37stieb Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 the dinger couldn't have come off the bat of Bob Bailor since he was in the NL when Lamp pitched for the Jays. yeah, Stieb got robbed of more "wins" than any Jays pitcher in history. It was a boston game. Don Baylor? I remember taking a hammer to my bed when the relief staff blew a 4 run lead in the ninth.

37stieb Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 He was also good at taking one for the team.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I assume it was another blown stieb game. speaking of Stieb ... laughable that he wasn't voted one of the Jays "Franchise Four." Stieb over Joe Carter is a no brainer. Hell, i'd take Tony Fernandez over Carter too.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I was born in 77 and a jays fan ever since! Mid 80's is my first memories. George bell my first favourite player. I used to think all the pay phones with BELL listed on them was in honour of George...not the phone company. Crime Dog and the terminator were other favorite's of mine.
37stieb Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 That was bizarre. I assume that Dave played every 4 games made the difference, as he was a "part time" player. Or... they wanted to, but couldn't find any footage of him not grabbing his crotch.
Hammer Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I followed them during their 1992 run. I would have been 13 when they won the world series for the first time.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I was 8 years old and vacationing in Canada with my parents and they took me to my first baseball game. Jorge Bell sealed what has become a life long addiction to the jays and baseball, getting me a partial scholarship too boot. Thanks Jorge!!!!

mellowgold Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Have been a fan since the late 80's. Mt first game was at Exhibition Stadium against the Rangers in '87 or '88. Pretty sure Junior Felix hit an inside-the-park homer, but the memory is getting a little hazy. I was 12 and 13 for the WS years, and was an enormous Alomar fan. Those teams pretty much cemented my status as a Jays fan for life.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 During that year and '95 I'd "simulate" every game by pitching to the wall outside the house. Different bricks would be strikes, balls, hits, etc. I'd blow through nine innings to try to come up with a prediction. I'd do this too after the Cubs games on WGN (we had one of those huge big ass satellite dishes). By the time I got home from school it would be about the 6th or 7th inning. I'd watch the rest of the game, then run outside to pitch against the back of the garage wall (only child growing up on the farm). I'd try and copy the deliveries and pitches... I still pitch competitively to this day...good times.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Hmm well I was born in 1983 and I've been watching them for as long as I can remember. Would be hard to say what year I started watching but I remember the first season in the SkyDome in 1989, I remember Moseby, Bell, and Barfield, I remember Fred McGriff being my favorite player and being heartbroken about the trade but then trying to emulate Robbie Alomar is everything I did in little league...so...a long time lol.
art_vandelay275 Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 From the very beginning. I remembered my Dad yanking me out of school (I was in elementary school then) and going together. I don't remember whether it was opening day and I'm not sure whether we were playing the White Sox. What I do remember clearly was that it was snowing (at the Ex of course) and they were giving away hockey sticks signed by all the Blue Jays as the fan souvenir. It was the coolest thing. Of course being a kid and lacking foresight, instead of putting it in a case or something like that, I actually used it and it broke soon after. Telling my American friends now about the hockey stick give away at a baseball game always gets a laugh. To them it's so Canadian. From that point on, I was hooked. Jerry Garvin and Otto Valez - they became my new heroes...

TBJ12 Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I was 10 and 11 when the Jays won back to back championships. The Alomar homerun off Eckersley in the ALCS is still the greatest baseball memory I have.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I've been a fan since 1987. I was in first two years of university when they won in 92/93. Great times. Yeah, I'm old, I know. Zip it. LOL

Governator Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Olerud was my favorite player and his jersey was the only one I owned until 3 years ago I always thought Olreud looked pretty cool with his small fitted helmet on, why wouldn't pitchers prefer that over whatever the hell Alex Torres wears?
Ogi Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I only started watching the Jays last year after the Raptors got eliminated from the playoffs. Needed something to satisfy my Toronto sports craving. Used to be one of those "baseball is boring" guys, but decided to give it a shot. Took a little time and research for me to really get into it, but this board has helped a lot with understanding advanced stats, what to look for while watching a game, and just made it a more enjoyable experience. Yeah... a lot less exciting than most of your stories but there it is.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 How long have you been a Jays fan? Are you a newbie getting a exciting taste of meaningful September ball for the first time, or a jaded, old veteran who has seen many highs and more lows over the years? I suspect many of you weren't around or interested in ball when the Jays had their halcyon years, from 1985-1994 when they were more solid than not, but I thought this would be a neat way to determine the fan demographics of our board. For me, I'm a grizzled, old fan. I started really loving the Jays in 1984 (I was in grade 7) when they had such an exciting, young team...led by my favourites Moseby, Barfield and Bell. I am still a huge fan of those guys. Anyway, enough about me... 85 - Watched the playoffs 87 - Watched the last game of the season against tigers 88 - started watching regularily, they weren't really in it that year. 10 games back most of the season 89-93 - each of these years the Jays weren't eliminated until their last game of the season. 94-97 - Cito benches Olerud for Brumfield, very strange event that sends shockwaves through the space time continuum and prevents Jays from winning... 98-2015- there are many false gods (Tim Johnson, JPR, Godfrey, AA?) but nobody can fix things Late July 2015 - fixed?? Sure looks that way... we will see how powerful the curse of Brumfield is...
Molitor Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Since some time in the late 80's, I think '88. My earliest memory of the Jays is watching a game with my dad and the Jays turned a double play in the first inning and my dad clapped his hands together loudly and yelled "DOUBLE PLAY!" I really really got into it in '92 and '93. We didn't have cable growing up so I could barely watch any games but I remember reading about it and checking the box scores in The Star the next morning all the way through the summer. Alomar was my favourite in '92 because I loved watching his defense. It was also great watching how effortless Devon White made everything look in center field. In '93, Molitor won me over. He was just such a great hitter, charismatic during interviews, and also crafty. Even though he wasn't overly fast, he'd sometimes stretch a single into a double because the outfielder was taking their time. And of course his World Series performance against Philly was amazing.
