Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 #DBacks GM Dave Stewart: “We’re not going to trade for a catcher. Some people think we are. We’re not.”
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 They were too busy trading Wade Miley for two relievers and overpaying for Hellickson to worry about trading for a catcher.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 "Some people (mostly those working in the front office) think we're a good team who is completely fine at the catcher position. We're not"
Brenner Verified Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 He just jinxed himself, he will definitely trade for a catcher sometime this year.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 To bad. One of the only options to send Navarro. Not according to Navarro lol
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Navarro for Lobstein, make it happen AA!
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 It seems like Dave Stewart might be dumn.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 probably all-in on Peter O'Brien
bendera3 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 How negative is the WARz for all the D'backs catcher position this year? Think they will be worse than JPA's #toptencatcher season?

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Even if your not looking at the moment you don't just shut the door completely on it if it improves your team.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Navarro for Lobstein, make it happen AA! I'm in.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Honestly I'd just keep Navarro He will get his atbats
Governator Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Honestly I'd just keep Navarro He will get his atbats That's like saying they should put Drabek in the rotation because he'll get his pitches in.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 That's like saying they should put Drabek in the rotation because he'll get his pitches in. There is so much uncertainty with respect to E5 and Smoak and where all that lines up. Navarro is a decent bat. For me there is nothing wrong with him backing up Martin getting a DH start or two a week (assuming healthy EE) and getting in at 1st occasionally With Smoak we may have a breakout but we also may have a complete dud. As a contingency plan Navarro slots in well. I can see him getting 40 starts at Catcher 30-40 at DH and another 20 at 1st

I can't come up with any scenario in which Navarro would be playing first base. Yes he might get 60 games in from spot catching and some DH roles against righties, but that's about it and if he starts DHing we're forced to keep Thole on the roster because Navarro wouldn't be able to backup Martin in any game. Well I mean he could if you don't mind the pitcher taking over DH spot the rest of the game.

They have Valencia, they likely will have one of Smoak or Barton and even Pillar should be a decent part time bat whenever Saunders is healthy.

The only value Navarro brings to this team is being a better backup catcher than Thole, which is like saying I'd rather eat a steaming pile of cow dung than eat a steaming pile of cow dung that's been out in the hot sun for 3 days.

I agree with most of what you say, but if they keep Navarro and Martin is catching Dickey, there is no need for Thole. That scenario of the DH/pitcher would only happen once or twice a year at most, you don't need to carry an extra catcher all year on the off chance Martin will be injured, thats what Buffalo is for.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 the comment may have more to do with the ready availability of catchers for cash.... kinda like relief pitchers or, maybe he is waiting for the O's to punt JPA
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 It was such a long time ago that I thiught I may have been misremembering, but Stewart was in fact in the running for Jays GM in 2001 before they hired Ricciardi. They picked JP because he was white. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/15/sports/on-baseball-stewart-passed-over-by-the-blue-jays.html
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 They picked JP because he was white. Just because Stewart interprets it that way doesn't mean you have to do the same. More likely they picked J.P. Ricciardi over Stewart because of the former's association with Billy Beane and the later's association with the GM they were replacing (Gord Ash).

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I love this quote from when Dave Stewart was arrrested with a tranny hooker. "Mr. Stewart said he was unaware that Tyler was a male until after the arrest," Police Cmdr. William Booth said. "That was his statement, and we have reason to believe him."
shortstop Verified Member Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I could understand if the D-Backs front office set very low expectations since, well, they sucked last year. But to come out & say this team is aiming for .500 or greater & then stating they're not looking to upgrade the catching spot doesn't make any sense. Unless of course, Gosewich performs & Stewart looks pretty smart. That's a decent back 3 in Perez, Ziegler & Perez and Stewart probably views the D-Backs better with those 3 than only 2 and Navarro. Or he'll look foolish but only b/c of his win now comments. If he stuck to no expectations, then stick with Gosewich and no one cares.

Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 #DBacks GM Dave Stewart: “We’re not going to trade for a catcher. Some people think we are. We’re not.” they will suck regardless, so trading prospects for a catcher would be stupid.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 It's kind of funny that everyone thought Stewart would want Navarro because he's stupid, and now everyone is calling him stupid because he's not going to trade for Navarro.
