Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I am not a big David Price fan but I will give him that one.
Blitz Verified Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Molina's been released by the Rays. Excellent defender and pitch-framer. Trade Navarro and Thole and sign Molina to be backup catcher plus Dickey's personal caddy? Huh, that's handy... We just happen to have a guy available who could catch 120+ for TB... I'd love to get Sean Rodriguez in Toronto just so we don't have to play against the lil SOB.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I don't know if this was already posted or not (so sorry if it was), but thought it was interesting. The Martin signing had an added benefit for the Blue Jays; it caught the attention of a few pitchers who have reached out to Anthopoulos since the deal was announced. http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/lots-of-work-remains-for-blue-jays-anthopoulos/
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 That is pretty interesting. Martin was a great sign.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Price is total class. I remember the game when Bautista hit his second home run of the game off him. Price just admired it, grinned, and shook his head, with a 'how the heck did he hit that pitch' kind of expression.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Liriano? Thinking the exact same thing i would love that sign.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Thinking the exact same thing i would love that sign. I wouldn't. QO attached and isn't a enough of an upgrade over the SP currently.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 It'd be our 2nd rounder though, and we'd be able to offer the most currently (other than Pirates) due to the pick attachment. Well depending on what happens with Melky.. What do you think is a realistic contract? I don't think he is worth more than Happ to justify the signing.
Smokey Verified Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I wouldn't. QO attached and isn't a enough of an upgrade over the SP currently. The attached pick should actually be a benefit to the Jays since they've already lost their top pick and would be competing with fewer teams. Having said that, I don't trust Liriano much and personally prefer a groundball pitcher like Masterson.

AA said in an interview they wouldn't part with a 1st round pick if they sign players to a 1 or 2 year deal and I wouldn't give him more than that myself.

Liriano's a massive upgrade on Happ. Yet, I don't see the Birds making this type of move anyhow, LF and 2B should be priority. Drew/Lowrie and Aoki thanks...

Masterson isn't attacked to a pick as far as I know and the first round pick is already gone.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I want Liriano's Slider in Jays uniform
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 For all those that complained about the Jays not caring about pitch framing you should read this. They tried to make Navarro and Thole much better at it last year. http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/jays-martin-goes-with-the-pitch-to-get-strikes/ “On our frame readings, when a guy has a good rating, usually the pitcher has pretty good control because he’s going to get those borderline pitches more often,” explains Butera. “Like Mark Buehrle. When (Dioner Navarro) catches Buehrle, his rating is usually between plus-3 and plus-6.” Navarro lost 109.7 strikes last year, 99th in the big-leagues, according to Baseball Prospectus, but the Blue Jays have their own proprietary system to evaluate pitch framing. One thing they found with Navarro was that his ratio improved dramatically when catching balls down on one knee, something he did more often over the season’s final two months when no one was on base. Being on one knee allowed Navarro to push his glove out further and provide the umpire with a better view of the ball. Butera also worked with both Navarro and Josh Thole on catching the ball into the centre part of their bodies, regularly running pre-game drills to help in that regard. Now, rather than looking for gains, the Blue Jays will simply need to keep Martin in tune.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Liriano? Yep that was my thought when I read that quote. If the Jays keep Dickey and add Liriano, that's a pretty solid 5 man unit., although don't really know what you're going to get with Liriano most years.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 FFS, why didn't they just use Kratz? They did use Kratz. Significantly. You can only have three catchers on the roster for so long. I don't know why people constantly rage about Kratz when they know about the whole Dickey/Thole ********. You guys aren't working in the front office, you guys hardly ever take the business side of the game into account. Keeping your employees happy, especially ones that cost you d'Arnaud and Syndergaard and are considered one of the biggest wild cards in the game, yeah.. that's a thing.

So in other words: "Since we originally got bent over on the Dickey deal, it only makes sense to maintain the position and satisfy our mediocre pitcher's demands."

Yes. It might be hard to look at the bigger picture for idiots like you, but maintaining a good image, maintaining a better clubhouse atmosphere, and making decisions that keep ownership and your players happy are all factors that the front office actually has to take into account. This atrocious Toronto media already loves to turn every pellet of s*** into a s*** storm, and this idiotic new narrative about Dickey being a "clubhouse cancer" (just because he keeps to himself) is a great example of that. If Dickey winds up unhappy with the guy catching him and says something about it, or even wears his dreary "depressed-old-man" expression on his stupid mug long enough, the media would have a field day with it. You make compromises with the clubhouse when you're getting Yunel Escobar from the Braves for nothing in return. You don't deal with all of that garbage for Erik Kratz.

You make compromises with the clubhouse when you're getting Yunel Escobar from the Braves for nothing in return. You don't deal with all of that garbage for Erik Kratz. There you go again with your emotionally fueled tirades painting the FO as the victims of an "atrocious media". If it wasn't bad enough to come across as a leaking vagina every time you get mad, you also happen to continually contradict yourself. You originally emphasize the importance of keeping your "wild card" happy since he cost you d'Arnaud and Syndergaard but in your next post you preach about making compromises for players who cost you "nothing in return". Basically pulling anything you can from your ass to rationalize your bias outlook towards the organization. Then, you actually give yourself the nerve to bring up the "bigger picture" (which you describe as "maintaining a good image" and "maintaining a better clubhouse atmosphere") which is quite frankly laughable. I thought the bigger picture or the main objective was to win games, make the playoffs and win a championship???? But no, apparently "image" is what it's all about... Although unfortunately, we can't even achieve that since according to you "many ball players are just generally really dumb people" and just don't want come here since the media "warps" their perceptions". Oh did I also forget to mention that despite all these efforts, the manager doesn't even think that this is a tightly-knitted group and expects some changes?? So much for the bigger picture. As mentioned before, your argument doesn't have a leg to stand on, but please don't let that get in the way of a good estrogen induced rage... This place wouldn't be the same without them. ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Surprised Andy Burns was not added to the roster. I think he's gone.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 I'd be willing to look at Swisher if the Indians ate up half of his contract. He has put up some big numbers before, with high on base percentages. But the Indians need to eat up at least half of the $30M, and we would trade a very low end asset in return.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Very very rare for a position player to stick on an MLB team for a full year. Yeah, I know still risky, I guess saving arms are a priority.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Very very rare for a position player to stick on an MLB team for a full year. Tarasenko scored "AGAIN" by the way, steal of the draft.
