dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 AA just on MLB radio. Giving credit to the analytics department for identifying Colabello. Said "they really wanted him" what kinda analytics do they use? lol

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I need your guys opinions on these targets and scouting reports on them for the off season FA's Ian Kennedy Mat Latos Mike Leake Kennedy is a nice pitcher, but I really don't think that his extreme flyball tendencies will play in the AL East. I like Latos a lot on a one year deal. His peripherals and velocity haven't changed much from his years as an ace pitcher. Leake has really fringe stuff; he's definitely an NL only pitcher. I'd be surprised if any AL team even targets him.

So we'll have a shot to keep Price and/or sign a starter or two.

They'll try to pass off a $170M (Cdn) payroll as significant.

jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 The more laughable post was the guy claiming the Jays would get destroyed by the Mets because they dont "match up well" but the Royals had a shot at beating them

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Don't count on it. Expect to hear the low Canadian dollar as a reason for it. They'll try to pass off a $170M (Cdn) payroll as significant. Rogers is likely hedged for any moves in the Canadian dollar, and the likely next move for our dollar is upwards, not down, especially when oil prices rebound and the US fails to raise interest rates because of a pending recession and looming QE4/NIRP(negative interest rate poolicy) Plus, luxury tax bills are priced in US dollars, so this isn't an issue. Besides, it wasn't an issue in 1992-93, when the Jays had the highest payroll and attendance in the majors.. it won't be an issue now if the Jays are winning and filling Rogers Centre.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 The Blue Jays tried to trade for Ben Zobrist, but the Athletics‘ asking price was Matt Boyd plus other pieces, Rosenthal hears, which was too steep for GM Alex Anthopoulos. Boyd was ultimately one of three pieces used to acquire David Price from the Tigers. From August on MLBTR. Just kind of interesting now, in light of how the games unfolded.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 25, 2015 Author Posted October 25, 2015 From August on MLBTR. Just kind of interesting now, in light of how the games unfolded. so funny cause almost all of us in trying to come up with deals for Zorilla (who I thought was the best off season target), we all included Boyd...just knowing that he's a Billy Beane type.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 From August on MLBTR. Just kind of interesting now, in light of how the games unfolded. Wow that kind of sucks. I really don't think Boyd would have been the deal breaker for Detroit.

Not sure if this team makes the playoffs without Price's starts honestly. It would have been nice to have BZ not to face him, but not as confident that we'd make the playoffs w/ him instead of Price. I am sure Detroit knew about Norris' cancer news and why they were able to get him and Boyd on top for a rental. Sure that bummed down his value a LOT to teams.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I asked Dave Cameron in his chat the first question and then he had a couple of follow up exchanges after that: Comment From Matt Will the Jays be serious contenders to sign Price like Anthopoulos says? What else could you see them doing? Dave Cameron I doubt it. My guess is they re-sign Estrada, trade for more SP depth instead of going for an ace, and if they spend, look for an LH bat this winter, probably at 1B. Comment From Neal Chris Davis would be a great fit for the Jays, no? His stats there are incredible and he's a LH power bat 1B. Dave Cameron Yeah, I could see them making a run at Davis. Comment From Neal Which would be better for the Jays in the long run? Making a run for Davis or Price? Davis would obviously be the cheaper option. Dave Cameron Depends on the cost. Price is probably going to get about twice as much as Davis, and I'm not sure he's twice as good, but there's a lot of risk with Davis as well.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Davis does actually make some sense. He helps in 2016 and then in 2017 when we are faced with having to resign Bautista and/or Edwin Encarnacion we could let one walk more easily.

They will probably just look for a Smoak upgrade for 2016 - someone to platoon with Colabello. And if AA stays around he'll probably be focused on extending EE and JB, so 1B will be kept open in the long term for Bautista. It will be a tunnel vision offseason focused on acquiring pitching, I think. No need for more offense and the pitching market is very deep.

I find it doubtful as well, but imagine EE, Bautista, Donaldson, Davis in the middle of the lineup. THat would probably be the most feared middle of the lineup ever. Potential 150HR between the four.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Forget Zobrist. Jays should have traded for Gomez and Fiers instead of Price. Cheaper and more years of control. Astros got a good deal.

I think we will see Smoak back or perhaps a trade to platoon with Colabello and the offseason will 100% revolve around pitching. Personally, I do think spending on Davis makes some sense depending on what his price would be.

Astros got a good deal. Gomez is injury-prone and missed a good chunk of September with the Astros, and Fiers had a 4.03 FIP/4.04xFIP/3.84 SIERA. He's a regression candidate. And his 89 mph fastball would get clubbed out of Rogers Centre (he gave up 24 bombs between Milwaukee and Houston.) Jays made the right move..
