baubau Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 He doesn't even need to be an everyday player long term though. He has a fantastic 4th OF profile- cover all three positions, above average baserunner, can swipe a bag. Good teams have guys like him to step in to cover injuries, utilize off the bench, etc. I don't think anyone is proactively advocating trading Pillar. It is just under the assumption that if a GM out there falls for him and overpays then you make the move. I.e. Pillar for Miller + DJ Peterson from M's *hypothetical!*. This is also likely because the sentiment of Pillar being a 4 OF has still carried from the offseason/previous years. While he is trending in the right direction to be more than that, it is still a small sample size. 355 PA this year where at least 100 of that was utter crap at the plate. 4th OF while great aren't something you should hold out on from improving the roster if possible. Also the above statement can also applies for everyone on this team. Not just Pillar.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 If he could just develop strike zone recognition he could be good enough offensively to be an everyday player. It doesn't even have to be a big boost. OBP just isn't high enough yet. league average obp in the AL is .315 and PIllar's league average is .318 and he has shown a lot of improvement throughout the season getting to that point. His Defense and base running is well above average. He's an everyday player in my books. I'm surprised how many people still see him as a stop gap. He's 26 and isn't a free agent until 2021. He's got a lot of trade value if you want to get rid of him. I'd be open to trading Pompey because of what Pillar's done this year, and I'd be happy keeping both. I didn't think much of Pillar coming into the season, but he's been one of the best surprises of the season. He's developed into a nice asset.

I doubt there are many GM's itching to overpay for Pillar though.

You mean if you acquire MVP candidates / all-stars you should be given a bit of a leash? shocking.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 It won't, but if I could replace one of Norris or Hoffman with a Pillar in a trade, I'd do it. Not sure if I would. Pillar looks like he could be a sustainable 3 WAR player going forward as long as he has speed. What are the odds Hoffman/Norris will be able to say the same? He doesn't really need to be a good hitter to be valuable.

His entire off-season was great. It seemed like he was listening to somebody in the organization that he never listened to before because he was valuing WAR, framing, defense, etc, in all of his moves, which went against practically everything he did previously. Then Stro got hurt and the derp started coming back, and it hasn't left. He bought one more season with those moves. That season is now half way over. Two and a half months left in his tenure.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Big is a understatement they will need to Win 6 out of every 10 games going forward just to have a shot or .635 to hit 90 wins. Got a Hemi ... Bluejays? Well do Ya! Gonna need one to pull this one off and cross that line, first! VRoom f***ing VRoom !!!

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 why is buehrle not starting tonight?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 why is buehrle not starting tonight? Looks like Hutchison, Dickey, and Estrada against the Rays, based on Yahoo's schedule. Which means Gibbons just continued the same rotation order despite the four days off in between. That would be stupid as hell. Get Buehrle as many starts as possible.

I like gibby, and I try and give him the benefit of the doubt, but give me a break. Buehrle has given up 10 earned runs in his last 8 starts.

Buehrle has given up 10 earned runs in his last 8 starts. Plus he is giving Dickey a start against a division rival and a team they are trying to overtake. Starting your worst starter against a team you want to catch is always a good thing. I guess Copeland wasn't available, otherwise he could have started the third game in that series.

I think there was some speculation just to give Burly more time to heal his leg/foot from the pitch he took off it last game. Hutch and Dickey have extreme home splits so them starting makes sense, Estrada is the odd one. They may just be hoping for another no-no to the 8th. *shurgs*

I find it funny when fans rip the organization without knowing all (or even any) of the facts.

Hutchison starting in this series is fine, and so is Estrada (he's been the team's 3rd best starter). It's not using Buehrle in a series against a team you are trying to catch that is the issue. Start him Sunday for all I care, that's two extra days off. But use him against the Rays, if at all possible.

Makes sense to me, though apparently park effects on flyball pitchers is negligible... I don't completely buy it... i.e. Dickey comes to Toronto and he sucks.

No team in the AL East is projected (in fact no one in the AL period) is projected to get 90 wins. At this point, nobody know who'll win the East. Even the Yankees aren't guaranteed, depending on Tex and A-Rod avoiding injury or regression.
LTR Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 FG projected standings are pretty funny right now: Yankees 87-75 Blue Jays 81-81 Red Sox 81-81 Orioles 81-81 Rays 81-81

Anybodys division still and Jays if they can add some arm depth. To state the obvious Jays have to start converting more of these close game opps into W column.
