glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Yeah don't wish any bad health to a player but this helps the team. Let Thole catch Dickey and let Smoak play 1B.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 May seem odd but this benefits the team by forcing Gibby to play Smoak. Silver lining
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Well be interesting to see if Martin still catches Dickey today. Hutch is pitching tonight
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 blessing in disguise honestly
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 If someone was to go down with injury, navarro is the guy. Thole is the better catcher and smaok is the better option in the lineup.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 We could still see Bautista at DH and Edwin at 1B for a significant amount of games Saw just coming on to say this.... If Joses shoulder is still barking when he throws then Saunders Pompey Pillar outfield and EE at first and Jose DH..... Not ideal but it keeps Bau in the lineup not much choice.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Interesting lol: Too bad he has with every pitcher who's come in after Dickey.
keggy Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Travis stepped up when Izturis went down. Likewise Smoak has to make a big statement with this opportunity if he wants to be considered an everyday player.

baubau Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 That's IF he gets an opportunity. Bautista to DH seems quite possible. And dumb. This team should probably rest their injured players early (Reyes, Bautista) then risk them having a worse injury as a result down the road which could hurt a lot more. I'd be happy with Bau out 2-4 weeks in the first month than 2-3 months down the road. This Navarro situation is also hilarious. The Jays hold onto him thinking he will be valuable once someone else's catcher goes down and here he is himself hurt.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Too bad he has with every pitcher who's come in after Dickey. That is true. Martin is a worse catcher afterwards because of the Dickey effect.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Apparently Martin may catch Dickey on Friday with the lefty on the mound. Interesting
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Interesting I like it. Gives Martin an opportunity to build on what he's done so far.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 This team is stupid as hell if they make Martin catch Dickey with Thole on the roster.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 This team is stupid as hell if they make Martin catch Dickey with Thole on the roster. Why would you want Martin to lose practice at it? There's no upside to that.
Slot Machine Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Why would you want Martin to lose practice at it? There's no upside to that. This. God forbid this team actually makes the playoffs, we planning on benching Martin for Dickey's starts then. I'm all in favour of them sharing the role, give Martin the chance to continue working on it but not working him into the ground either.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Smoak,Thole, and Goins are all good (thole?) defensively but none of them can hit......smoak hit .200 last year and while players can and do, improve , it isn't likely. Say what you like about Navarro..he can hit.

Say what you like about Navarro..he can hit. wRC+ of 98 last year and 85 for his career. If you're going to compare him to Goins and Thole - than yeah, I guess you have a point. The only thing he hits is the late night buffet.
Praxis Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Martin is a superb framer and an excellent defensive catcher who seems to work very well with younger pitchers and veterans alike. 15 games is still a tiny sample size, but it seems clear that to this point when Martin catches Dickey it throws him off for the whole game and many Dickey pitches that should be called strikes are not due to the difficulty of catching the damn thing. How it seems to impact Martin afterwards has also been much commented on, but I have to think that to some extent it may also be throwing off his timing when it comes to hitting as well; I never expected Martin to hit up to last years numbers, but so far this year it has been a struggle for him and I think it may well be related to some extent to the Dickey effect as well. Martin is a true professional who seems to take great pride in his craft and would catch anybody if asked, but it simply makes sense to bring up Thole for Dickey at this point and remove Navarro from this team for good. We cannot keep asking the team to pay the price for AA refusing to accept that he can't get anything of substance for Navarro; just move him on already.
Jayday Verified Member Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Smoak is a better hitter than Navarro. You must be guessing, cause you're not going by past stats. Smoak can't catch, and he's never yet proven he's above average with his bat. Navarro can catch and he's doable as a hitter, and I am not interested in the park difference, seattle bigger park should get smoak more hits but less HRs, meh, he's unremarkable as a hitter, but good defense at 1st.Thole is the one needs to go, and dickey right behind him if that's possible.
