jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I'll even include the old-school stats for this one: Mike Trout rankings: HR: 5th RBI: 1st (lol) R: 2nd ISO: 4th wOBA: 3rd wRC+: 2nd (a measly 68% above league average) Not very eye popping indeed. His batting average isn't .300 though

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Whatever, no one should have a problem with Kershaw winning, I just find it odd that one of the anti-hive people is talking in absolutes, especially over a very debatable topic.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I'd pick Trout in the AL and Kershaw in the NL. I still have issues with framing data and how it's all given to the catcher or I'd probably be willing to go to Lucroy. I honestly don't think the catcher is that responsible for so many runs and subsequently so many wins based on one skill, but I'm willing to concede it is a possibility. Also, nobody mentioning Posey? I didnt see anyone mention Altuve yet. I guarantee some dinosaur writers will be enamoured with the hits leader and his 55+ stolen bases when all is said and done. He'll probably get more top 10 votes than many expect. Abreu should be very much in the conversation, but as a rookie he will be shunned since he's a slam dunk for ROY. Cano will get all the credit for Seattle, so he'll get a lot of support I'm sure even though Seager is criminally ignored by nearly everyone outside of Seattle. Cruz will get lots of votes even though he sucks at everything not related to hitting homers.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Will Cruisin' Chris get a down-ballot vote? I say yes.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Will Cruisin' Chris get a down-ballot vote? I say yes. He's like a poor man's Nelson Cruz this year.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 If you want to dish it out GD you need to be able to take it and not hide behind the Kid label. Too many on this board like to ridicule everyone not in their selected group but can't take anything back. This board does not exist without a bunch of posters supporting it. I can take it just as well as anyone, but if he's as superior as he seems to think he is one would think he'd act like it.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 My problem with Kershaw winning the NL MVP is that he might just barely pass the 200 IP mark this season. He's still in the conversation though I'd still give it to Stanton or McCutchen over Kershaw first.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Exactly, 6.2 WAR, without pitch framing data, if Kershaw doesn't win, it should go to Lucroy, he's a beast. Nah he sucks you should trade him to me you bike.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Exactly, 6.2 WAR, without pitch framing data, if Kershaw doesn't win, it should go to Lucroy, he's a beast. Yeah. It's not like you need to buy his gaudy framing numbers to like him for MVP. Guy leads the NL in fWAR by a third of a win.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Martin's available, Meeeeeeeeh maybe. I'll have two of Susac/Zunino/Iannetta next year though and that'll be nice. Susac has like a 147 wRC+ jeez lol
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 It seems like a lot of people are missing this point, he's straight up killing it, and I keep seeing framing data brought up, if the league looked at that, there wouldn't even be this discussion, lol. Writers can't even get past avg and RBI, let alone considering something as nerdy as framing.
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Trout is a lock for AL. Unanimous for sure. For NL, got to go with Kershaw. He's having a better year than Verlander in '11. But, Stanton will get some votes.
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Lol I was just looking at the WAR leaderboards....and Phil Hughes has 5.6 WAR this season!?!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Writers can't even get past avg and RBI, let alone considering something as nerdy as framing. Yeah that's why I don't see Lucroy getting much MVP consideration unfortunately, unless he pads some of his HR and RBI numbers and the Brewers make the playoffs, which is something the writers will fap about!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Lol I was just looking at the WAR leaderboards....and Phil Hughes has 5.6 WAR this season!?! He's been really good this year. His K/BB ratio is absurd!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Well thats because he missed a few starts in April. I think this should be irrelevant. Kershaw is putting up historic numbers. I think he deserves the NL Cy Young - not the MVP. He'll be in discussion for the MVP, though like I said I'd rather someone like Stanton, McCutchen or Lucroy get it.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Jacob deGrom for NL Rookie of the Year?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Jacob deGrom for NL Rookie of the Year? Billy Hamilton also up there. Not sure if the casuals will appreciate the value he brings to the table, and deGrom has a shiny ERA.

Not sure if the casuals will appreciate the value he brings to the table, and deGrom has a shiny ERA. Yeah deGrom has been really solid this year. Hamilton has been extremely valuable. I'm sure if his overall numbers were better, the writers would definitely give him the nod, though an average in the .250s and an .OBP below .300 likely won't sit well with the writers.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Jacob deGrom for NL Rookie of the Year? I think you have to go with Hamilton for that. I'm just surprised you like McCutchen or Stanton over Kershaw for MVP. It's the same story every season as to what exactly an MVP really is, but Kershaw is doing something more historic than JV even though he has less innings and wins.

Stanton and McCutchen play everyday. Stanton played a huge role in keeping the Marlins in it until September despite them losing Jose Fernandez for the entire 2014 season; McCutchen would play a huge part in pushing the Pirates to the playoffs as well and plays CF; Lucroy has been one of the most valuable players this season and he plays one of the most demanding positions in baseball. Kershaw might not even make it to 200 innings this season. I know he's been having a historic season, though there is an award already for him to win.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 A must read for everyone: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22934 Should be mandatory. After reading this, there shouldn't be any "I don't buy it" or "I don't think it should be all the catcher". Both the catcher and pitcher's part is measurable. It's also one of the fastest stabilizing skills in baseball ever. ~5-10 games. You can check that yourself (I did too) Didn't read the whole thing yet. It seems like "clutch framing" is built in since you give more weight to framing with 2 strikes. But apparently there's no such thing as clutch hitting so should I read the rest?

The word "clutch" doesn't appear in that article once. Obviously you give more weight to framing with 2 strikes because it results in a strikeout, the best possible outcome for a pitcher. How is this hard to understand? For example, Navarro constantly botches 2 strike breaking pitches in the zone, which means the pitcher not only doesn't get the strike out, but he also has to throw more pitches and has an extra ball in the count.
