Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I disagree. I'm talking about having a legitimate shot at winning it. 8th place is miles out and while the 4th place finish sounds nice, he only received one first place vote. Trout and Cabrera were the only ones in the discussion that year. I checked today and it seems Fangraphs have them both at 6.7. I need the decimals to find out which one is MVP When it was Trout 10ish - Cabrerra 6 the people said Trout was obviously the MVP and one was an idiot to think otherwise When it was Trout 6.5, Donaldson 6.3 they said the same, the 0.2 difference seemed just as relevant as the 4 WAR difference. Now it is 6.7x, 6.7x, please refer me to a place where I can find the decimal points so I know who is "obviously" the MVP

Riding in the car the other day and on the MLB network they were pumping Donaldson over Trout. So Donaldson is getting MVP attention outside of Canada.

And really, it's the people in the media that vote, so the more of them that are pro-Donaldson the better. No question in my mind that Trout is the overall better player, but Donaldson is putting up a year that is every bit as good as Trout's this season.

Trout got jobbed his first two years so at least JD is a worthy challenger this season. He's been unreal. On a semi related note, Bryce Harper dipped under a 200 wRC+ for the first time since like...May. Easy call for NL MVP, but time left for Goldschmidt to challenge.

Donaldson has been utterly incredible.

If one of them carries their team innto the playoffs with a monster September they will win it with an extra 0.5 WAR and the dramatics that sports writers live to write about.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 To be fair, the Angels fortunes are more dependant on Trout playing well then the Jays on Donadlson playing well. Both are awesome players. But the Angels offense is so much less deep than ours that if Trout goes MIA for a few weeks they could be f***ed. Some writers would use this as reason to give Trout the MVP over Donaldson even if they finished with identical stats.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 In the NL it's not even close. Harper leads in WAR by a mile. Even if the Nats fail to make the playoffs, he'll still win it because Goldy and the DBacks ain't making the playoffs either.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Posey might challenge actually since people seem so reluctant to vote for player on non-playoff teams.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Somewhat hilariously, Harper and Goldshmitdt lead the NL in WAR by a large margin despite both having very significant negative defensive value. The bats are just that good.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Mike Trout is the best baseball player on earth. In no way, shape, or form is Donaldson more deserving of the MVP title. Mike Trout is the MVP and its not even close. just bringing this up to the front for boxcar's sake
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Except zero people said that. I am blown away by your ineptitude. Holy f*** boxcar -- you are an idiot... don't accuse people of ineptitude unless you are 100% sure... the entire conversation was sent in this direction by a guy 'stagnag' or something who said Trout was the obvious MVP and anybody who said differently was an idiot.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 People saying Donaldson over Trout should be ashamed of themselves. Stangstag -- People are saying Donaldson over Trout should be ashamed of themselves. Boxcar -- nobody is saying that Who the f*** is boxcar anyway?? Hilary Clinton should hire him The poeple - Hilary has classified e-mails on her server -- Boxcar - no she doesn't.. I am boxcar... reality is as I say... Moggie has left the building... now is my time.... I define reality.

Tell us more how the Donaldson trade has the potential to back fire? I loved those rants.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Donaldson is the MVP front-runner right now imo. He's come up bigger for the Jays than Trout has for the Angels. Stangstag said people saying Donaldson over trout should be ashamed of themselves. You should be ashamed of yourself. I am ashamed of you. I am ashamed of this board... well not really most of the replies in this thread are pretty good... it was just a couple of posters in the "Trout is the obvious MVP" camp... but there were a couple thus the direction the conversation took.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Posey might challenge actually since people seem so reluctant to vote for player on non-playoff teams. Does Posey have strong framing numbers? If so there might actually be a solid statistical argument.

Tell us more how the Donaldson trade has the potential to back fire? I loved those rants. the path for the Donaldson trade to backfire is this: Jays just miss wild card this year... Jays struggle for next few years.... Barretto (19) becomes a top young player in the game, Lawrie puts it together in his prime years (26-28), Nolin and Gravement contribute to 2017-19 As playoff runs. guys All I've ever said is that there are ways this trade could come back and burn the Jays... If I wanted to be a popular poster all I'd have to say is this... Donaldson is the bomb!!! WE RAPED BEANE!!! PLAYOFFS!!!! short, simple, happy, positive. The rules for being popular on this board are the same as in coorporate america... you guys know this.. your trained to be simple, happy, positive, 'go-bro', people, so your bosses will give you cookies.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Right now I think Trout is still the favourite but it might come down to which team makes the playoffs. Let's say they are putting up equal offensive numbers, for argument's sake. Trout is regarded as a very good CF, and Donaldson is a very good 3B. So Trout will win if their hitting is similar and both teams make the playoffs, WAR isn't all that useful for this discussion.

I said Donaldson obviously wasn't when he finished fourth in the race two years ago.
