The Dodgers will name former Athletics assistant GM Farhan Zaidi the team’s new general manager this week, according to a tweet from Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Zaidi, 37, had been with Oakland for ten years and was promoted just before last season.

The club is also set to add former Padres GM Josh Byrnes, Mark Saxon of the Los Angeles Times reports on Twitter. Though it is not yet known what position he will hold, his addition is a “done deal,” per Saxon.

Combined, the addition of the well-regarded Zaidi and experienced Byrnes represent major additions to the front office of new president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.

I see Friedman is already enjoying his new found wealth.

I don't understand how you guys can just start rooting for another team because of their front office. This game used to be about the players and fans were committed to their teams regardless of who was in charge.

We root for well run front offices because that's the direction baseball has headed, it's really fun to see proper roster construction and the exploiting of market inefficiencies by people smarter than most GM's in the league. In my case I haven't converted from a Jays fan to a Dodgers fan, but it's really nice to see a team doing it right for a change.

The Dodgers have somehow managed to recruit my two favorite baseball executives in the same month. A few weeks ago, I probably would have put Zaidi, Friedman and maybe Epstein as dead last in terms of executives I could see changing ball clubs.

Wow, I'm so f***ing jealous of Dodger fans! Must be nice to have a franchise that gives two shits about winning. Meanwhile, we're stuck with the dumbest front office in the league.

Yankees fans would disagree.. they're as bad as Toronto's.

Dodgers fans might not want to cheer yet.. they still have a lot of work to do, with needs for a SS with HanRam leaving, and need to deal one or two of their OFs, along with decreasing payroll. How is Friedman and Zaidi going to pull a rabbit out of their hat to get those OFs dealt?

Dodgers have figured that throwing cash at the front office is the best way to spend.

Probably because player payroll is being cut this offseason due to the busted TV deal and aims to get down to the luxury tax. Plus, they want to improve their front office so they can help find ways to make a team more effectively than just throwing money at free agency.

Ok, maybe my comments weren't great.. but this Dodgers fanbase has been waiting for a World Series for 26 years, and heck, Don Mattingly was rumored to be on the firing line this offseason.. but they chose to keep him for now. But you can imagine there will be pressure to fire him if the Dodgers start slow in 2015.

By a mile now too. Even pittsburgh/milwaukee/balt/kc have turn things around. The Jays are stuck in shittsville with AA being the mayor.

Hey xposbrad!

You can prove you're smarter than the mayor of shittsville (and the rest of its residents) by entering the board's free agent prediction contest.

I always wonder how the dynamics of the front office works in situations like this, with a club president and GM, both of baseball operations ilk. For example, Hoyer and Epstein were both GM's, Epstein was hired by the cubs as President, then he hired Hoyer as GM. Similarly, Friedman was hired as President of Baseball ops, and Zaidi is GM (although Zaidi was asst GM in Oak)

Do they act like Beeston and Anthopoulos, where the GM has 'final say' on day-to-day baseball moves such as roster mgmt, waiver claims, trades, free agent signings (within the payroll parameters, of course), etc. or is it more like AA and LeCava, where Hoyer and Zaidi are GM's in name only, but they're in fact functioning as assistant GM's do in a Beeston/AA/LeCava title situation.

Guess it doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things, but just something i've wondered.

Big whoop. We've been waiting for one solitary playoff game for almost as long, let alone a World Series.

Their incompetent manager is on the hot seat... ours has had two chances here despite nobody else wanting him, ironclad job security, and countless excuses. Not really seeing how their situation is worse than ours in any way.

No one is as bad as Amaro, sorry. It's not very close. Amaro could only dream of having contracts like EE's and Bautista's.

I thought this was a rather interesting quote from the link:

In spite of his background, Zaidi is known as a proponent of utilizing traditional scouting and focusing on tools in identifying talent.

He kind of sounds like an AA clone.

Wow...didn't know he was Canadian.

We tried hiring Billy Bean's assistant GM once.

Is this guy really that good?

Yes he is. He is Pakistani Canadian and the first south Asian GM level executive in history of north american professional sports

Holy s*** dude...if this front office was "the dumbest" this board wouldn't be having year-long orgasms over Pompey and Stroman...and to a lesser extent for Norris and Sanchez. AA is pretty good at some aspects of his job, the problem is he's annoyingly bad at the easy things like simple roster management...or is too lazy to do his job correctly.

But yeah, I keep forgetting that you're the guy who would cum at the prospect of Toronto being hit like Hiroshima and Chernobyl combined...Blue Jays suck...Raptors suck...I haven't seen you say s*** about the Leafs but I'm 100% sure you feel the same way about them....everything about the city of Toronto sucks to you but yet you seem to pass yourself off as a Toronto sports fan by default because Montreal lost its baseball team and never had an NBA one.
