CrackerJack Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 just heard Jerry Howarth say for him it's Hutch.
flafson Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I would pick Stroman but i'd be shocked if it's not Dickey.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 There is an off day after the first game. Starting Dickey in game 1 wouldnt take full advantage of that Dickey Effect. I'd go with Stroman or Hutchison, with the other starting the 3rd game.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 What Krylian said. It SHOULD be Stroman, but Dickey uhhh... has earned it? Is older? I dunno. Some excuse.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Author Posted February 5, 2015 i'll predict that it won't be Dickey because they'll want Martin in there on opening day and - even if Russell will be catching Dickey's starts - they won't make them opening day batterymates ... Buehrle is out since the Yankees rock him ... so between Hutch & Stroman ... Hutch probably would have more composure ... Stro would be (perhaps) a little too pumped pitching in front of friends and family at the season opener in Yankee stadium ... however i'll guess that Stroman will be given the ball.
flafson Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Didn't JP catch Dickey on opening day?
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Author Posted February 5, 2015 Reasonable logic...but do you think Gibby will give it that much consideration? yeah, I think he'll first think of Dickey and then think (well who's catching him?) and then think (do we really want the Dickey-Martin battery to debut on the big stage at Yankee stadium for the season opener?) ... and then his thoughts will turn to Stroman.

So Dickey and Thole it is.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I want to be Carlos Stroman, but will ..... 1-Dickey 2-StroShow 3-Buehrle 4-Hutchison 5-Estrada CloZer-Cecil Setup-Sanchez
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Carlos? Carlitos Stroman is our best pitcher since Brandon Tallet.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I'd love to see it be Stroman as a sign of the team moving into the future. he is our future ace and is absolutely electric. He's proved he can deal with the big stage. edit: I'd be starting dickey 4th.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Stroman. I'd structure it like this: Stroman Dickey Hutchison Buehrle Estrada/Norris This looks good to me
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Author Posted February 5, 2015 So Dickey and Thole it is. so the Canadian star ... who just signed the biggest FA contract in team history ... and who is billed as being the undisputable character guy who's gonna (finally) lead this team to the promised land ... is gonna be riding pine on opening day at Yankee Stadium?
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Honestly, I would go with Buehrle.
StroShow Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Still think people are expecting too much from Stroman, hitters probably haven't figured him out yet, probably haven't bothered but they will this year. He can adjust though. He's got like 6 average or better pitches to work with.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Dickey is my starter, just because his knuckleball supposedly messes with timing for a game or two. Maybe 1-2 good hitters sit. Plus, I want to see how defensive gem Martin handles the knuckler. BTW, is that a proven fact? I'd like to see some statistical proof of the Dickey effect.
StroShow Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Yeah and I think he'll be good, I don't think he'll be as good as he was in '14 For sure but I still think he'll be the best Jays starter. I could see a season like Gray put up last year.

Martin could handle the Dickey's pitches, as the Yankees hitters.

Are you suggesting the Yanks will sit a couple of starters on opening day because Dickey is throwing?
Governator Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Dickey pitched well against Yankees last year, only 2 starts mind you but he was pitching in to the 7th scoreless against them one of those games. Stroman pitching in his hometown on opening day would be butterflies galore for him.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 To be honest, Buehrle was the first one that came to mind.......until I was reminded they are playing the Yanks. I think it should be Stroman (although I'd prefer to keep the pressure off him for now), but imagine it will be Dickey or Buehrle...I personally don't think Gibby will care about the Martin catching the knuckler angle or the Buehrle vs. Yanks thing.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Are you suggesting the Yanks will sit a couple of starters on opening day because Dickey is throwing? I suggest they sit all their starters, because I am a Jays fan and want them to win. What I am *saying* is that often teams will rest/sit a player who historically may have messed his swing up for a day or two after facing Dickey.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 http://www.breakingblue.ca/2013/11/23/the-r-a-dickey-effect/ I haven't done 2014 publicly yet. Wow, great article!!! It'd maybe make sense to have Stroman follow Dickey then? Anyway, super interesting read. The Dickey effect is real!
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Do not we optimize the Dickey effect in the rotation by having him start number 2 as well? Also Pitiching Buehrle four just even more sense as well then with are real or perceived lack of a pen! So yes start either Stroman or Hutch and let the good times Roll.... Ed!
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Stroman, Hutch or Norris would probably see the most benefit. I just would avoid Buehrle. Isn't he like, historically, 2-16 against the Yanks with an ERA north of 6? I can't recall, but yeah, no need to pitch him. I'd almost start one of our AAA depth starters than MB against the Yanks (spit!) to start the season. At least until he gets into a groove.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 I'm pretty sure no one expects that. Except me.
