Here's a list of articles discussing the Jays remaining payroll, it's stated in most of these articles the Jays current payroll is $119M with the target area being around $140M. Some of them state the Jays have $20M on top of an additional $5M with the pending Navarro trade left to use, while company men Davidi/Chisholm claim it could be as low as $5M-$10M after a myriad of reasons and obligated transactions (I heard Mike Wilner chimed in somewhere that it's a definitive $5M). I know you can bash any of these articles and I'm not completely on board with the ones from the Vancouver/Toronto Sun criticizing front office and their stinginess (although I agree with some of their points) however I'm also not completely buying what corporate shills Davidi & Chisholm are selling with their plethora of reasons why AA is tapped out now and woe is AA/Rogers, etc.. I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Assuming there's around $10M left plus the Navarro trade ($5M) I'm wondering what sleeper targets you guys would go after to fill the remaining holes (potentially a SP, 2 RP's, 2B, and some outfield depth) through free agency or via trade?

Do they take into account the CAD/USD exchange rate? The CAD dropped about 15% in recent months. 15% from $140M is $21M, so 140-21 = 119 which is where we at now.

All players in MLB get paid in USD. $140 payroll would be USD.

You missed my point, if target was $140M in September(just an estimate), now that CAD dropped, it's about equal to $119M.

That's been an interesting debate topic for a while, check out this post I stumbled upon detailing the Blue Jays payroll exchange rate and then check out the first comment below it:

I tend to agree with first commenters line of thought, you need to spend more to make more and not in a way where Rogers or AA should have carte blanche or be reckless with expenditure but if you've already spent x amount of dollars and you are now inches away from the playoffs why not make a calculated risk to increase profits via playoff tv ratings, revenue, and merchandising along with the surplus of selling out games and merchandising in the months prior to the playoffs while being in the playoff seeding and hunt. They failed enormously in that regard last season by stupidly turning their backs on the cries from the city, fans, players, (and even some of their own media) to bring in reinforcements at the trade deadline when we were up 3 games for a wildcard position. The increased payroll would've meant spending potentially another $5M for the remainder of the season to bring in moderate help but they stood pat and it blew up in their face when we flamed out. Nobody knows which way it would've turned out otherwise but it was a bad decision to do absolutely nothing and not bolster your odds of hitting a playoff jackpot. Let alone the PR damage by the city being outraged at Rogers and the cries of cheapskates echoing around every pub and living room..

What is the source of the target payroll

We were at $135M last year and Beeston claimed it would be going up, even in Davidi's corporate Sportsnet article above and amongst many other reports (corporate or otherwise) over the last few mths it's speculated at $140M. I would think that should be accurate or reasonably close..

didn't read any of the links, all speculative

IMO, there is never a hard payroll limit..... what rogers is willing to spend on player salaries would be linked to revenue predictions.... from advertising, ticket sales, merchandise, and then yes, the exchange rate gets factored in. All very volatile, probably updated weekly or monthly. Didn't AA say when he wants to do a deal, he would go to Beeston who in turn would check with the Rogers beancounters?

good news is oil (and the CDN dollar) will skyrocket once demand eclipses supply. guaranteed to happen as low margin producers like shale oil, Alberta producers, etc scale back production

Rogers has plenty of assets in US dollars, so I doubt the exchange rate plays much of a role.

Whatever the available payroll is, I'd give every penny to Big Game James and backload the last four years of the deal.

Have an open comp between Cecil, Sanchez and the RP we end up trading Navarro for to determine who pitches the seventh, eighth and ninth.

This would be an excellent finish to the offseason

I've been praying they do this ever since the Saunders trade. Every realistic cell in me tells me to smarten up but it won't stop me from dreaming

I would've been over the moon with either McCarthy or Liriano to be honest.

Ryan Cook.

Not sure if we have anyone Oakland would want, but he probably would have been their closer if he hadn't been injured to start the year.

Maybe Jose?

The blue Jays could have hedged out some or most of the currency risk already. I have no idea if they do any currency hedging or not. They may do zero currency hedging. I'd be interested to know if anyone has some insight.

I think he'd be a really solid addition. I'd rather talk players than the currency exchange...How about Carter Capps or Danny Farquhar from Seattle? Josh Fields, Nate Jones....those are a couple more names I'd love to see us acquire.

All of these guys would be nice, minus Jones cause TJS

The Canadian dollar has only dropped 8.7% this year. Lets not exaggerate in both term and amount meow.

In the last 12 months it went down almost 10%, if you add 2013 to the mix, it went down 16%.

It kinda makes sense for MLB to use TV revenue to balance inequities such as this, no?

The Blue Jays only have about $9MM left to spend this offseason, Richard Griffin of TheStar.com writes. The team’s top priority is upgrading the bullpen, which means the Jays aren’t likely to spend most of that money on a second baseman or an additional bat. (Griffin notes on Twitter that the Blue Jays’ apparent lack of funds likely means they won’t get Stephen Drew, who has reportedly been asking for around $9MM.) Griffin suggests that GM Alex Anthopoulos might prefer to add a younger pitcher, which could limit the Jays’ interest in older free agent options like Francisco Rodriguez, Rafael Soriano or former team closer Casey Janssen. Instead, he could pursue trade options like Tyler Clippard, Tommy Hunter, Tanner Scheppers, or one of any number of Athletics relievers. Here are more notes from the AL East.

Griffin says we only have 9M left. I guess the currency is a factor.

Clickbait, Griffin doesn't have a f***ing clue, in many more ways than one.

Well I thought all the forex traders on here had it all figured out? lol

With 9m left to spend, it definitely doesn't look like we're getting Shields :(

You also have Navarro's money if you trade him, so it's not that far apart if they wanted to.

Plus, they can backload the contract to make it really cheap this year.

Scheppers or Clippard would be good. $9M is really $14M-reliever that we trade Navarro for's salary.

Clippard would be sweet!
