jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I totally agree. I think we will see Smoak back or perhaps a trade to platoon with Colabello and the offseason will 100% revolve around pitching. Personally, I do think spending on Davis makes some sense depending on what his price would be. At this point, it's anybody's guess where Chris Davis goes.. I can't see the O's shelling out for him.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Davis does actually make some sense. He helps in 2016 and then in 2017 when we are faced with having to resign Bautista and/or Edwin Encarnacion we could let one walk more easily. Chris Davis literally strikes out twice as much as Bautista and EE. Is that a concern?? How have the other 200 strikeout guys aged??
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Really don't want Davis. Past PED user and strikes out a s*** ton.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I could see AA going very hard after Freddie Freeman. He's young, signed cheaply through his age 26-31 seasons, and a great LH bat for our lineup. He would replace the production lost when Bautista/Edwin walk. We probably don't have enough pieces to nab him though
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I find it doubtful as well, but imagine EE, Bautista, Donaldson, Davis in the middle of the lineup. THat would probably be the most feared middle of the lineup ever. Potential 150HR between the four. Forgot about Tulo, good for another 25ish

We probably don't have enough pieces to nab him though The Braves will be in compete mode in a few years with the new stadium, and Freeman will be a part of that. They would only part with him if they got back pieces that would help in the near future, like Stroman/Sanchez/Osuna.

I'd trade Sanchez/Osuna in a package for Freeman in a heartbeat.
taximan89 Verified Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Not too familiar with Morneau's status in Colorado, but if his option year doesn't go through and he elects free agency, what interest would the Jays have do you think? LH bat with good OBP to fit in at 1st (and of course he's Canadian...).

Odds of that happening are pretty good if you sign Morneau.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Wouldn't it make more sense to use a LH outfielder to platoon with Cola rather than another 1B? If you put Revere (or Saunders if he comes back from the dead) in LF agains righties and push Pompey to RF, you can then slide Bautista to 1B or DH (with EE in the other position). I thought people wanted to transition Bautista away from the OF and yet I see lot of suggestions that involve bringing in more 1B/DH types and sheding OF depth.
Slugger Verified Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I just can't see it happening. They will probably just look for a Smoak upgrade for 2016 - someone to platoon with Colabello. And if AA stays around he'll probably be focused on extending EE and JB, so 1B will be kept open in the long term for Bautista. It will be a tunnel vision offseason focused on acquiring pitching, I think. No need for more offense and the pitching market is very deep. I'm not so sure Colabello needs a platoon.

Yeah I suggested doing that with Saunders even. But then it's not Bautista transitioning in to 1B is it? If he plays there against righties and a left handed bat plays OF, Bautista is going to be starting 75% of the games at 1B. And that's fine, I just don't think we see Bautista play 1B as much as we hope next season.
Slugger Verified Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I just don't think we see Bautista play 1B as much as we hope next season. He absolutely won't play there much at all, not with Colabello and Encarnacion. You won't see Bautista play 1B unless he extends here and it'll either be him or Encarnacion. You won't see both of them on the roster after 2016.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I'm not so sure Colabello needs a platoon. He was a pretty amazing find this year but he had a .411 BABIP and wOBA of .380. We cant bank on a repeat of close to that so he probably settles in against LHP.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I'd trade Sanchez/Osuna in a package for Freeman in a heartbeat. I can't wait until Freeman suits up for our National team.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I'm not so sure Colabello needs a platoon. It's very likely that he would need a platoon partner given what his regressed platoon splits would be in relation to his talent level. Even if you don't expect him to be terrible vs. RHP, you would expect a LHB of similar talent level to be much better. We could also remove the "platoon" label and just say that pencilling in Colabello at 1B would necessitate some legitimate insurance. A platoon is just a convenient and sensible way to get that insurance. Really they just need to roll out Smoakabello 2.0. Doesn't have to be Smoak though. Could be any not awesome or expensive LHB 1B type who would reasonably be acquirable. Morneaubello Jasobello Mossabello (would be awesome) Davisabello (Ike, obviously) LoMobello Smithabello etc.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Jaso would be pretty neat, has hit in a ton of bad parks and could be your emergency catcher.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Jaso would be pretty neat, has hit in a ton of bad parks and could be your emergency catcher. He can hit, no doubt about that. But he's played a grand total of 5 innings at 1B. At age 32 and given his skillset you'd think he'd have logged a lot more time there. It makes me think there is a reason why he hasn't played there more and it's because he can't really.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Jaso would be pretty neat, has hit in a ton of bad parks and could be your emergency catcher. Also, 5th OF. Only real issue is that he doesn't have 1B experience.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 He's played mostly catcher in his career, Tampa had Loney at 1b last year. That's my only explanation for it. I couldn't see him being terrible there even if he wasn't the greatest defensive catcher.

You have to expect some regression, especially with dat ColaBABIPello, but even then...he probably still comes out of it a productive hitter. I could be wrong, but I think he's earned the right to lose the job.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Justin Morneau would be pretty cool to have. We probably have enough depth once the inevitable injury incurs

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Forget Zobrist. Jays should have traded for Gomez and Fiers instead of Price. Cheaper and more years of control. Astros got a good deal. The Jays did try to get Fiers?

Governator Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Did anyone post that Jays are picking up Dickey's option? Was kind of obvious they would I think.
