You also have Navarro's money if you trade him, so it's not that far apart if they wanted to.

Plus, they can backload the contract to make it really cheap this year.

As much as I love the idea of getting Big Game James I think a realistic priority for us is RP, we'd be paper thin in the pen after signing Shields. I think shoring up the pen makes us more well balanced overall and allows us some flexibility with Sanchez & Norris competing for the 5th spot.

Scheppers or Clippard would be good. $9M is really $14M-reliever that we trade Navarro for's salary.

Except if a team has X dollars to spend, they usually leave a bit of breathing room. So 14m could really mean 10-11m, which should be enough for a closer and another reliever.

They'd be lucky to trade Navarro for just salary relief. There aren't many fits for him on other teams, I just don't see it happening. Keeping him isn't efficient but they put themselves in that position by signing Martin, so looking at the big picture it's not that bad of a situation.

As was mentioned yesterday. Chicago's a perfect fit for Navarro. Flowers isn't a ML starting catcher and with all the moves the sox made this offseason - they would appear to be lining up for a run at a playoff spot. They have a number of big power arms (which are also erratic) in their pen.

Here's my assessment of our holes in order of priority:

RP: We need a quality righty and a closer stat!!

OF: I think our depth is a concern, if Saunders misses time and/or Pompey underforms Kevin Pillar is the only option. I'm not sure how far that will take us..

2B: I'm actually surprisingly ok with Goins starting the year as a stopgap until Travis is ready. His bat is brutal but his defense is immeasurable to the pitchers and getting the team off the field.

SP- As I mentioned I'm totally ok with Sanchez or Norris getting a crack at the 5th spot to start the year but I'm not really keen on Estrada being anywhere but the pen. However if the Jays went balls deep with Shields I'd be ecstatic as our starting rotation is going to have some uncertainty and question marks.

and how do you know the 9M doesn't include the breathing room? The fact is no one but the FO knows how much we actually have, and basing it off what Griffin says is just as logical as mine or your best guess

That's a good point. Still, there's very few teams that would want Navarro at his salary. That's not saying he's not worth his salary necessarily, just that if there's only a couple of teams who might be interested, the likelihood of them working out a deal (even if it is just a PTBNL or w/e) is probably slim.

You could be right though, but Smoak could be absolutely terrible and Navarro is at least a reliable hitter, even if he's not a great DH. Wouldn't you rather use Navarro as a DH than some scrub off the waiver wire like Reimold?

There is no way I want Navarro getting regular at bats as our DH. I'd rather work the waiver wire and look for lightning in a bottle ala Steve Pearce....or even the guy from Minny who we picked up who was white hot for a month.

Except Griffin likely has better sources than we do.

Sure, but his entire article is based off of an assumption. If the FO has kept the payroll this much of a secret the entire offseason, I doubt anyone in the media actually knows what it is.

Would Chase Utley be a trade target? What would we have to give?

He's a nice target but we're on his NTC

For the OF, we also signed Carrera who is good depth. Dwight Smith Jr. will start the year in AA, and if he crushes it he could become a depth option pretty quickly.

No s***, Sherlock

And most efficient areas to add wins based on current roster:

No s***? The most efficient areas are not so evident. If AA comes across an opportunity to add more wins elsewhere at better value then that is what he will do. Constraining yourself to focusing only on specific areas is a nonsensical approach. But hey let's do that......

Wins can be added more efficiently at 2B than RP imo.

Someone should tell that to Jimcanuck. Apparently you need a list.

If they both exceed expectations that would be awesome because I'm a little nervous when it comes to our depth situation.

If we're going in that direction what about Zobrist..

Has anyone actually done variance analysis with respect to a teams total fangraph wins last year vs. their actual win total?

So many of you are throwing FWAR around, would be interesting to see how FWAR total of a team deviates from their actual win total.

Division Rival trade, owed less, plus Tampa still thinks they can compete this year. How Cute! Lol leads me to believe the cost to us would be greater then the need.

The opposite could be said for utley and philly. Hence may cost less to get and less to give! Plus he has a little more pop and is a LH bat that can bat third between Batista and EE!

What makes you think TB "thinks" they can contend this year?

I was just going to post this - anyone have the answer?

Probably not get to review the outliners, but Baltimore won so many games a couple of years ago with their strong pen. They were something ridiculous in 1 run games. We of course saw that last year with KC. On the flip side, there have been more than a few very good teams that simply imploded due to a poor bullpen that blew a bunch of games (Tigers last year?). I'd be curious to see what WAR they were projected to have as a team and how much a great or faulty bullpen affected the final results.
