can get back into swinging again.
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Wow, he's looking alot better. Lets see if he can get back into swinging again. But he was done for the year you said...
Billy Bats Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 throwing and catching today. says he feels great and normal. my guess is he'll be back for the last series before playoffs

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 even if they've already clinched? I would think so. Even if they've clinched and he's able to play I think they'll get him some playing time to make sure he's ready to go, some at bats to get his timing, etc.

Anyway they can platoon Cola in some. you think maybe that because Smoak can literally only put the ball in play on around 20% of the field in fair territory (Johnny Pull Hard) that might have a huge impact on his BABIP? or do you just stare at numbers and say, "gotta be luck"
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 But he was done for the year you said... I still don't think he'll be able to play. Maybe he'll come back for 1 game before re-injuring himself
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Tulo 'excited' about how recovery is going Blue Jays shortstop taking swings and fielding grounders, but no return date set http://m.bluejays.mlb.com/news/article/151620682/troy-tulowitzki-improving-after-injury "Taking swings" is music to my ears.
nextyear Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 This has nothing to do with the above conversation regarding BABIP. The fact that BABIP doesn't include home runs makes it difficult to consider BABIP numbers as valid for home run hitters since batting AVE includes home runs and BABIP doesn't. I don't see why BABIP doesn't include home runs (other than the fact that they aren't technically "balls in play"). If baseball fields were 500 feet from home plate to the fences then most home runs would drop in for a hit (probably double, triple or four-bagger).
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Tulo comin' back. Fo' sure. Book it! http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/anthopoulos-optimistic-tulowitzki-will-return-for-rays-series/ Took about 40 swings yesterday. They showed a short clip of him outside taking BP before the gm before rain shut it down. Of course you always wonder if it will be a Travis-like return where the injury gets aggravated.

I trust an All Star Veteran like Tulo to be more aware of his body and recovery status particularly given his history than a rookie on a new team like Travis... Wow when I read that back I sound just like Zaun but my point still stands. I would be more concerned if we hadn`t seen him on the field this early...... being rushed back would be no sign of him in warmups plus BP and his name on the lineup card next Tuesday, this gradual timeline and increase in his activities a week before the playoffs suggests to me an actual recovery rather than a hastily attempted one.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 you think maybe that because Smoak can literally only put the ball in play on around 20% of the field in fair territory (Johnny Pull Hard) that might have a huge impact on his BABIP? or do you just stare at numbers and say, "gotta be luck" I'm not making this an either/or. We can use Cola against LHP and Smoak against RHP. Ride the hot hands. Smoak is pull happy on the ground. You are correct, and because of that the shift will likely keep his BAPIP at .250. That's been consistent with him all career. I do think Cola's .410 BABIP and .380 wOBA are unsustainable, although I agree because he does go the other way his BAPIP should be higher than Smoaks. Not that big of a spread though. Their K % is virtually dead even now at 27%.

I dont know who else on this board is a medical doctor, but I said you couldn't judge an injury without seeing the images (which none of us actually have).
