Not a fair assessment when playing in spurts. Over the course of consistent play for a season, Goins is a 1.5 - 2 WAR player.

And your response to this scouting report about Torits (yes I gave him a nickname...yes I'm prounouncing it wrong and calling him tourettes)

His already strong arm — believed by some to be the best among contemporary shortstops

You're really f***ing dumb.

Are you on drugs? This guy hasn't seen one MLB game in his life and you're saying he's better than Derek Jeter?

GTFO.

"his reputation"

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Derek Jeter is not that good defensively. Perfect example of a "non-major league short stop" playing short stop because he has a good reputation and bat, same with Jose Reyes.

Just saying Toritani may be as good as these guys defensively... but wouldn't hit quite as much...

If Reyes or Jeter were to walk up at age 33 or 34 I doubt any one would put them at short stop... a lot of the reason they were there is because of reputation.

"Major League Short stop" is a slippery term... it's not black and white. Players need to be evaluate as a whole package.

This is hilarious.... you understand that "playing in spurts" doesn't matter?? If he played in spurts for 100 years and amassed 10000 at bats his numbers would still stabilize. There is nothing magical about "playing in spurts".

You might have a point that he doesn't have enough playing time yet... but that is the sample size. It would be true if he played 80 games in a row.

If a player you didn't like "played in spurts" and played well you'd be the first one to say "league hasn't adjusted to him yet".

SPURT:

1.

gush out in a sudden and forceful stream.

I can't remember that far.

Gruber and Wardhenke have tunnel vision. Goins has to be Gruber's long lost son or a relative of some sort. Wardhenke doesn't understand how old middle infielders prefer grass/ countries named America over non-grass/ countries named Canada

Gruber has trouble when it comes to negative numbers.... when told Goins has negative WAR per game Gruber thinks that he'll just make it up by playing more games.

A negative plus a negative is a positive right? I'm sure I heard something like that in math class...

Where I'm from things get more hostile during the holliday. I have seen some crazy s*** in my life and most of it happens during Christmas. Including fights over a Tickle Me Elmo. Everyone is drunk and everyone is pissed off at somebody. Its about survival.

I haven't had those kind of problems with my family... but at "work"... yeah crazy s*** has happened just before christmas several times. I don't know why. Maybe because there are year end deadlines and right around the 20th it becomes apparent no more work is going to get done the rest of the year.

As I get older I save my hostility for this message board. It's a good way to blow off some steam. Will Ryan Goins stick?? Probably f***ing not. So go f*** your self Gruber. Not the nicest thing to say to Gruber... but for most people it is probably better to tell off Gruber than their familry or their boss.

Gruber's love for Ryan Goins is f***ing classic. Too many amazing quotes come from him.

it's the Gruber system. the random weighting system that allows for s***** below replacement level players who suddenly get 100 extra AB and those 100 extras suddenly make a -2 WAR player into a 2 WAR player. like duh!? lol

Its not by games, its by 600 PA

This is a perfect example on how you guys view players as "non human", and just go by numbers, whether the 600 PA were derived in one season,or over the course of three to four seasons. For anyone who has personally been in a competitive on the fence type atmosphere like Goins or Pillar and similar types, then you would no how it feels to feel the pressure to perform in a small window of time or else get demoted. Of any professional sport, baseball is by far the worst sport to play in these types of conditions. Before Goins was called up for the first time, you all were speculative regarding his defense, even though there were several posters here that claimed he was a superior defender at SS and 2B based on what we witnessed at Bisons' games. Board "this doesn't mean he'll perform well defensively in the MLB" What? Why? Because the ball parks in the bigs play different? I'm just making this point because it was f***ing ludicrous to make such a statement, and because some projection on fangraphs says so.

Now i know Goins will probably never hit well enough to land a starting gig in the show (barring an injury), but i see enough in his swing that can possibly change that. I can honestly see him,if given a guaranteed amount of playing time, hit in the .250 / .300 / .390 range, but that's JMO. If so, combined with his defense, would a viable middle infield option if the team he plays for has a lot of offense in the line up. You may think i sound old fashioned for saying this but, defense is a really important thing, especially up the middle. There are many intangibles that don't show up in advanced metrics, such as pitch count saved, thus improving the pitcher's mind set for example.

I'm not denying this Japanese kid can play, but his arm in the bigs can only play at 2B, otherwise he's a below average defender. He's not throwing out speedy left handed hitters from the whole at SS in the bigs, and not many fast RHB either. He's a defensive liability at SS, regardless of his glove. He may be able to get away with playing 3B in short spurts if needed, but not much else except 2B.

I'd rather roll the dice with Izturis/Goins at 2B for a few months and hope Travis plays well enough in Buffalo and gets called up. Use the $4mil per on RP or another decent outfield bench option with speed.

Tortilla has a rocket arm according to scouting reports. That's more reliable then you watching a couple of videos.

Goins is an AAAA player. Good enough for spot duty.

We just grabbed Ezequiel Carrera on a minor league deal. If we just want a speedy 4th outfielder (apparently Pompey doesn't count, whatever...) we've already got one.

Let me ask you this.. If he hits .245 / .300 / .390 over the course of a full season, will he put up a 2.0 ?
