Bert Blyleven was actually really good and deserved to be put in a lot sooner though. Not really a good comp at all.

Admittedly I didn't stare at Blyleven's fangraphs page before posting that, my mistake, I went based on the fact that he never won a Cy Young, and was actually only close a few times from what I remember. He was a lot better than Buehrle of course, and Buehrle will not get in the hall of fame but I do understand twistedlogic's way of looking at it.

sorry for subjecting you to Bryant Gumbel, but I figured no one would read the actual transcripts. This is the sole reason Raines is not in.

My favourite part from these trials that gets ignored is that Willie Mays was selling amphetamines...yet everyone freaks out when I say he was a steroid user.

Thanks, I forgot he was big into cocaine. Still of course a ridiculous reason for keeping him out.

You have to remember that Bert Blyleven got inducted. He pitched a crazy amount of innings (different era) but might be a decent comparison to Buehrle. Doubtful he gets in but I wouldn't say there's "no chance in hell".

Blyleven is probably a top 10 pitcher of all time.

They're not even comparable in terms of innings thrown; Blyleven has nearly 1.6 times as many as Buehrle.

Mark Buehrle has had a great career and was a good pitcher for a long time. He is not a Hall of Famer and that's okay.

I was going off the top of my head, it was a bad comparison but I meant that he was a guy who pitched tons and tons of innings but was never really regarded as the best pitcher in the game.

Give the hall credit for looking past Bert's win loss numbers - the year he won 20 he lost 17.

I wonder what his record would have been like if he had pitched for Detroit or some of the other better dynasty teams what his numbers would have looked like. He'd have been a perennial 20 game winner with a half dozen Cy Youngs and first ballot 100% of the vote HOF pitcher.

So agree. The Rock liked the Rock but he was an elite player for a very long time. I remember the excitement watching him come up with Expos. Was awesome.

I remember reading that he had the longest fingers ever recorded by a pitcher, which allowed him to be more effective of course. And he pitched for some pretty awful teams and still had success. Yeah, I'd take him over MB for sure. MB, solid but not spectacular.

Was he a legit 4-tool guy? I remember his glove and arm being above average. Quick as hell on the bases and fantastic contact hitter with great average. I think he had some pop for a few years, too. Maybe those were his cocaine years. I'll take a look at his stats on Fangraphs. It's always kind of cool to check out WAR, etc., on players I used to love, and before WAR became a thing.

I hate it, but his numbers aren't HOF worthy. I hope he pitches another 5+ years at a high level and makes it more of a debate.
