dizzydean1 Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Fair enough but I just don't see how Shapiro was even on the radar. I make my first post on this forum with an opinion and someone is calling for a mod? Wow what a welcome.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I am absolutely sickened by the news of Mark Shapiro coming to Toronto. The guy was an inept GM who for some inexplicable reason was promoted to President in Cleveland. He lived off the Bartolo Colon trade for years. I have absolutely no idea why the Jays would target him as the successor to Beeston. I fear a statement move like firing AA will happen sometime in the off season. This is a sad day for Blue Jays fans who are so excited about the legitimate WS contender that we now have. Shapiro can only screw this up. Great first and final post.

baubau Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 So this means we are NOT resinging David Price now at over 200M? The casuals won't like this.
dizzydean1 Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Well I don't see how he could give it the thumbs down if he was interested in the job. Hopefully my fear of him making a statement move like firing AA won't happen.

I would say that the odds Shapiro would be interested in doing this are very, very small. The biggest free agent contract given to a pitcher under his tenure was Kerry Wood's 2-year deal in 2008.

To be fair, it should be noted that being under a very stritct and low budget he probably couldn't aim for any higher even if he wanted to.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I don't see Shapiro letting go of AA. Team is booming, on and off the field. No need to make wholesale changes. He can impact the team's direction without rocking the boat. For example, he could direct AA to trade Bautista or EE for a nice return in the off season and oversee the actual return before approving any deal. We'll see what happens.

baubau Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I am most excited is that he may force AA to trade Sanchez. Shapiro: "Alex, he provides almost no value as a starter and marginal as a reviler. Trade him in that package for a real starter." AA: "But Mark. DAT FASTBALL" Shapiro: "Yes Alex and he can't control it. TRADE HIM OR I FIRE YOU DAMMIT!"

Also, usually when a guy brings in "his guys", it's a whole team from the front office he just left... I don't think Cleveland is letting everyone walk...

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Shapiro is involved with the Competition Committee and with Digital Ticketing. He has also overseen some renovations at Progressive Field so you can expect him to continue the work Beeston was doing in trying to install a grass field at the RC. He will have plenty of things to work on, plus I'm sure he'll take some time to get used to living in a f***ing igloo.

But yes, his trade value is probably decently high right now.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 If the Jays are successful this year there is no reason for AA to stay around and play second fiddle. AA is not going to like having to go through someone for baseball decisions when prior to.this he has had total.control 3 playoff appearances in 15 years of Indians control
dizzydean1 Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I wonder if the Jays go back to losing if Mark Shapiro will tell the fans to stay away like he did in Cleveland after many fans started voicing their displeasure?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I don't see Shapiro getting rid of AA. 2 of the biggest strengths of AA is his contract negations and his willingness to grind down other GMs by asking for trades non stop. In that sense AA is a perfect man for the job. Shapiro will have the final say I would assume so he can approve whether or not he likes what AA is doing. I also don't see AA leaving if he is offerered an extension. It really seems like he loves Toronto and with a young family it would take a hell of a lot from him to move.

Wikipedia is your friend https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland#Climate The lake effect also causes a relative differential in geographical snowfall totals across the city: while Hopkins Airport, on the city's far West Side, has only reached 100 inches (254 cm) of snowfall in a season three times since record-keeping for snow began in 1893,[58] seasonal totals approaching or exceeding 100 inches (254 cm) are not uncommon as the city ascends into the Heights on the east, where the region known as the 'Snow Belt' begins. Extending from the city's East Side and its suburbs, the Snow Belt reaches up the Lake Erie shore as far as Buffalo Plus moving from Cleveland to Toronto has added benefits like enjoying a city where on some days there are no gun-related deaths and there is an economy...and buildings...and life.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 One 90 win season(knock on wood!) in 5 years and a bottom 10 farm system. For every Donaldson trade there's a Syndergaard trade and for every Travis trade there's a Gomes trade. A GM isn't just responsible for the sucess of the big league club in a given year. If we were to rank how every organization did in the last 5 years, not just in wins and playoff success but also accumulation of assets and getting value for the buck, do you think the Jays would be in the top 15 ? I somehow doubt it. Just because AA's successes have been backloaded doesn't mean he deserves an extention. Shapiro should be given complete freedom to hire who ever he wants. AA hasn't done enough to be given immunity under new management. 1. The farm system isn't bottom 10. 2. 2015 may give the Jays a 90 win season and a playoff spot is pretty much locked up now. But the way this roster is constructed, this historically elite offense is locked in for 2016 plus or minus a Colabello with only two players being paid at market rates. This team is a contending team next year as well. So it would be 2 contending seasons out of 6, not one out of 5, whether or not he is actually here in 2016. 3. Yapping about his mistakes is a little like yapping about Bautista not being an elite player because he stunk it up in the mid-2000's. For whatever his mistakes were between 2012-13, he has demonstrated that he has learned from them over the last year. Dumping a guy who is finally productive at his job is not the best idea.

thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Comment from a poster on another forum (primarily unrelated to baseball/sports) that I am a member of that is a knowledgeable and avid Indians fan. Shapiro is very baseball savvy IMO. He has made a number of trades over the years that have been rather lopsided towards the Indians including getting Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips and Cliff Lee for Bartolo Colon. Others include Asdrubal Cabrera for Eduardo Perez, Carlos Santana for Casey Blake and Chris Perez for Mark DeRosa. Although other pieces of these trades didn't work out, we also got Carlos Carrasco in the Cliff Lee trade and Michael Brantley in the CC Sabathia trade for players who were about to enter free agency and weren't going to resign in Cleveland. I'm sure there are other decent trades I'm missing, but those are a few that stand out that netted Cleveland key players for rentals to other teams that occurred while Shapiro was GM. Shapiro was also involved in player development in the 90's into the early 2000's and we developed key plays such as CC, Johnny Peralta and Victor Martinez in that timeframe. Shapiro recently as president has generally let Antonetti have free reign (and Antonetti has pulled off several similar, one sided deals, including fleecing Toronto for Yan Gomes and Mike Aviles for Esmil Rogers) in terms of GM duties and has focused on ticket strategies, ballpark upgrades and the overall image of the Indians. I'd have to say that if Shapiro has some involvement in player signings/trades/development in Toronto that he can have a positive impact due to his ability to spot young talent and also with the additional financial resources he'll be afforded there. Overall I think this is a good move for the Blue Jays and a loss for the Indians. At the end of the day he's leaving the Indians in a position to be perennial contenders through at least 2020 (although a lot of the recent credit goes to our current GM). And, we're playing each other this week, which will be interesting. I'm hoping that the Blue Jays don't quickly end the little run the Indians have been on to try to sneak back into the wild card picture, although I'm not terribly optimistic. At least we aren't throwing arms like Simon and Wolf at you this week though.
