LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 There used to be a time when it was exceptionally rare for a player to jump from AA to the majors. Alex Anthopoulos has made this exceptionally common in recent years. And it reeks of desperation.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Just a note, the whole MLB.com thing where they ranked him #9 in the Jays system, I'd take that with a grain of salt. If he's really in the top 100 MLB prospects (I read he was #84 a few times, not sure what list those people are going by) that puts him more around the #5 territory, around Hoffman and Pompey. Yeah either that or the Jays have 9 guys in the Top 100? lol I think you are right.

Seems to finally be valuing the Hit tool a bit more now.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 according what most are saying Detroit's farm was absolutely shyte before this trade... how does it rank now that they traded one of the few guys who were rated marginally well? lol

kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I heard he had some sort of injury to begin the season. Not sure if that has anything to do with the numbers but what I read was that the timeframes of the injury healing and his uptick in production were similar. That could all be a bunch of BS but I did read it somewhere. This is from Badlers BA write up on the deal. I posted it on page ten of this thread Travis missed six weeks early in the season with an oblique injury, and the effects carried over into May, but from June on he batted .312/.379/.481.

Your best prospect just netted a 4th OF. (Not that I wouldn't rather have a team that makes the playoffs with a s***** farm then a team with a good farm that never makes the playoffs).

Your best two prospects for an 40 old end-rotation starter.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I like that we dont lose a draft pick for a 2B. This frees up a lot of money to be spent elsewhere as well. Good trade for us though I really liked Gose's Defense and that is going to be hard to replace. This only looks bad if the FO was relying on Melkey resigning and no plan B.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Gose probably platoons with Davis in CF next year lol. Jokes aside, that should be a pretty productive platoon and always having one or the other available to pinch run will be a nice luxury.

I'm sure every time AA is on the phone the first thing he hears is "Stroman" I'm glad the Stro-show is still a jay. Sanchez too... I hope we hit April with both those guys still in the fold.

The way I look at it is......Lets say Gose had a s***** spring (very good chance) we would have to carry him as he was out of options. his bat is something that needs a lot of time and work and thats something we can't afford to carry. So now we trade him for a guy with options and a position of weakness. Regardless whether Melky signs or not, this was a solid trade.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 great trade funny it happens the same day Baseball America lists its top 10 2015 Detroit Tigers prospects and Devon is No. 1 lol now can they make a similar trade, Navarro and Happ for a young OF..... then sign Martin
nextyear Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 (edited) Personally I can't see how a player who hasn't played a game in the majors can be considered a legitimate second baseman. I have to wonder if once again the Blue Jays have been mesmerized by offensive numbers. Devon Travis seems to have quite few errors in the minors - http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=travis000dev but his fielding percentage seems to be decent. The Blue Jays got rid of a great defensive player who couldn't learn to hit consistently at the majors for a potential second baseman who has never played in the majors. It is tough to get excited by this trade. It seems like the Blue Jays just traded Anthony Gose for a lottery ticket. Edited November 14, 2014 by nextyear

TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Scouting Book: The Best Second Base Prospects for 2015 Joe Panik Dilson Herrera Devon Travis Forrest Wall Taylor Lindsey Delino DeShields Avery Romero Tony Renda Jorge Polanco Ronnie Rodriguez Kensuke Tanaka Rob Refsnyder Domingo Leyba Ryan Brett Cory Spangenberg Tyler Kelly Jacoby Jones Jose Ramirez Hernan Perez Angelo Gumbs Listing 2B prospects is like listing the hottest fat chicks though. They just get bumped by real hot chicks that put on a few pounds. In the case of 2B's they get bumped by SS's that can't stick

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I would really love Stephen Drew on a one year pillow contract. Should come cheap and has a great chance to rebound and more importantly when the Jose Reyes likely injury happens we can slide Drew over to SS and plug in Travis and we won't be f***ed. Also creates a bridge to Travis. Hopefully we can make nice with Boras.

His arm/speed/defense tools are good enough for him to have Dyson/Bourjos-esque 2+ win seasons in limited time. We saw glimpses this year with 1.3 fWAR in <300 PA.
