And yet that team lost to the Marlins in the World Series.

Is it any wonder? I mean Stormtroopers couldn't hit the broadside of a barn never mind the strike zone!

The 2003 Marlins were really f***ing good (I followed the NL East very closely back then). They would be the type of team to always make a huge comeback in the 8th and 9th and their rotation was solid af.

Synd 2.70ERA. God is that depressing as a Jays fan. On pace for 5WAR over course of a full season. That would be more than Dickey put together in three seasons as a Jay.

Time to let go.

Yeah it would be nice if we didn't have half of our posters furiously masturbating to every one of Synd's starts. You guys are acting like a bunch of queers

If you guys are gonna bitch about Dickey/Syndergaard then I honestly hope you guys bitch about Hoffman and Tulo 3 years from now. Don't be an armchair GM.

Is the fact that 99% of the people who are bitching about Dickey/Syndergaard now bitched about it then lost on you?

A) Tulo best SS in the MLB.

B) Dickey was an 38 years old knuckleballer who won CY young

I'm pretty people were 50/50 on the trade. They weren't happy about giving up Syndergaard but they were happy getting back a Cy Young award winner. It was no where as lopsided as it is now, obviously, because people like to second guess and evaluate trades many years down the road.

I guess it depends on which people you're talking about. I remember most people who hang around in these parts were pretty dubious about the deal. Not only for losing Noah and TDA, but because it also enforced JPA as starting catcher.

Yes but even 50% is way more criticism than the Tulo trade is gathering right now. Regardless of the actual percentage, it's clearly not a valid comparison.

Nobody with a brain liked the Dickey deal.

I liked it (sort of). I mean I hated it on paper but I felt like the Jays had already given up a lot of future in the Marlins trade and really had no choice but to keep being aggresive. I also thought there was a chance that Dickey would pitch like a number one for a fraction of the cost and that the rareness of that opportunity justified and aggresive move. That being said, I felt like the Jays took their feet off the pedal too soon. Their win-now team was left unfinished. They needed to trade Sanchez that off season too and really empty the holster if they were going to go all in. They needed even more win-now talent and they needed a proper 2B (or at the very least to hold on to Aviles/Gomes). Their supposed all-in win-now team was left unfinished. It took two years before AA finally added to the core with the likes of Martin and Donaldson by which time some of the traded players have started to come back to haunt us.

My comparison is not based on the quality of the players but a comparison in that people like to make a statement on the day of the trade, and then when something goes wrong down the road, reverse that statement and say "I told you so"

The Dickey trade obviously was a disaster but at the time it was a reasonable deal. And I'd do that deal again because I don't second guess.

We could have an obvious no-brainer deal like the Donaldson trade and say at the time it was made that it was a good decision. But what if next year Donaldson crumbles under the turf, Graveman ends up winning 20 games and Barreto becomes the best shortstop prospect in baseball? I fully expect people here to say the Donaldson trade was terrible, AA dum, e.t.c.

The Dickey trade was a good move because we dealt from a position of strength - pitching prospects. It hurt to give up d'Arnaud but s*** happens. Dickey had great numbers in domed parks and great numbers against the AL East teams. And age was a non-factor as we all know that knuckleballers age well.

All the numbers going in looked good to justify the Dickey deal and we also gave up excess pitching. The only mistake was choosing to give up the wrong pitcher. And if I recall, it wasn't too long ago that people felt more inclined to trade away Stroman and keep Sanchez. Including me.

Yes but you're basing that expectation based on reaction to trades that were far less popular and that doesn't make any sense.

The ripple effect with Tulo/Donaldson/Martin/ is that they will certainly help draw interest from FA pitchers this offseason. I mean what pitchers wouldn't want to sign with a team feeling you have the run support and great defense behind you on any given night? Toronto has never been much of a draw for free agents, probably the bottom 10% but these acquisitions could change that going forward. With some money coming off the books, I'm looking forward to this offseason as much as ever.

If I recall, there were some prominent posters on here who supported the Dickey deal and thought that he was going to be a great No. 1 -2 pitcher here based on projections.

I woudn't say that's a certainty but I do agree that having a lot of high profile talent SHOULD help attract more talent.

I thought it was a worthy gamble. Hated the commitment to JPA though. I was hoping Thole of all people would steal his job.

I remember media members saying the exact thing after the Martin signing - that Toronto would be of more interest to pitchers now that they have an elite catcher.

Who has been their best starting pitching acquisition since the Martin signing?

Felix Doubront.

The Toronto media consistently overreacts to that kind of stuff. It's best to ignore the fluffy articles published after a big move.

Winning will make Toronto an attractive destination. There is no alternative.

Exactly. I didn't buy that argument the first time, I certainly won't now.

Agreed with your second point.

Well to say Toronto isn't more desirable for pitchers now with Martin behind the dish as opposed to Donair or JPA probably isn't right.

No they won't sign for pennies on the dollar, but a well respected back stop certainly doesn't hurt things in that regard.
