Laika Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 ... but after acquiring Martin and Donaldson, it really does seem like the team is taking defense very, very seriously and being thorough about it. And Saunders and Smoak! All defensive upgrades, and some of them very significant (at least I'm assuming Donaldson over Lawrie is a numerical defensive upgrade).
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 I basically trust Blurnandez's assessment of this guy's defense as much as I trust any scout. Defensive scouting reports are just notoriously unreliable and borderline useless. In one of the scouting reports, a guy says he has the best throwing arm of any shortstop and one sentence later he says he doesn't think he can stick at SS. There's tons of hedging and smokescreening in all of these reports. Say what you will about Keith Law and how often he's wrong, at least he makes his (wrong) assessments plainly. If the Jays like his defense enough to sign him, I will be inclined to believe them. They've been right before (Brett Lawrie) and they've also been horribly, horribly wrong (the MI fiasco of 2013) but after acquiring Martin and Donaldson, it really does seem like the team is taking defense very, very seriously and being thorough about it. I'm going to trust that they will do their homework and get this one right. For the first time in a long time, I feel, perhaps naively, like I can actually give the team the benefit of the doubt and since that's just way more fun than being despaired all the time, I'm going to look at this signing with rose-coloured glasses if it does occur. Not to mention an OF of Saunders LF, Pompey CF, and Bautista RF. Bautista range leaves a little to be desired, but overall that's a great OF D.

I really can't see Donaldson' defense being any better than Lawrie's. It will be better in the sense that he will be on the field more but Donaldson probably got a boost from Oakland's park. Lawrie had such outstanding range and he didn't make many errors.

Both are probably roughly equal with the glove at 3rd when they're on the field, but Donaldson should be on the field more. Saunders should be a huge upgrade over Melky though, and Martin a massive one over Navarro. I will say that Lawrie's positional flexibility (especially when it comes to the shift) is rather nice though, and will probably be missed more than we realize.

From what I've read, Lawrie arm > Donaldson arm. Donaldson superior in other areas (Lawrie range to the left is elite, not so his range to the right).
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Blues Jays is one good of four teams than want Asdrubal Cabrera for two years. Asdrubal want a four year deal, but if he cant sign for four years, then, he want sign for just one year. http://m.espn.go.com/deportes/nota?storyId=2253419&src=desktop&cc=5800
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 lol 4 years for Asdrubal. I guess it's possible when the market is so weak.
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Probably the coolest name in baseball though I'm not sure that is worth a 4 year contract.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 I would be very happy with Asdrubal at 2B EDIT: after looking up his stats... Im not so sold anymore. He hasn't been good offensively since 2012

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 I was watching a lot of recent video on Toritani and i have to say his arm is a little better than i originally thought. His arm is better than Kawasaki's by a decent stretch, but weaker than Reyes' and Goins'. His footwork and quick release can make up a lot of it though, like Ozzie Smith did. He's overall a better defender at SS than Reyes hands down. He seems to have decent bat control and pitch recognition and should get on base at a decent clip ( .330-.350) in the majors, but his batting average will definitely drop in the MLB ( .250ish is my guess), but who cares if he can get on base. With Travis waiting in the wings and Reyes not apparently going anywhere soon, it seems like a stretch that AA will sign him, unless it's for one year with a team option. I honestly wouldn't have a problem if AA were to somehow unload Reyes somewhere and sign Toritani to 3/10 type deal, the guy is a good looking athlete. Trading Reyes is not happening, but imagine the payroll that would be set free to use elsewhere? Wow..

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Yeah he certainly looks like a viable SS, at least in highlight packages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrmjJs5Ak_Q

I like the idea of trading away Reyes and then signing BOTH Toritani and Lowrie. It would really shore up the infield defense, and I don't think we'd miss Reyes' bat.

Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Is Jed Lowrie really any better than Reyes at SS. Im not a big fan of trading Reyes at all. Especially with such a huge f***ing hole at second base that has been there for years now. Just ask the Mets how easy it is to replace SS. They've been looking for a new SS and leadoff hitter for over 3 years since the day Reyes left and they still havent filled those holes.

The only apparent hole Reyes would leave is a lead off type bat, but i think Pompey or Toritani could fill in without losing much OBP. The only downfall though is Reyes has the better average, which is valuable with men on base. The defensive upgrade would make up for that and more.

Toritani plays SS and Lowrie 2B. Plus you have some extra leftover money that you save from Reyes.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 No one is going to take Reyes at 3/70 left on his deal. Maybe trade him for Colon and then agree to eat another $20M the next two years, and the Mets might do it, but that's about it. The only other team is the Yankees but they got their SS now.

I would happily make that trade IF we could sign 2 middle infielders to man SS and 2B. Im just kinda tired of Reyes and his god-awful defense

I think you could move Reyes without adding more than 5-10 million. I mean Matt Kemp just got moved and Reyes has been a lot better than him in the last couple years. People underestimate how desperate some GMs act.

You want to watch f***ing Ryan Goins get 600 at bats playing SS. f*** no. Im sick of that s***. Absolute scrubs have been getting way to many at bats every year for this f***ing team.
