Maahfaace Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Most likely Buehrle gets traded. He's only got 1 year left and could be useful for other teams looking for a veteran starter who eats innings, preferably an NL team. and the jays would likely have to eat close to 10 million just to get a team to bite
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 AJ Jimenez is coming off injury. Jays don't want to take a risk on him. And they probably want to see if Kottaras can replace Thole as Dickey's personal catcher next season (unless Dickey is traded). If AJ was in the future plans at all he should be up. Being around big leaguers and getting to know the pitchers. September is like pre-spring training for catchers. Even if they aren't healthy enough to get into a game. AJ is on his way out I'm sure of it.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Hopefully we'll get a chance to see them play almost every day/get some starts/get a few innings in to see if they deserve a nice look in ST next year. It's about time this team had some prospects we can get excited about and can't wait to see. They could be cheaper options next year especially with the FAs to be. If they look like they can hold their own, then maybe the off season develops differently than if they stumble. Something to look forward to and see what happens this OS.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I rather see Delabar trying to correct his issues than see Jansenn get another relief appearance But that's just me Can't wait to.see Delabar go to the Rays this off season and have success

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 (edited) So, at risk of SSS over reaction, Pompey looks like he has the potential to be a more well rounded player than Gose (3 tool player who can't hit) and a higher ceiling than Pillar (who seems to have no above average tools at all) That said he likely starts 2015 in Buffalo, but has Pompey already passed Pillar on the depth chart? It's tough because the SSS doesn't just apply to the majors, but at every level of the minors since he never stayed at one level more than a couple of months. We have full seasons of minor league hitting info on Gose and Pillar. Pompey kept hitting at every level, with power, on his way up. And the eye test is favorable - more power than Pillar, better plate coverage than Gose (faint praise I suppose, is there anyone with worse plate coverage than Gose?). Still need to temper expectations but... I'm excited to see what he can do and am glad they didn't trade him. Edited September 26, 2014 by G-Snarls

I'd say that's probably right. Give Pompey a half a year in Buffalo and if he's doing well call him up. Gose is a good bench piece, and his defense if valuable but he just isn't as good of hitter as Pompey.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 i wrote this before the game yesterday, it seems more true then ever!!! Dalton Pompey should be the starting CF in 2015 out of spring training if the alternatives are Gose/Pillar. He already has more professional at bats and makes more solid hard contact. His defence is very close to Gose's level. Why delay the inevitable?? Gose and Pillar are AAAA players. Not first division regulars. Gose may be a bench player used for late inning defensive replacement etc. Comments???
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I'd have Pompey start the year in AAA and just go with a Pillar/Gose tandem or trade Gose and start Pompey. Having Gose come off the bench is a waste IMO. He's not a very good major league player but he's making 500K and should have lots of value to a team who needs a CF.

In 200 major league games over 3 seasons he owns a .233/.301/.330 slash line and nothing I see suggests to me he's going to hit any better than that. A .300 OBP for a speed guy with zero power just isn't very good. The defense is so good that I could live with that hitting if he doesn't face lefties but yes, I'd rather have a more well rounded player at such an important position. Pillar isn't particularily fast, nor a great defender, and he has very little power too. I think he's a good AAAA backup. But yeah I can see the OF for most of next year being Melky, Gose, Pompey, Bautista
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I suppose though - Pompey will have a month in the AFL and a month of spring training. He does have a real chance of impressing enough to win a job out of spring training. The only thing I don't want to see is AA letting Colby and Melky both walk and feel like he has enough outfielders without them. That would be very dangerous. I still want Melky retained.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I don't hate Gose as a reserve. That's not a waste IMO. That might actually be his ceiling. We always knew that at worst he could be a speed off the bench, defensive replacement guy. That's a good skill set for a backup CF/4th OF. It's certainly a lot more useful than Brett Wallace. The only issue with Gose is would he accept a reserve role? He's out of options so the Jays will have to find some kind of job for him. If he's not the starting CF than he will have to just deal with being a reserve or be dealt. Ideal scenario is that Pompey acts as a motivator for Gose and he finally stop underachieving and claims the starting CF that he should have already claimed by now. Even if Pompey is the more interesting player long term, the depth chart would look a lot better if Gose played like a Major League calibre starting CF. If nothing else, it would boost his trade value before the eventual commitment to Dalton. Gose has been underachieving for so long now that I'm not confident it will happen but it would be awesome if Gose took a lesson from Pompey.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Get a good LF, SS/2B and platoon Gose/Pillar until Pompey forces his way up.

Unless the Jays are going full rebuild, the rope needs to be really short on Gose/Pillar though. Every year, the Jays waste so many at bats on scrubs that it cancels out the good players.

I would prefer some kind of trade to acquire a centre fielder and have gose exclusively as a back up or ship him out in the trade if need be. It's unfair to say this would even be possible, but the thought of gose in centre doesn't do it for me.
baubau Verified Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 The biggest issue I have with Gose is he cannot bunt. Seriously if he could learn how to bunt properly he could get a lot of base hits. His skillet allows his biggest advantage is being on the bases and defense. I suspect the team will go with a Gose/Pillar combo early for the start of next year and call Pomey out in 20-25 games. I think Pompey has looked great. I mean, he took two walks in 1 game. TWO! I don't think I've seen Gose take two walks in one series. He is showing great plate discipline, switch hitting so we don't have to worry about platooning him and provides the ability to steal bases and play defense. I'd like to say he needs some more "seasoning" in the minors but at this point I don't think the team can afford that given their options.

Gose will at least provide defensive value but Pillar just doesn't bring a lot to the table and he has options anyways.

Every year, the Jays waste so many at bats on scrubs that it cancels out the good players. I agree on the short leash, but I certainly want Pompey to get more at bats at AAA, the same way I want Sanchez and Norris down there as well. Same applies to Graveman. I feel like Gose against RHP and Pillar against LHP can do a decent job. I also said get a good LF and SS/2B. If Pompey forces their hand, then all the better. If they can get a cheaper and better alternative in FA, then that's fine. I just think it's best to let Pompey, et al, to develop some more at AAA and let them force their way up, sort of like Stroman did. We'll see what happens.

What kind of impact would being able to bunt for a hit really have on Gose's offensive profile? http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2012/12/10/3748738/best-bunter-all-time-career-bunt-hits-bases-empty-mlb This is the all-time leaderboard for bunt hits in a season. The first column is the number of attempts and the second is the number of hits. The percentages are times reached based on a hit and times reached based on a hit or error. So if he's absolute elite at bunting for a hit, we're talking something like 20 hits over 40 attempts. It certainly would be nice for him to do that but I'm not convinced that's really the problem. If anything, I'd say the inablility to bunt hints at what might be an overall problem with coachability. He has a better approach at the plate already than both Gose/Pillar and he has high end defence abilities. What is potential negative effect on long term development?? 12:20 Kiley McDaniel: This is why you don't rush prospects. When they aren't ready, they learn bad habits (bad for their long-term goals) so they can stay up in the big leagues when they could learn things in the correct incremental way in the minors. What you have in the big leagues shouldn't impact that decision--there's crappy one-year fill-in veterans out there for situations like this.
