canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 he's versatile and the advanced statistics say he is an average defender. He's a character guy who gets on base. There's no reason you can't sign him and find room for him in buffalo if Travis does get the nod with the big club out of spring training. Exactly the problem is you cannot google how character can help a team! His defense isn't great but it's not bad either. Platoon him with Goins for now. Does Travis have a good shot at cracking the lineup out of spring training? Regardless we have options at 2nd. With or without Kawa but I would sign him for cheap and focus on LF and RP
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 How do you justify that Berti > Goins at the MLB level at the plate based on 1 season of AA ball? Not to mention you're suggesting he has equal defensive skills? Goins has better minor league stats across the board as a better comparative and is a proven hot glove at 2B in the majors. Berti's defense is reported to be elite and he has more speed than Goins. Berti likely has similar hands, footwork, and more range. At the plate probably closer to a wash although Berti's minor stats tend to show higher OBP and slugging compared to Goins. We will see. Expect Berti to get a long look at ST.

Governator Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Crazy thought. What about Dan Uggla in a 1 year +1 option deal? He's older yes but he still sports a career .801 OPS vs RHP and at worst a league average defender at 2B. Could be an option until Travis is ready since no one wants Izturis and likely there's no big spending there.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I'm fine with Goins or a pleasant surprise Devon Travis at 2B. as long as we upgrade LF, DH, and the bullpen. A stud pitcher would be nice too, but that can't be counted on. Perhaps a mid-season trade for a pitcher is more realistic if we are within striking distance.

Gorlak Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Berti isn't even a league average AA bat... Travis is the only non dumpster fire option in the org at the moment.

Strikes out more than Colby rasmus He was -3.2 uzr/150 last year. Hardly league average.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Uggla is nowhere near a league average defender at 2B. I don't know him well, what happened to him the last couple years? Looks like he's really declined and he's 34? He was a legit masher a few years back.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 anyway nobody worry, my obsession is nowhere near the level of the gruber-goins lovefest
Lawrie22 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 @Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #BlueJays considering free agent Alberto Callaspo for 2B. View him as potential buy-low, bounce-back candidate. Wouldn't be the worst signing…. A Callaspo/Izturis pairing at 2nd would not be horrible

canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I'd prefer Kawa over Callaspo/Izturis and believe is a good platoon with Goins

Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I'd prefer Kawa over Callaspo/Izturis and believe is a good platoon with Goins Platoon is a situation where one player bats LH and the other RH to provide better splits than one player provides The mascots swing L. Goins swings L. How is that a platoon?

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Izturis for Scutaro swap!
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Defensive platoon. One can play good MLB defence and the other is below average at 2b
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 One can play good MLB defence and the other is below average at 2b And one is a average hitter in MLB and one is below average...Your saying that's not a platoon? I don't understand...

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I hope the Jays don't lose Andy Burns in the R-V draft. I think he could bring value as a utility IF and even play some OF who has hit LHP well in the minors (I think).
Lawrie22 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 My personal preferance for 2B is Jed Lowrie

TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Has there been any talk about non-tendering Estrada? Projected to make $4.5M+. If they werent prepared to pay McGowan $4M, I don't see them paying Estrada $4.5M unless they know he will start (god forbid)
