burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Does it really? In that case Drabek is done 6.18 K/9 in AAA. Avg FB velo was 91.1 in his short time with the Jays last year.
nutz003 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Sanchez would be best utilized in the rotation. He proved he can pitch in the Bigs last season, and showed great control for a young pitcher. Forget about AAA, he is not a fragile piece of glass who needs babying and protection. He is a professional athlete. He has the stuff to get hitters out, and would benefit way more from pitching to Martin 5+ innings every five days than a minor league catcher. I would rather have him pitching with a broken arm than Happ or Estrada in the 5th spot. AA will not waste him this year in the minors or in the pen, guaranteed. He said he is stretching him out as a starter, odds are he will start.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 I think AA has made his 2B move. I think he'll try to add to the OF with a guy that can play CF. If he goes out and gets a 2B, then he would've been better off keeping Gose to compete with Pompey and Pillar for playing time instead of having Travis at AAA while basically handing the CF job to Pompey. We'll see, no one saw the Jays signing Martin, except Blair of course, to many a poster's chagrin, so who knows how this thing will shake out. Agree and besides the time to invest in a MIF is after 2015 when Izturis contract runs out. And Reyes has to split SS with DH starting 2016.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Sanchez has options and best place for him is depth in Buffalo On the flip side, Sanchez probably performs similarly, if not better, than Happ in the rotation next year. The monetary difference could be pretty close to the cost of Drew on a one year deal as he'll be looking to rebuild his value, to say nothing of likely getting a decent reliever for Happ. Of course, with Boras, who the hell knows.

Stroman seemed to look pretty good plugged into the rotation last year rather than in a reliever role, and I am guessing Sanchez would as well. I think you will see Happ traded before the offseason is done.

Tough to say between Sanchez and Happ. If you are suggesting moving Happ and putting Sanchez in his place, the Jays then have very little SP depth. Of course, can stick a journeyman or two in Buffalo, but in a contending year having a Sanchez and Norris in Buffalo is great depth for both the SP and the bullpen. And we know a couple of pitchers are going to get injured or s*** the bed.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I think Norris will land a regular spot in the rotation on the big club before Sanchez.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 Happ has better 2014 stats as a MLB starter than Sanchez in Buffalo. Case closed. Sanchez 2014 SSS bullpen results notwithstanding.

He was a short stint reliever in his 3 innings last year and was topping out at 92.

I'm not going to consider Romero, but it will be kind of interesting to see if he bounces back after the surgery. Our depth isn't that big a concern imo.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 I hope this is sarcasm nope you realize that Happ in Buffalo would have a line like 16-5, and 2.10 ERA, right? Happ > Sanchez as a MLB starter at this point in time
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Lot's of new posters since we got Josh. Welcome yall.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 nope you realize that Happ in Buffalo would have a line like 16-5, and 2.10 ERA, right? Case closed? Hardly, you realize young players develop and improve? Happ is what he is - a #5 starter. Sanchez has upside to be much better than this. Whether he realizes that upside - we will find out.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Hochevar is probably the only guy I'd give money too. Sign Josh Outman on the cheap too. Cecil Hochevar Loup Outman Redmond Delabar/Drabek Hendriks There's also Estrada if Happ stays. Wouldn't mind one of Neshek, Crain or Gregerson.

Sanchez has upside to be much better than this. Whether he realizes that upside - we will find out. I'm a Sanchez booster. I see him as a future front line starter. But history is rife with examples of pitchers rushed to the bigs too early. Sanchez needs to start 2015 in Buffalo and dominate. If that happens, THEN move Happ to fill a hole on the roster or replace an injured starter.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 LOL, why is Ricky Romero the third most searched player on FanGraphs right now, behind only Donaldson and Lawrie? ....and why does Baseball Reference say his nickname is RR Cool Jay? *shiver*

Happ > Sanchez as a MLB starter at this point in time I wouldn't disagree with Happ in the rotation on opening day is better for the Jays then Sanchez. I like Happ he does his job well, but like I said I hope to see Sanchez get his chance at the rotation if injuries, lack of production occurs early.

However if AA can get a useful piece back for happ (or Navarro) then Norris or Sanchez can step into that slot
SAAviour Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I didn't realize drabek is sitting at 91... That was his 2nd tommy John to so less likely to bounce back, damn. I thought he was at 95 still.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Still think the priority should be a 2B that can play multiple positions...and hit. I've said it before Valbuena is still such a good fit for this team. Projected to go 240/.330/.388 but can play 2B and LF. The team has 8 current projected players who are 29 or older and zero depth behind their big 5 players. No team can replace 3-5 win players but as it stands right now the Jays would be replacing Bautista, Reyes, EE and Donaldson with likely below replacement level players. Having a Valbuena cover potentially 2B, but also allows the Jays to have Travis as the replacement to injuries to Donaldson, Reyes or Bautista (with Pillar or Dirks moving to RF and Travis or Valbuena to LF). It's not optimal but it would be better than right now. I just don't know what Valbuena costs us (they asked the Yanks for Severino last year). As for starters. The Jays are way better off waiting it out with what they have. If everyone they have pitches well enough, it puts the Jays in a great position to move one to fill a hole or then upgrade the staff. Not everything needs to be done in the off-season...sometimes knowing exactly what you have is important.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Okay. However if AA can get a useful piece back for happ (or Navarro) then Norris or Sanchez can step into that slot Happ is just a place holder for Sanchez or Norris, AA should start Sanchez in the minors until he's stretched out and bring him up into the rotation. Don't know how Norris gets in the rotation unless Dickey or Buerhle are traded or somebody gets injured.

Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Jed Lowrie makes to much f***ing sense If Reyes gets hurt then he can shift over beautifully and then hopefully Devon Travis will be ready to make some sort of an impact.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 As a fan I just don't enjoy watching Happ pitch one bit haha.
