bronson44 Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Am I alone in thinking a pitching coach change might be in order before any other drastic moves? Sorry if this seems reactionary but I was never a fan of his hiring in the first place and I've seen nothing that made me think I was wrong since. Stroman was good before he got here. Hutch doesn't seem to have progressed much. Norris seems to have almost taken a step back command wise. I'm pretty sure he stays away from Burly and Dickey so they don't count. Who has he helped?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Was this really thread-worthy?

bronson44 Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 Was this really thread-worthy? Probably not. I just really wanted other people's input on how much of an impact they think a pitching coach can have and the board seemed dead at the moment.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 Alright, points taken. I'm hammered. Mods close this thread.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Not seems, it is reactionary.... Well technically most things that aren't done proactively are reactionary, so... That being said, not sure Pete's the issue.
baubau Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Didn't Pete help a few pitchers find new pitches last season and worked with Norris and Sanchez to develop pitches this season? I really don't follow the pitching/coaching aspect of MLB and their minor league teams to know whom has a good rep or not.

Not sure about last season, but I know he has been helping Sanchez with a slider, which he sucks at and never throws. Norris learned a change from him that looked great in one start but less so in the next. I realize these should probably not be Walker issues but I don't find him particularly insightful in interviews and any pitching coach praise I hear from players is usually directed to Dane Johnson.

Who has he helped? lmao, Stroman and Hutchison both made very positive adjustments in 2014 after reaching the major league level, Norris debuted two weeks ago, and of course the two guys you don't have anything to complain about "don't count". Please play again.

I don't know how to evaluate one but I never found him to be particularly insightful in interviews so my view of him is clouded by that. Don't be a ****.
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Its so hard to quantify how much of an impact hitting and pitching coaches have. Especially when you dont see or know what kind of work they are doing behind the scenes. Id venture to say they have little impact in the grand scheme of things.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 You might be on to something. How can you have a pitching coach that doesn't know how to throw a curveball?

I really don't follow the pitching/coaching aspect of MLB and their minor league teams to know whom has a good rep or not. I've pointed this out before and it's one thing that gives me some hope for Sanchez improving as the year goes by. Stroman developed a sinker and Hutchison either developed or improved his slider during the course of last season. Norris learned a new changeup in ST which already looks good. Sanchez is working on a slider, but hasn't used it much, if at all, in games so far. I'm actually surprised we haven't seen a "fire Jacoby" thread yet.

I meant in terms of reactionary threadz. I'm in no way saying I'd fire the hitting coach. I'm not for firing Pete Walker either. Hutchison was a bit unlucky and wild yesterday, but I liked the spike in K's we saw. Stay calm...
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 It was a terrible hire to begin with, to hire a pitching coach who has never been successful in pitching himself. Sigh Anyways, I am sure failure in 2015 means they will all go

You are not alone. He ran the worst bullpen in MLB before getting promoted to pitching coach. There is going to be some type of coaching change in early-mid May I believe if things continue the way they are. Either Walker or Gibbons IMO.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 What this team needs is Pat Hentgen back managing the pen. I don't know what he did but everyone exceeded expectations with him there.

Our pitching staff has been in decline since Walker took over as well.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 So a Fire Pete Walker thread before a Fire Gibby OR a fire AA thread? Well, it's novel, I'll give you that! (and since alcohol was involved in the thread creation, I will not hold it against you! Alcohol can do no wrong!)
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 How long till someone bumps the "Bautista is in decline" thread?
bendera3 Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 I think for the most part our starters have done a good job. It's the pen that has been a problem so far, which I think 90% of the board expected.
