An interesting quote from Kris Bryant.

“There was definitely a chance, but I didn’t get offered anything, so obviously my only option was to go to school,” says Bryant.

I was always under the impression that the Jays made him a serious offer and he turned it down.

Well that's depressing. Did the Jays just draft him to cock-block other teams?

It was a bad trade but more often than not these top prospects bust. At the time of the trade it was reasonably justified. Maybe not for both TDA and Syndergaard, but AA was trading for a CY Young Winner after aquiring some significant assets. JJ flopping was catrastrophic and I'm pretty sure no one expected that. AA made his move and failed miserably, but our farm is once again stocked, and our team is in position to make a move. He is a better GM than most.

Fair argument. But coming off a great season or not Dickey was like 39 (I think) at the time. And we were talking about two great prospects. I think there were better trades that either could have been made a year earlier, or later if he sat and waited. I think AA got the go ahead to build a winner and he JP'd it. Remember when JP got some money, he went and blew it as fast as he could on whoever he could. I think AA did the same thing. He has made some great moves, I give him credit, and he has done a great job drafting as well, for the most part. I think assistant GM might be a better role though. He has some great ideas, but seems like he needs someone to 'overlook' these decisions.

This is why Rany is one of the best writers. Good lord Preller is in trouble

http://grantland.com/features/aj-preller-mlb-san-diego-padres-national-league-west/

It kind of feels like he picks and chooses which stats to display in order to make the Padres look worse, which seems dishonest. For example, he'll use ERA and FIP for Jesse Hahn to display that he'd be arguably the team's best starter but by xFIP, he'd be 4th best.

Also kind of wish he'd cut out using slash lines, especially comparing hitters going in and out of San Diego where obviously the slash line will suffer a bit. wRC+ is your friend, Rany.

"In 81 road games, however, they allowed 341 runs while posting a 4.04 team ERA, both marks just 10th in the NL. The dimensions of their stadium made their pitching staff look better than it really was and their offense look worse."

IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY

"San Diego’s offense is better this season, but not by much. The Padres rank ninth in the NL with 3.91 runs per game, and they’re fortunate to be there, since they rank next to last in the league with a .238 batting average, dead last with a .294 OBP, and 12th with a .368 slugging average. Their newly acquired hitters have all been disappointments to some degree."

Horrendous.

Yeah my first comment came about half way through that article, which was long winded and muddled. It was probably the worst baseball piece (where I've fundamentally agreed with the premise) that I've ever read. Just brutal.

Day 46. Finally completed the article. I'm cold and hungry and I hated it. I want to go home.

Preller is so bad i can't believe he still has a job. He had Grandal/Rivera/Hanigan at one point, now he just has Derek Norris who is pretty terrible.
