No way he finishes that contract with the Rays. The team has serious long-term issues, not just because of the stadium, but the roster itself, as Longoria is in serious decline already:

He'll be dealt in coming years for young bats.. especially considering the Rays have very few bats in the farm. Odorizzi is in the same boat.

Man, we get your never ending thesis that the Rays are soon to suffer the Expos fate etc. The Archer contract is a f***ing steal. If anything is affordable that is....unless he pulls a Romero which I highly doubt.

Meanwhile back at the ranch we sit packed up with them in a pennant race with the Yankees continuing to put up W's

Yes, the Archer deal is a steal.. but it will make no difference if they don't get some offense. And the Rays system isn't ready to provide options for at least 2 years, if not more.

Dont worry

they will find the next decades archer, and Odorizzi and such.

With the Rays the pitching setup will continue to produce young top of the line pitchers.

Not with their current farm system. Unless you think Blake Snell is going to be a future option.. which he isn't with his control issues. Otherwise, there's nothing above A ball that is MLB ready.. and Enny Romero has busted. And many of their other options are minors filler at best.

It's a steal now but around the time he signed it he showed good signs but hardly pitched more than 5 innings per game. At the time i thought it was a very risky move on their part.

Bats such as Lind and Edwin who can play 1st poorly or DH have seen their market soften.

Deals for N Cruz and Melky coming off PEDS and other discounts with guys coming off injury have been available. There are ways to add to offense from outside that don't cost large long term money. Takes creativity and a bit of luck. Its harder and more costly to add pitching.

What was different in those rules?

Runner on 1st and 2nd in extras. It's also the same rules used in the World Baseball Classic.

Regardless, congrats to our Canadian team!

That has to be the most retarded rule ever....

Ahh, now i understand why they had so many runners in the extra innings. Every time i looked the bases were loaded.

How do they decide who is on first and second? The last two batters in the previous inning?

I think they can put anyone they want on first and second to start the inning off, and they can even begin the batting order from any spot in the lineup. Whoever scores the most runs in that inning wins.

The fact that they can put literally whoever they want in the batter's box in that situation, and Ernie Whitt lead the inning off with a guy who got three straight strikes on botched bunt attempts tells you all you need to know about the legitimacy of this match.

Oh well, a gold is a gold is a gold.

here's an explanation of the rules and how it played out in the gold medal game

"in extras, each team gets to start its half inning at the plate with runners on first and second. The manager can begin at any point in his batting order, but the order must be followed from there. So, for example, if he decides to put his leadoff and No. 2 hitters on base, then the No. 3 man comes to the plate.

Here's how it played out in the gold-medal game:

The Americans started off the 10th with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third, and Canada responded by loading the bases to set up a potential double play.

Tyler Pastornicky ruined those plans by smacking a double to left, scoring two runs and putting the U.S. up 6-4 before Canada retired the side.

Things got off to a rough start for Canada in the bottom of the 10th as Sean Jamison tried to bunt with two strikes, resulting in a strikeout when he rolled the attempt foul.

After Pete Orr hit an RBI single to centre to cut the Americans' lead to one, the real craziness began.

Despite the presence of a runner on second, blocking Orr from going anywhere, American pitcher David Huff tried to pick him off at first. The throw got away, allowing both Canadian runners to score and win the game."

International play is always in tournament form. You have a schedule to follow...you don't want a 17 inning game. This usually ensures scoring in the extras. OBA or all younger ball who have pitch counts should go to these rules too. There was a semi final game two years ago that went 14 innings. Both teams had 4 pitchers already burned from previous games and the winning team ended up killed in the finals as they were on to their number 8 pitcher.

Wow something that's actually dumber than a shootout in hockey.

Runners on base in extras has been common practice in baseball tournaments for years. Pretty much all competitive Softball leagues puts a runner on 2nd base in extras in tournaments. It's still better than soccer who might as well flip a coin. When the announcers say "He guessed right this time and made the miraculous winning save", you have a real s***** ending to a game.

It's very entertaining to watch a soccer shootout, not so pleasant on the players though.

Heck no. Taijuan's a part of the M's future. That would get Jack Z fired quickly if they made that deal.. and Jack Z's already on firing watch.

Are you a retired pro ball player by chance, who could pass a grade 5 level English class? If so you have a shot, though I think there is a waiting list.
