tercet Verified Member Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 It's funny how everyone thinks that Aaron Sanchez should be stretched out as a starter due to 33 IP last year in the majors. Common sense dictates that Aaron Sanchez is a candidate to regress. To what extent I don't know, but when your walking 5bb/9 you wont succeed in the majors. 2010 - 2014 Minors 379.2 IP - 4.8 BB/9 2014 Majors 33 IP - 2.5 BB/9 July - 0 BB/9 August - 1.9 BB/ 9 September - 4.8 BB/9 OPS Against - 121 PA - .128/.202/.163 - .367 OPS (This is obviously sustainable)

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Sanchez as high walk totals and declining K rates. That's not a good combo. He's more valuable to us as a trade chip.

I agree, f*** giving the kid a chance. maybe we can package him with Dickey for Neil Walker and solve 2b temporarily

Whether or not he's a starter will depend on the control of his secondary pitches. He's got the stuff so I'm not concerned about his low strikeout stats.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Gio can miss bats, Sanchez can't (below average SwStr% as a reliever) 88% fastballs while he was a reliever.

SAAviour Verified Member Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Im not ready to write off a guy with 97 mph heat with movement. Jays already did that once with Henderson Alvarez. Before his successful 33 ip I wasn't ready to write the guy off, why the f*** would we write him off now? Because he did well in his first taste of the majors?

I'd be interested to explore this comparison more to see how well it holds up. I feel like beyond the velocity, there was a lot more data to support the idea of keeping Alvarez than there would be for the idea of keeping Sanchez right now but I'd have to dig some more to give you a real answer.

Hmm. I dunno. Alvarez had just pitched 187 innings as a starter in 2012 with 5.18 FIP and a 3.80 K/9. There were pretty good reasons to think that he kind of sucked.

Alvarez was the only part of that package I was bummed the Jays gave up, You can't teach a 98mph fastball.

There were pretty good reasons to think that he kind of sucked. That's fair but he was a 21 year old two pitch pitcher who probably didn't belong in the majors in the first place. That being said, Sanchez himself is still only 22. It's funny how Alvarez's rise seemed meteoric while it feels like Sanchez has been taking forever to develop. In reality, they both made the majors at 21, the only difference being that one pitched a significant amount of innings as a starter and the other pitched only a few as a reliever.

Gorlak Verified Member Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Ummmm.................. (Infante, Liz, Morrow, Ubaldo, EJax, Carmona-Hernandez, Penny) Is your argument that velocity doesn't help a pitcher? Saying it doesn't make them a sure bet to be aces doesn't change anything.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Is your argument that velocity doesn't help a pitcher? Saying it doesn't make them a sure bet to be aces doesn't change anything. Velocity 1A, but you need to put strikes to be a positive asset at MLB level.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Velocity 1A, but you need to put strikes to be a positive asset at MLB level. That's why his control of his secondary pitches will be the deciding factor. He can likely keep his walks down if he throws only fastballs, but he won't be able to go through the lineup multiple times. If his changeup is a quality pitch he can locate, he will be able to stick as a starter.
