So Chris Young, Ted Lilly, Johan Santana and Carlos Zambrano had consistently low BABIP rates over their careers because they were good fielders?

NJH hit the nail on the head. My post was garbage. I could have been way more clear (that's never really been the way I write though, especially when I was writing a paper at the same time). Flyball pitchers (of which Chris Young is the most extreme example, Johan is middle of the pack) tend to have much lower BABIPs. Carlos Zambrano was a ground ball pitcher who's entire career was confusing. His ERA outperformed his FIP by 35 points in his career and beat his xFIP by 53 points. You've got me on that one, I know righties had a really low career BABIP against him. Probably was very specific to certain pitch.

When I made a reference to how the Howie's are like the Darrell's once were and wanted to make a comparison to how they worship every word JFAs says like the Darrell's did you. I was going to make further comparison but then I realized that as the guy that named the Howie's that would make me Jaysbooster (or was it Ken?) and that depressed me. Essentially the entire post was just so I could take a shot at both King and Boxy.

Pretty sure I never worshipped nox. If anything, it ran the other way.

I'll happily accept the sour keys in a top 3 but just can't get behind the sour grapes.

BTW I was interested in just how low Sanchez' 2014 babip was. Out of 27404 pitcher seasons in baseball history with a minimum of 30 innings pitched, Sanchez has the 4th lowest babip ever. Of course this number is misleading, as the sample includes all seasons that contain much higher innings counts but I don't know how to search an interval of IP, like 30-50 innings or something.

Still pretty funny though.

Sour keys def top 3, but Real top 3 has to include:

And of course, everything in the discussion here needs to be slightly stale, as if left open in a Chinese owned corner store for a few weeks.

Like I said before, that's a possible explanation and one of the simplest ones but I'm not going to make a sweeping assumption about this batch of guys any more than I did about the first batch of guys proposed in this thread. You have to look at each case individually. Others have mentioned type of contact as being a big factor as well (GB\FB). I believe there are formulas that will give you a pitcher's xBABIP against based on different ratios which in turn should give you a more precise idea of how sustainable a given pitcher's babip against is. I'm not sure those formulas would adjust for pitcher defense though so once again, you might have to factor a positive adjustment for the Mark Buehrle and Clayton Kershaw's of the world and maybe even a negative one for some especially garbage fielders.

These aren't sour, but help you alot.

It's a small sample but Sanchez does look like a plus fielder to me. He's looks to be a solid athlete and that short stride and easy arm action makes it so he doesn't fall off the mound as much as most pitchers.

No love for wine gums...=(

#1 in my books. Sat down for a poker game once and without thinking about it, finished a 2KG bag before the first break. The stomach issues that caused have never deterred me from many wine gum binges.

This turned into one of the greatest conversations ever.

Jesus Christ.

Strangely, that makes me want Wine Gums even more.
