You failed to mention he played for the Rookies. wRC+ = 100 (i.e. average bat).

I'm actually not sure what's more crazy, that someone could have a .379 wOBA and rack up -2 WAR, or that there could be a park where a .379 wOBA shook out to a league average bat. The pre-humidor days were truly ridiculous, but also that was the apex of the steroid era, where pretty much every team had multiple 40 HR hitters.

Just picking a ball does not make you a proven defender, he has no range, he's a statue. What does "proven defender" even mean, talk about arbitrary statements.

It means he doesn't cost us runs.

For first baseman... no actually they're both probably in that average range. You're just being a drama queen.

You can cost runs both at the plate or in the field. There's no difference between a run saved and a run created.

There are just a handful of defenders that are better then Smoak in the league. Teix, Loney, maybe Hosmer? Point being his defense alone is worth putting in there for Bello, let alone there very similar hitters.

Dante Bichette 1999... 34 dingers, .379 wOBA, 133 RBI, -2.1 WAR.

.379 wOBA = 100 wRC+

Well yes I'm not that stupid. We were talking about defense and what the term proven defender means. When a player has over 5000 innings and a + UZR he's not costing us runs with his glove, that is all I meant by it. sheesh.

Coors is like -3 Beers Above Replacement.

and that spells out BAR. Which is where you get beer. Coincidence? More like illuminati.

You don't actually believe the likes of Trumbo is a better first basemen then Smoak do you?

Smoak is very head ups on the defensive side of the ball. There was a play the other day that was a bang bang decision on a bunt and he made a very nice judgement call to let it go foul. These plays won't get measured.

Well now you're seeing Colabello's 500 innings as relevant but ignored Smoak's 7.2/150 for this year @ 500 innings. Again, Smoak has had 1 bad year that has directly influenced his UZR, 5 of 6 have been positive. Call me when Colabello catches a fly ball, looking up is a thing.

Yeah just a weird confluence of circumstances. Second most offensive ballpark of all time (after Mile High Stadium) and most offensive era of all times. The scenario is basically impossible to recreate in today's baseball. Going to be a statistical outlier for a long, long time.

I can't conjure up innings that Colabello hasn't played. You can also say Colabello has had "one bad year" - this one.

Well this one kind of matters.

Ok your right, Smoak sucks defensively I'll move on.

Posted
I certainly suspect he would if he started in LF which is the main reason you pile the hate on for Bello

Nah i just think Smoak is the better overall player and should be in there almost everyday.

Posted
The WOP can hit, sample is large enough. Smoak has looooong swing, but does have power. Colobello's bat is far superior, especially since he uses the whole field. When doing so, even his outs have way more weight of being productive vs Smoak's.
Posted
You can't just expect luck to continue though. If his production fell off during a playoff run it'd be disastrous.

If his luck runs out, he'll provide the same value as Justin Smoak

Posted
He sucks

His results this year have not sucked. They've been quite good. Will be eventually go downhill and taste the sour lady of mediocrity?

Entirely possible.

But for 2015, up until now, the numbers have been good.
