Justin Morneau? $7.5MM LH Bat, plays 1B, DH... good clubhouse guy.

That would be awesome. Send them Happ in a package to offset cost.

Not a fan of AA but lately I like his moves, He has done a great job in acquiring talent with character. I think he signed the perfect free agent/ team captain who can run a rotation and provide both great defence and offence from the catcher position

I was not a fan of Lind or Gose but I am biased, if the rumors are true about a crappy clubhouse, he cleaned that up in a hurry. I still believe Linds offence needs to be replaced and Morneau fits perfectly. I would love the lefty bat and he would allow EE to DH full time and spell Morneau off the odd time.

I honestly believe Pompey can replace Gose's production. But I would rather Pompey develop more in the minors. Saying that if we had a top 6 of Reyes, Martin, Donaldson, Bats, EE, Morneau, we can gamble with Pompey or Travis.

We are still a elite starter away. Yes we can fix a bullpen, grab another outfielder and hopefully upgrade second base but I believe we need a top line starter.

If you forget about contracts for a minute, and we should as Rogers pays the bills and has opened the wallets both Dickey and Buerle are quality and comparable 3 and 4 starters with Stroman developing into a quality 2. Leave Sanchez in the pen and blow a load on Miller to help Sanchez. But mainly we need to aggressively pursue the big 3 starters. AA is developing a better and more enticing environment and maybe he can pull another one out of his butt.

If the big three are to expensive or say no, try Martins old mate Liriano. He may not be ideal but may be better then what we have.

Any fans here in Cali that can brainwash Kendrick's. imagine plugging Kendrick's and Morneau into our lineup, both cheaper and affordable. Ya I am to hyper. Damn AA. Playing with my hopes to see another winner

I know this is nuts, but I was chatting with some Reds fans yesterday and they mentioned how they believe the Reds would be looking to unload Vottos salary so they can re-up Cueto and Latos. Apparently they wouldn't even be expecting much in return (because of the insanity of the contract).

But wouldn't Votto be an interesting option here? I think Rogers and attendence and viewership would increase big time with the addition of an MVP hometown boy. So much so that it could help offset the contract. Obviously it would be a massive risk, but adding Votto would give us a ridiculous midd of the order. I know he had a rough season last year, but he could very well bounce back and this could be an excellent buy low opportunity.

What would you give up for Votto? Considering the contract it might not take much.

I'd have no interest in Votto. He's on the decline and that contract is terrible...takes him to age 41.

He an outlier of a season BABIP wise. He could very well bounce back, and big power hitters tend to age better (see Big Papi).

As for the rest of the offseason, I'm fine rolling the dice on Pompey and Travis in CF and 2B respectively, with a backup plan obv, but I'd only be content with that if LF and 1B/DH is addressed.

- Highly doubt that the Reds give a s*** about locking up Mat Latos right now.

- Attendance and viewership wouldn't increase much more than it already inevitably will with Russell Martin coming to town (and he'll have a negligible effect). Winning is the only thing that increases attendance consistently. The hometown Canadian boys maple syrup angle is mostly BS.

- 5 year policy

- Semi-chronic leg issues on turf = no bueno

- Even elite .300/.400; 30/100 hitters tend to turn into goop in their mid 30's. Look at Mark Teixeira. Do you want that situation on a Joey Votto contract? Look at Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, even Adrian Gonzalez... almost all of the top 1B from 4-5 years ago are shells of their former selves at this point. Even Miggy is showing cracks with the bone spurs and stress fractures this past year.

99% sure Big Papi is still on PED's.

You don't think Votto would create a MASSIVE buzz? Martin's a nice player, but he doesn't have the appeal to the casual fans that a Votto would, that's pretty clear.

-The 5 year policy is only with FAs, no?

-He could shift to DH, he and Edwin could pretty much rotate between the DH/1B spots.

You would want to drop $200M+ to create a "buzz" with a guy that you'd already want to be cycling into the DH spot to save his legs, with 9 or 10 years still left on his mega-deal?

I love Votto, but he's forever unclean on that contract. No touchy.

Question, what would it cost to sign Jed Lowrie for 2-years? What would it cost to sign Melky for 4-years? What would it cost to sign Liriano for 3+ years?

if we backloaded their contracts, ala Martin (althought not as extreme) could we do it?

Another question, if we signed those guys, do we have a chance at at the playoffs?

Mark Rodgers, Andrew Miller's agent, says Miller is moving closer to a decision. Miller has at least 10 teams including Red Sox interested

I'd see Jed Lowrie getting $7-10 mill per season on a 2-3 year deal.

id rather sign drew and i feel he would get paid less. better defender and higher ceiling on his bat IMO.

lowrie also hits lefties better than righties, which would kind of compound the big flaw we have in our lineup

If the Reds gave a discount on Joey Votto then yea I would absolutely have to think about it. No way I give up a lot of value for that contract though.

He would be a dream come true for the first few seasons but could become a nightmare by the end of that contract. If AA is willing to go much more all in that 2012 offeason than I would be down.

1st/DH ? Wtf we already have that covered with EE, Smoak,Mayberry and Navarro as it stands! Lol

If your looking to boost canadian content look to Justin Morneau first! :)

Main needs fore the club now... Front of the rotation SP, LF, and pen help. I think between Izturis, Travis and Goins, the Jays really aren't focusing on 2b right now.

Starter helps the pen, pen then Lf maybe! But second and LF are ok if we have to roll with what we got too!

Yes, but the back end of the pen is still questionable. Who are they going to use as their main guys? Cecil and Loup are really the only consistent relievers from last year. Delabar was all over the map, Jenkins and Redmond are long men, Rasmussen was nothing special, who knows what Drabek would do... after that, your names are Hynes, Hendriks, Burns, Estrada, Schultz, Tepera and Sanchez, though having him out of the pen again would probably be a waste.

There's really no standout strikeout guys in that list and that's what this pen is in dire need of.

I think Sanchez might just be the closer, because if they aren't willig to go out and spend money, then obviously AA will want internal options. So now that gives out what appears to be atleast 2 late inning relievers. I can also see the possibility of Casey Jansenn coming back. I dont think there is much of a market for Casey. Then he can close again, with Sanchez acting as setup man.

I completely agree that acquiring a frontline starter should ultimately be the main priority. The current rotation is probably strong enough to get the team into the playoffs, but the lack of front-line starters (besides possibly Stroman) will put the team at a major disadvantage in a short series. I wouldn't be completely upset however if they went into the season with status quo and made a strong push for an elite starter once some teams are out of the race. I think acquiring a LF with some pop from the left side and a more versatile version of Izturis who can actually play a passable SS (in case of a Reyes injury) is probably a more urgent need though.

I am onboard with signing Rasmus to play LF for 1-year. I am sure his agent would recommend he only sign a 1-year deal to rebuild his value.

Does anyone think we could sign Nelson Cruz to a 3-year deal, throw him in LF and part time DH? Would a 3-year, $38M deal get him? Cheaper than Melky, slightly better in LF, older so maybe cheaper? Just wondering what you all think of that...

Can't see AA bringing Sanchez up to close until at least the all star break, even then he would need to be blowing it as a starter in the minors.

Won't be cheaper and Melky is the better fit over Cruz anyway. Rasmus is a decent option but doesn't fix the issue just gives more options
