HS pitcher. Really punting those picks boys!

That doesn't mean it isn't a "punt" for slot dollars. If it's going to take nothing to sign him, then that's what we've been talking about, or at least I have been. I don't think they'll necessarily waste picks on useless seniors, but I do think they'll go after way-underslot guys that might be decent players, but will save them a lot of slot, in case they need it later.

Espada will sign for at least $100,000. I don't think you're getting "big discount" out of this pick. He's one of the top prospects from Puerto Rico, he's not signing for a bag of chips.

"Of the half-dozen pitching prospects headed into this draft class, Solá singled out right-hander Alexis Díaz, brother of pitcher Edwin Diaz, who was drafted 98th overall in 2012 by the Seattle Mariners. The younger Díaz, of Caguas Military and Sports Academy, is in a group that includes José Espada, Jovani Moran, Michael Rivera, Edrick Agosto, Jesús Ortiz and Reynaldo Rivera."

You guys act like we do that every year when we've literally only done it once, and it was a special scenario (an absurd amount of high picks).

Also, you're wrong about them doing it only once. They've done the punt strategy every year since the inception of the hard-slot draft, they've just made changes to grow their strategy each time. In 2012, they picked seven straight guys who they signed for $5000 or less, in 2013 they took Graveman, Girodo and Custons for $5000 or less, and in 2014 they picked Zehner (who screwed them and didn't sign), Romano (25K) and Metzler (10K).

They've made a concerted effort to save significant slot dollars in the mid to late part of the first ten rounds each year.

That's pretty much it. The strategy has evolved. They probably realized that the best value is in saving money without WASTING a pick. Just have to do a better job scouting and finding hidden gems.

Zehner was not a punt pick. He just didn't sign. He was a Junior who appeared on Top 500 lists. He appears on Top 500 lists this year as well.

I meant a full out "punt party". I know we took savings picks in the 9th and 10th rounds last year. Your initial post talked about us punting at Round 5, which is specifically what I was referring to. The only time we did that was the big 2012 draft. I never said we wouldn't take a pick or two under-slot in the ~8th-10th round range.

King, how much do you think Wise and Espada sign for? Or what per cent of their slot?

I have no idea lol. Probably fair to assume they will sign for below slot deals, but not a complete punt (ex. $1000).

Yeah, when I said punting, I only meant that they might take off-board guys that people aren't familiar with, that might save them significant portions of their slots. I don't expect them to go after useless guys or pick up a guy out of the air force academy for $5000, but I do expect them to chase guys like Boyd, Graveman and Greene.

A punt pick is by definition a guy who will sign for next to nothing.

What you are describing is just an underslot selection. Yeah, we'll probably take some cheap College picks to round out today like we did last year. "Punting" would refer to 2012 where we drafted seven straight guys who signed for $5,000 or less.

Graveman was a nice get, especially since he helped net us Donaldson. He signed for only 5k (0.03% of his slot value of 150+k)

Boyd looks like he'll be useful too and he only signed for 75k (30% of his slot value of 250k)

More of those guys please. :)

I am surprised the Jays haven't taken Pompey Jr.

I still think he'll go to either the Brewers or Jays. Could go any slot in the draft at this point.

Tristan Pompey has a Kentucky commitment. He's not likely to sign for peanuts I'd assume.
