reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Why are the highest leverage situations always considered to be the 9th inning? I just haven't understood that logic. Every week scenarios happen prior to the 9th where you wish your best BP arm could bail you out. I often see teams go to their closer in the 8th inning when there are at least 1 out in a very high leverage spot and then use them again in the 9th. Tigers & Rays did that against us I believe last year and I don't think I saw it once with Jannsen. Maybe it's just Gibbons lack of balls. Edit: I can definitely see Loup getting in a few jams in the 8th if he indeed becomes the primary set up man from his walk rate alone. That's a good point. The other side of the coin is that it's helpful for relievers to know when they're going to pitch, from a psychology standpoint. Some guys in the pen were happy when Farrell took over from Cito for this reason. It's helpful for players to know they're role and what inning they will possibly pitch in.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Lopez, West, Guilmet all good BP options
shortstop Verified Member Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Navarro for Oliver Perez? first thing I thought after reading Gibby said he might go with 3 LHP's if Cecil closes... he makes $2.5M & free agent after this year & ok ERA past 3 years

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Isn't that would Loup is for to get tough lefties out? I know he uses him against both but Loup's numbers are much better against lefties. It seems like Loup nibbles against righties and actually walks them at a high right. Just use Cecil as closer and Loup as loogy and hopefully guys like Delabar and Estrada can step into setup roles. We really do need another late inning reliever. Soriano would be a great fit. Yer dumn.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Matt West and Preston Guilmet to minor league camp. RHP Gregory Infante reassigned. SP 1-Dickey 2-Hutchison 3-Buehrle 4-Sanchez 5-Norris Bullpen CloZer - Cecil Setup - Loup Setup - Delabar LOOGY - Hynes/Francis LongR - Redmond LongR - Estrada LongR - Drabek/Lopez/Hendricks
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 ftfy That could be the ideally, but Delabar and Sanchez will make the team.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Cecil, Loup, Lopez, Delabar, Redmond, Estrada, Hynes/Francis (or another LHR) If AA is on stupid pills, then put Castro in place of one of the guys above, but I'm still thinking sanity prevails on that front.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 It will probably be less than a month before Drabek gets outrighted and West or Guilmet are in there. They can also carousel that spot with Hynes/West/Guilmet since they all have options. Barnes will have to get DFA'd. Still pretty gross staff. Since Stroman is hurt you've got a rookie and a swingman pencilled in and no Ace. Bullpen might be fine because it's a pen but it's still s*** at the wall. Meh. The Blue Jays will be an offense first team again.
tercet Verified Member Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Man that pen is bad, it's funny how everyone assumes delabar will bounce back too. Will the Jays try to hide Drabek or straight dfa him in early April?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I can't believe I'm saying this about Liam Hendriks, but the Jays can't afford to lose him given the lack of depth on this team. If they are confident he can pass through waivers, then do it, but otherwise, he's someone I can see a team in need of a pitcher claiming.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Hendriks actually projects very nicely. Steamer quite likes him as a reliever and ZiPS thinks he's a 1.3 WAR starter in 167 IP. I'm actually surprised he's not a rotation option for them, especially after Stroman's injury.

Drabek and Barnes also out of options.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 All our possible relief options with full time reliever Steamer Projections (FIP): Cecil 3.12 Hynes 3.51 Hendriks 3.53 Loup 3.70 Guilmet 3.72 Franics 3.78 West 3.87 Lopez 3.93 Barnes 4.00 Redmond 4.04 Delabar 4.09 Burke 4.09 Drabek 4.13 Tepera 4.19 REPLACEMENT Burns 4.29 Jenkins 4.29 Schultz 4.32 Infante 4.37 Bo Schultz is my one projection buster this year. He just 'looks' like he'd be a really good reliever. This is a guy that didn't even really play baseball until his junior year in College. He played beer league softball and studied journalism. Walked onto the baseball team and had a 9.00 ERA but enough velocity to sign undrafted with Oakland. They tried to Ziegler him and make him a sidearm reliever for a few years. Then Arizona picked him up four years later and eventually made him a starting pitcher, overhand. I don't think he's ever really been a full time, overhand throwing relief pitcher. Of course, you probably know all of this already. Great article on him: https://sports.vice.com/article/bo-schultzs-long-road-from-williamsburg-bar-softball-to-the-american-league-east

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 lol, well maybe that's actually wha Bo said (it's in a quote). It's entirely possible that he did say that, but I assume it was a spoken quote, so there's room for interpretation based on context. Plus, writers can use [sic] or simply put the correct word in square parenthesis to show that the abuse of the English language is the fault of the source.
