HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 I guess the sabermetric argument by Donaldson's agents didn't sway the old-school stat preference by the arbitrator. Anyone here want to get a deal for Donaldson that buys out one FA year? Gives cost certainty.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 As an aside, really liking things like this from Sportsnet: Yeah mainstream sports stations shouldn't get left behind. Let's see if they start posting things when the traditional stats are good but advanced stats show them to be more of aberration though.
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted February 13, 2015 Author Posted February 13, 2015 1.45M. Should buy us a reliever, no? It should, but I think if we see someone sign in the next day or two, it sends a bad sign about payroll, in that the Jays HAD to wait to see the outcome of this before being able to commit another 1.5mil to a reliever.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 on the other side, you have to figure Donaldson is saying "what more do I have to do?". And the answer is obviously gain 50 pounds and be black.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 What's with AA going to arbitration with multiple players this year? He's literally never let it happen until this year. Is it because they weren't "his" guys? As in they are new acquisitions who haven't actually played for the Jays yet.

He's obviously one of the best position players in the league and I don't really think that he was asking for too much. However, it's nice to have the savings and hopefully we can use it either over the offseason or at the deadline to improve the 25 man roster.
flafson Verified Member Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 AA went smart with Donaldson, he went 200k below the estimate and Donaldson went almost 1.5mil above the estimate. Was a much easier case for the Jays than Donaldson.

Must've felt that their offers were strong enough!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Actually I forget who else he went to arb with and lost...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Valencia played for the Jays last season. I'd forgotten who the other one was. My bad.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Great news though. I didn't expect this to happen.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Excellent, now they have a starting point for a long term deal. Make that a thing, k?

TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Excellent, now they have a starting point for a long term deal. Make that a thing, k? Honestly the only real reason to do a long term deal with him is if they are concerned about the relationship in year to year negotiations. He's already 29...I don't like betting on someone's age 34 season when you have 29 to 33 already under control. If he's getting big big bucks during his next 3 arb cases...it's really good for the team.
shortstop Verified Member Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Lol goes to show wtf I know about the arbitration process - at $5 he's a steal & even more so at $4.3 Like his attitude though - business is done & move forward No way jsys sign him with so many years left - anything can happen Bw now & then
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 I feel like there's a reference I'm missing here. Sandoval? Only Super 2 to ever win big in arbitration.... Admittedly he wasn't really 50 lbs. more than Donaldson at the time...and had a 5 WAR season with his bat alone (although was still not the legit MVP) but he's still the only Super to ever get 8 digits and no one since has been close.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Lol goes to show wtf I know about the arbitration process - at $5 he's a steal & even more so at $4.3 Like his attitude though - business is done & move forward No way jsys sign him with so many years left - anything can happen Bw now & then Arbitration is based more off history than true value. Donaldson is going into his first arbitration and even worse for him he's getting it a year early (known as a Super two). The part that is crap for hitters going in to their Super two hearing is that they can't compare to pitchers. In Donaldson's case if he wanted big money he'd be compared to the two biggest Super two award winners (Ryan Howard $10M and Miggy Cabrera $7.4M) and would for sure lose as his traditional numbers pale in comparison. It would be nice if every hitter could just walk in and say "Papelbon got $6.2M" as their entire argument. Just a quick memory of the Super two's in recent history, I'd guess that the Jays compared Donaldson to Carlos Quentin who got $3.2M. It's such an unfair argument as the run environment has changed since 2009 but there haven't been many successful players reaching Super two recently.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 David Price has done quite well via arbitration. Do pitchers just do better in the process? Maybe Cy Young awards help? (kidding, I presume it's just his numbers)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Lol goes to show wtf I know about the arbitration process - at $5 he's a steal & even more so at $4.3 Like his attitude though - business is done & move forward No way jsys sign him with so many years left - anything can happen Bw now & then Exactly. AA will not even consider an extension until he's played at least a couple of years here and is closer to free agency. That's his philosophy. Even if it ultimately costs a bit more to lock guys up if they stay really good, you can avoid some bad contracts by not gambling too early.
shortstop Verified Member Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Interesting Hurl; that does put things into context.
shortstop Verified Member Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Yes G-Snarls, that's his philosophy & pretty good one imo - Otherwise we'd be paying Colby, what, $12-$15 now?

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Had to look it up to remind myself that Colby signed with the Astros for 8M
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Colby could be playing in Japan in a couple more years

I was an active reader, not poster during Colby's 2013 season. I remember wanting the Jays to lock him up long term. Sure glad AA didn't. One of his biggest strengths is certainly extending current players. I trust he will do the right thing with Donaldson, whatever that might be.
