TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 (edited) The one thing that needed to happen after all these moves was to fire Gibby. When your run differential is +100 and you are .500 its because you are always losing the close games. In a small sample size you could attribute that to luck, but in a large sample size that can be indicative of the manager. Constantly making poor decisions in close games. Gibbons teams going back to his first go around with the Jays have consistently under-performed in this area. Lets look at expected win/loss based on run differential each year starting in his first full year 2005: (Taking over for Tosca he went 20-30 in 2004 but I don't know what his pythag would be for those games...probably better!) 2015: expected win/loss 62-43, actual 53-52 2014: expected win/loss 85-77, actual 83-79 2013: expected win/loss 77-85, actual 74-88 2008: expected win/loss 93-69, actual 86-76 2007: expected win/loss 86-76, actual 83-79 2006: expected win/loss 86-76, actual 87-75 2005: expected win/loss 88-74, actual 80-82 Total expected win/loss% .536 , actual .507 This is terrible in a large sample size. How else to explain this other than he sucks? f*** him he needs to go, if they don't win this year, he's getting canned for sure. If they do make it he's this year's Ned Yost - he'll get a bunch of props for sucking ass. Edited August 2, 2015 by TilsonBritoFan

CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 If Gibbons is gonna stack the top of the lineup by leading off with Tulo (with Revere batting ninth) then ya gotta give Gibby some props. How many other managers in the game (if any) would be smart enough to bat Tulo & Donaldson 1-2?

The issues I have with Gibby are bullpen management, calling for bunts sometimes, and who he chooses to put in the lineup on a given day. How he orders the lineup seems for the most part, fine.

Ned Yost makes some terrible decisions I agree, how they hell has he managed to win more of the close games that are required to end up on the + side? Are his teams really just that lucky to outperform their expected W/L with him at the helm? He must be doing some things right that I don't see.

Most managers would have had Pillar leading off all year and then immediately inserted Revere.
0ctobyte Verified Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Don't really have that much of a problem with Gibbons. His bullpen management can be a head scratcher at times but I don't think he loses us games as much as people say he does.

No manager is perfect, for the most part Gibbons doesn't seem to do anything extraordinarily stupid. He's better than the other crap the Jays have had... John Farrell, Cito, Carlos Tosca, all garbage managers.

Except he does daily, like batting colabello fifth, leaving RH relievers in who are struggling to face right handed hitters instead of bringing in lefties, etc...

Yeah but, relative to other managers around the league? From what I've seen he seems decent at least.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Except he does daily, like batting colabello fifth, leaving RH relievers in who are struggling to face right handed hitters instead of bringing in lefties, etc... up to this point in the season, hitting Cola 5th has been a mistake? ... it basically couldn't have worked out better so far (and that's where Lou Gehrig ... I mean Justin Smoak would be when he's in there)
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 I dislike his BP usage and have since last season and that's an area managers can have an impact on games. On the other hand, it could be a lot worse. Same could be say of AA.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Best overall talent since the WS days, and Gibbons will f*** it up. I think only once Gibbons is fired will people realize how much of a wasted opportunity this was. He wasted JPR's best years, and he'll do the same for AA. Just have to hope the next GM is not an internal hire, because lord knows after another 3-4 years of rebuilding, Gibbons will be hired again because he's a funny redneck who makes jokes. At this point, I might take a different stance though. When AA said he left the roster decisions to Gibbons, and decided Valencia's fate based on that, I knew I was directing my anger at the wrong man. Gibbons is a moron, but all he did was say yes when a bigger moron offered him a job he had no business doing. Gibbons has made good teams underachieve for years. That's what he does. If the GM not only keeps him around but also makes roster decisions based on his input, then the GM is at fault.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 ballplayers are creatures of habit ... they follow routines religiously ... like predictability and don't like surprises so now that Revere is the everyday LFer, Gibby will be rolling out the same batting order day in and day out (just with Smoak & Cola being interchangeable, Navarro spelling Martin occasionally, and Tulo getting some days off from the turf)

Now I have to root for them to win this year because lord knows how many years it will take them to be good again after this.

CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 brilliant decisions by Gibby to start Dickey on 3 days rest ... play the hunch with Cola today ... and think outside the box with Revere hitting 9th.

Doesn't make up for yesterday. The Dickey start was because AA wants Price against the Yankees 4 times...nothing to do with Gibby.

CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 kudos to the ejected Gibby for coming back out from the clubhouse on Sunday to join his team for the melee on the field.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Funnily enough Gibby seems to be a better manager since we got: An Ace Tulo Restocked pen

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Yeah, doesn't matter much but Gibbons seems to be pretty dumb on the whole.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Funnily enough Gibby seems to be a better manager since we got: An Ace Tulo Restocked pen Nah, he's still a moron. AA just dummy proofed the roster. Even Gibbons can't mess this s*** up.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I honestly don't think a manager makes a difference. You look at some of the idiot managers in the past that have had success (Dusty Baker, Cito, Ned Yost, JF). A manager might win/loose you 2 games either way i could be wrong but just my opinion
