GNick49 Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Hendriks today: 81.00 ERA -2.93 FIP -2.93 xFIP They need to get him out of there. He opened the door for the Orioles to get back in.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Hendriks today: 81.00 ERA -2.93 FIP -2.93 xFIP I really think evaluating a pitcher based on xFIP in 0.1 IP is completely pointless. Just my opinion.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Rays/Red Sox tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th. Stream link: http://vipbox.biz/baseball/watch-1i5m5-boston-red-sox-tampa-bay-rays Hoping the game goes 38 innings and both rosters lose all 25 players to fatigue.
Statman Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I really think evaluating a pitcher based on xFIP in 0.1 IP is completely pointless. Just my opinion. Yes, in that context you are correct.
Statman Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 f*** THE ORIOLES and f*** WILLIAM SHOWALTER
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 But still more useful than ERA in 0.1 IP! Both are irrelevant. IMO the only way to evaluate a pitcher in a small sample, is by watching closely. I had someone claim that Eovaldi was pitching "ok" through 4 innings a couple of weeks back because of his xFIP when it was clear he was pitching well at the time.

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 You guys are joking right? Week oppo grounder, another grounder, a soft line drive and a nice K. This is coming from the same people who thought Sanchez's start was decent last night....
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Watching tells you nothing as well. I wasn't evaluating anything, was just showing how huge the gap in a small sample can be. Maybe I should have said that. Ok, agree to disagree then. If some posters think xFIP is the only way to evaluate a pitcher's start then so be it, but I think that is wrong. Let's agree to disagree.

Give reedjohnsonfan some credit, Hendriks looked pretty good to me, it's not like the balls that were hit off him were hard....
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Well xFIP is actually vey flawed, but trying to make sense of things by watching is just back-pedalling. I don't think so. It's important to use stats and watch IMO, but if you don't think so, that's fine.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Give reedjohnsonfan some credit, Hendriks looked pretty good to me, it's not like the balls that were hit off him were hard.... I'm not talking about Hendriks, he looked fine. I just thought it was weird when someone posted Eovaldi was looking just "ok" a couple weeks back because of his xFIP...
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Well xFIP is actually vey flawed, but trying to make sense of things by watching is just back-pedalling. It just creates bias. It all depends on who is doing the evaluating.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Professional scouts will never beat reliable metrics. Meh.. Makes things robotic and boring. So basically the games don't even have to be watched to get a proper evaluation? Call me old school, but i just think there is more to evaluating a player than plain simple metrics.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Professional scouts will never beat reliable metrics. reliable metrics will never beat the organization that uses both reliable metrics and above average scouting.
