Hat's off the the Pit Bull. Overall, He pitched as well as could be expected and isnt being a value sinkhole. no issues with him coming back next year unless the FO can trade him and actually pick top value assets and the spend the savings on legit talent.

I have no faith that will happen though, so having him back for one more year is fine.

Did MArtin leave there on bad terms? Beckett, Hanley, and Billingsley are of the books, and I can see them targeting Martin, especially if Hanley walks.

I don't know what terms he left on. I really think they're going to go after pitching though, and 1 year of Buehrle might be a lot more attractive to them than a major long term deal.

Guy is awesome. Everyone was worried that he'd be a 4+ ERA guy with the move to the AL East

He really wasn't impressive in that Marlins season despite pitching half his games in Florida. I can only speak for myself but I didn't think the A.L. East was the issue per say, I just thought it would expose him as a declining pitcher. Turns out he still had plenty in the tank. Dude just continues to find ways to succeed with less and less velocity. Who know? He might keep this up for awhile longer yet. You simply cannot write this guy off. He's just a freak at doing everything a pitcher can do to help himself short of throwing hard.

17 years as per Sportsnet tonight.

They must've only gone back to a particular year. Cy Young had 19 consecutive 200+

And also threw 15 consecutive years of 300+

Edit: Looks like Warren Spahn was the man Sportsnet was referring to.

Last game he's pitching all season, and even so a very reasonable pitch count.

The game means absolutely nothing to the Jays even if somehow he blew it.

And they couldn't let the guy finish the 9th to go for the shutout.

f***, I miss old-school baseball.

Yep. They referenced since 1901 so Cy Young was not included, good catch.

The game didn't mean anything to us, but we were playing a team very much in the wild card race (they would have been 2 back if they had won). We owe it to the other teams to do everything possible to try to win that game.

And keeping the vet in there who is pitching well at a reasonable pitch count is not exactly tossing the game away. Anyways, he didn't pull a David Wells or anything out there when being pulled so I don't think he cared so much so I guess I shouldn't either.

Maddux's career was simply locked in beastmode status. I think he used the Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start cheat code to unlock God mode.

And he has a great choice in pitching coach influences! A lot of pitchers nowadays could use this advice:

Greg Maddux credits Pole as a major influence, and a significant contributor to his success. In a 2005 interview, he said, "I remember when Dick Pole told me one day, ‘Why don’t you stop trying to strike guys out? Just try to get them out, and you’ll probably strike out just as many guys, if not more. He was right. I’ve always tried with two strikes just to make a pitch and get the guy out. You get a lot of strikeouts just on accident.

You have to love low maintenance, professional players who just do their job dependably and never get hurt. We don't have enough of those. Nobody "stabilizes" a rotation the way this guys does. Agree he's been a slightly under appreciated cornerstone of the team for two years.

Remember when many of us complained about the dog comments and his possible trade unhappiness? Bygones and we over reacted. Sorry Mark.

How does Maddux compare to Buehrle defensively? He had 18 gold gloves so he certainly had the reputation of a great fielder. Seems like in some way he was Buehrle with better stuff.

The fact that he was so tore up about not being with his dog should have clued us in that he was a pretty swell guy.

Someone should bump some of the GDT's from July/August when he getting absolutely destroyed.

Love MB but he doesn't want to be here and the market should be good. Trade him.

From what I recall he had middle-infielder type reflexes and was very good defensively. It was talked about a lot because of all the awards he won.

His pitching abilities were definitely superior to Buerhle's.

Here’s the surprise: Greg Maddux and Kenny Rogers are far and away the two best fielding pitchers in the Plus/Minus System since we started it in 2003. (...) It is incredible that Maddux and Rogers are number one and number two while the number three guy, Livan Hernandez, is a very distant third. This says two things to me: 1) The Gold Glove voters know what they’re doing when it comes to pitchers. Relying primarily on visual evidence, they’ve seen the excellent glove work by Maddux and Rogers. 2) The Plus/Minus System works. It comes up with the same answers as the Gold Glove voters.

That's some seriously circular logic from James.

Yeah. If someone posted that here they'd be called out by like 10 people.

Interesting to note that Maddux unlike Buehrle wasn't as good at dominating the running game. He was actually quite bad at it according to James. I guess Maddux just didn't need it to control the runners to be successful the way Buehrle does.

1. Advantage lefty

2. Maddux allowed fewer baserunners

Maddux had 7 seasons in a row of 200IP with sub 3.00 ERA. 2 of those back-to-back with sub 2.00 ERA (1.56, 1.63). These are better than Kershaw numbers for 400IP+.

That's incredible

During a hitters dominated era in the sport, no less

And that Pedro did the same a couple years after him. Kevin Brown did too.
