jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 By Tulos reaction he's not too happy coming to Toronto but really what player would be? How so? I'm sure he's more shocked than anything since he's been in Colorado for his entire career and this has been the first time he's been traded. Secondly, he probably never expected to be dealt to Toronto out of all places. I'm sure Tulo will fit in well here and love the city. Toronto is one of the nicest cities in North America. Like AA mentioned, JD was the same when he heard he was traded.
jays76 Verified Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 This trade improves the team for sure but goddamn get some pitching help already. I pray this move doesn't disrupt team chemistry, for all the Reyes venom he was a sparkplug for the team. They seemed kind of somber tonight on the bench without him. I'm sure it hit Joey Bats & EE pretty hard..

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I thought it was interesting to hear that AA tried to do this deal last off season. It was only done once AA added Hoffman to the deal. So Reyes got so bad that AA thought it was better for the team to give up Hoffman to get rid of Reyes.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 This is nuts. Another AA special. Since last off season, AA has added Donaldson, Martin and Tulo yet the team is 1 game under .500..go figure although Tulo hasn't played a game. I wish Reyes well.

AA has added everything except for pitching. Might be too late to do that this year.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I remember many posters saying how bad the team looked 2 years down the road. Well, now they have added Donaldson, Martin and Tulo.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 wft? They didn't just get rid of Reyes, they got Tulo in return, but I'm falling asleep so who knows wtf.

It's amazing that they could get rid of Reyes... Yes they got Tulo, but AA felt he had to do it and gave up Hoffman to finally get it done. I never said we didn't get something back.
North of 60 Verified Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 This is a trade that has a small impact on the short and long term, but it's not enough to hint they are going for it this year. It's a trade that basically gives AA more job security, as he's not going to get fired after bringing in one of the highest profile players in the game. This trade buys AA more time. Do I think it's a good trade? Of course I do. It does carry some risk, but the reward is worth it. We also gave up a bit, but you can't get anything for free these days, especially a player of Tulowitzki's calibre.

If Rogers gets a good CEO I'd guess whoever it is would bring in a baseball guy for the GM job.

This is a trade that makes no sense, I don't know how this buys him more time.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 This is a trade that makes no sense, I don't know how this buys him more time. this trade makes lots of sense. AA wanted to move Reyes but needed to replace him with a top line player. This deal accomplishes both. Whether it's a good deal or not will take a couple years to find out.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Why would anyone want the best shortstop in baseball. Yes... We all know pitching is needed... But you can't put everything else on hold and put your fingers in your ears if an opportunity presents itself that isn't for a pitcher. This might not come around again. Tulo has a war of 1.2 this year and Reyes has the exact same. Tulo played 91 games last year, 126 the year before and 47 before that, at least we were finished with Reyes in 2017. Let's take a look at the blockbuster trades we've made and what it cost us, we are currently left with Buerhle, Thole, Dickey, Donaldson and Tulo and in order to get those guys we gave up: Synder Henderson Alvarez Descalfini Nicolino Kendal Graveman Nolin Hoffman Castro Tinoco Hech Marisnik D’Arnaud Beccarra Reyes Lawrie Barreto
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Currently ranked 11th best (tied with Reyes). Yes, because we can expect that to continue based on everything we know. Just discovered baseball or..?
strochez Verified Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I do like the fact we are giving pitching to Colorado as it will make it a lot harder for Hoffman, Castro and Tinoco to have sustained success. Not being ill-willed towards them but it'd be nice not having people groaning about Hoffman the way they do about Syndergaard, DeSclafani etc.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 maybe not... If Rogers gets a good CEO I'd guess whoever it is would bring in a baseball guy for the GM job. that's what's normally done, yes, so isn't it a little odd that (with AA's days supposedly numbered) Rogers gave Alex the green light to make the big (backloaded) free agent signing last winter and now added Tulo's big contract?
nonamejays Verified Member Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I think AA is here to stay. He's managed to get the best 3B, SS and one of the top 5 catchers in all of baseball without giving up much of anything. Yes the pitching has sucked, but the prices are too high for that otherwise he would have went out and done it a long time ago.

Syndergaard hurts the most. End of this year we will have gotten 1200 IP out of those starters and an absolute stud in JD. Tulo it remains to be seen. The issue is health.

Since last off season, AA has added Donaldson, Martin and Tulo yet the team is 1 game under .500..go figure although Tulo hasn't played a game. I wish Reyes well. This was an AA special, but closer to the Miami/Dickey kind than the Donaldson/Martin kind. My initial excitement to see Reyes gone and Tulo brought in turned around 180 the moment the prospects names were mentioned (Hoffman, mostly). I would have rather traded Reyes and eat up a portion of his salary than trade Hoffman to get Tulo. Strike out rates be damned, he was still an unfinished product, and I was looking forward to seeing a new regime (minus AA/Gibby/Walker) get their hands on him and see what they could do with his raw talent. Now we'll see that....but only in Colorado. Plus, Rogers letting AA absorb a $100m contract likely means he is staying, which would be horrendous after the year we are having (plus it means Gibby stays). I'm happy to see Tulo in a Jays uni, but horrible trade. Jays should have stood pat or sold, not added by subtracting from the farm. The "trade for expensive 30-somethings on free agent contracts" thing didn't work three years ago. Why go to that well again?

Yes the pitching has sucked, but the prices are too high for that otherwise he would have went out and done it a long time ago. He's done a good job especially with the budget constraints but he should've patched up the bullpen more coming into this season. Stroman was a fluke injury so he gets a pass on the rotation but he saved upwards of 10M for the deadline (which might not even be used now). That could've been spent on relief pitching and Navarro should've gone to Arizona (Stewart confirmed he wanted him), even if he was given away for nothing to create more budget flexibility. Coming into the season with the ragtag pen full of rookies cost us some important games. I don't know the exact count from the pen this year but it's more than a handful and it would've kept us in line with the Yankees. If there's one fatal flaw this year it's that, that was completely on him.
