Don't you just love posts where all credibility goes down the drain in the first few lines?

the bullpen is the main reason the jays didn't make postseason, and Delabar was being counted on to be the late inning righty with Cecil the late inning lefty.... instead McGowan was getting thrown out there and blew several leads

Posted

without a doubt if you were to point out just one area, it was the back end of the bullpen. Janssen had 5 blown saves in 29 chances, although 1 of them wasn't his fault though. Loup who was good this season but tightened up when given the save opportunity and converted just 4 of 9 opportunities. McGowan was 1 for 5. Santos was 5 for 8, and Cecil was 5 for 7. More games of course were blown in the 7th and 8th innings by Santos and Delabar, McGowan..etc.

When you look back on the season and think about all the games the Jays gave away vs the games they stole...there were way more games they gave away than stole. I don't think most would have thought the back end bullpen guys would have cost us the season going into it, but that was the case.

Of course the injuries to the lawrie, lind, Colby, reyes, melk man and EE throughout the season didn't help matters any, but if the back end of the bullpen would have been good they would have weather the storm of those injuries. Unfortunately the back end of the bullpen wasn't even average...it was crap.

you see it as "the jays blew a 3-2 lead with their bullpen"

i see it as "better than 21st pitching, better than near replacement 2B/3B/wherever Lawrie isn't, and better than sub-replacement catching could have made it a 4-1 game instead"

I don't know if you're being a smartass or just accidently posting in the wrong thread..RA just struck a guy out!..lol

Spanky a smartass? never!

???

sometimes I make a post thinking it's the gameday thread and realize after I had switched and was reading another thread by accident. It comes with old age...I guess I'm the only one who does that!

Who are your top 3 then?

1. The entire front office who are responsible for putting an above replacement level at each position team on the field and failed to do so

2. The entire front office who are responsible for putting an above replacement level at each position team on the field and failed to do so

3. The entire front office who are responsible for putting an above replacement level at each position team on the field and failed to do so

The lack of a quality bench was one of the biggest issues. We just didn't have the ability to deal with injuries properly, or to deal with the necessary platoons. Fortunately having Mayberry and Valencia could go a long way towards helping that next year. Even more so if Izzy returns and is in superutil role.

The pen was unfortunate, but it also wasn't something we really could have addressed differently. The lack of depth was.

But they did mate.... 2B was weakest, but both Kawa and Izturiz were +

Izturis is probably replacement level. Kawa qualifies for near replacement.

Last year the bullpen was the strength of the team, and the one area that didn't need to be improved on heading into 2014. This year, the same cast of characters single-handedly cost the team the playoffs, apparently.

There's a lesson to be learned here: worry about a rotation that's 5-deep and lineup/bench that's 12-deep, and support those guys with quality talent in AAA. The bullpen will sort itself out. Or it won't. But it's such a crapshoot that investing in it while having other holes in the roster is a terrible idea.

The 2014 Jays were replacement-level at 2B and C. They've given over 1600 plate appearances to Navaro, Kawasaki, Pillar, Thole, Diaz, Mastroianni, Reimold, Johnson, Goins, and Sierra. That's more than 26% of playing time wasted on replacement-level scrubs that the FO should have known were replacement-level. The quickest way to improve is to cut the fat. But they won't.

Jays were 5th in AL offense. Why are you talking about PA in a discussion of why they failed in 2014?

I'd think the # of PA given to s***** players is pretty relevant.

Not to belabor the point, but look what guys like Turner and Van Slyke have done from the bench for LA, or what Oakland has done with their great depth. Then look at how the back half of Toronto's roster was cobbled together seemingly without any kind of plan. It's been that way for five years now under this regime.

The failures of the bullpen (prime reason being Delabar non-performance) and defense (Rasmus and Lawrie absence chief culprits) is even more relevant to a discussion of why the jays failed to make PS

I just looked at the all mighty fangraphs and they have Navarro at a 2.0 WAR for the season. Navarro playing the way he did making 3 mil was the least of our worries. We need to address 2nd base and strengthen depth. I agree that the bullpen is a crapshoot and so are injuries. Both didn't go the way of the Jays because all Toronto sports franchises are cursed. If we just moved the team to Vancouver, all problems would be solved.

What a stupid post. They were 10th in baseball in positional fWAR (worse if you account for Navarro's framing). Guys like Bautista, Edwin, Melky, Lind, and Reyes delivered this year. They were mostly healthy, and extremely productive as a group. To top it off, the rotation was better than anyone could have expected.

Now consider that a quarter of the playing time was wasted on replacement-level talent that was clearly replacement level before the games were played, and I don't know how you can see this season as anything other than an opportunity wasted by incompetence and inattention to detail. There were wins to be added there. Easy wins. They didn't add them.

Navarro is one of the worst pitch-framers in baseball. He's literally bad enough to eliminate virtually all the value his bat provides.
