Tepera?

WTF

Ryan Tepera (2013 Rule 5 eligible)

Aug 1, 2013 could go down as the most important date in Ryan Tepera’s career, well, outside of the day he was drafted into professional baseball.

That was the day that he permanently moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen in Double-A New Hampshire. A former 19th round draft pick back in 2009, the right-hander out of Sam Houston University spent the majority of his first five pro seasons as a little-known, innings-eating sinker/slider starter. Tepera, who recently turned 26, was always good enough to keep a job and to keep moving forward through the minors but was never quite good enough to get mentioned as a key prospects in the Jays system.

As a starter, his fastball ranged from 88-94 mph and mostly sat around 91 mph but he was more of a pitch-to-contact guy so velocity was less of an issue. Moved to the ‘pen, his fastball continued to show good movement but his velocity spiked and sat in the 94-96 mph range. As a reliever, batters hit .200 — albeit in a small-sample size — compared to .255 as a starter. In total, over 13 relief appearances in the second half of 2013, Tepera pitched 16.1 innings and allowed 12 hits with seven walks. He struck out 19 batters.

The Texas native is not a huge guy, standing 6-1, but he does a nice job of staying on top of his heater and his slider shows a lot of potential when he can throw it for strikes. His changeup isn’t a big pitch for him but it could help him combat tough left handed hitters. Tepera allowed 34 walks and five homer runs to left-handed batters in a combined 46 innings pitched in 2013, compared to 22 walks and six home runs in 70 innings versus right-handed hitters.

I do have some minor concerns with Tepera’s delivery because he remains quite upright with little follow through, which puts some additional strain on his shoulder. However, he was a shortstop in high school and didn’t pitch regularly until college so he has a fairly fresh arm. There’s some effort in his delivery but it’s hard to regular throw in the mid 90s without it.

Tepera ranked as my No. 1 Rule 5 eligible player prior to last December’s draft. The right-hander spent the majority of his minor league career as an indistinguishable org arm before moving from the starting rotation to the bullpen last year.

The result of that move was a significant bump to his fastball velocity (into the mid 90s) and a sharper breaking pitching. When I saw the right-hander pitch in early April, he was struggling to command the ball in the cold weather and his control took a huge hit with 10 walks in 13.0 April innings. In May, he issued just three free passes in 12.1 innings while seeing his strikes for the month jump from 12 to 22.

Currently leading the American League East division in the standings, Toronto could be active on the trade market over the summer months and I continue to suggest that Tepera is a player worth acquiring; with three option years remaining he can offer a big league club a lot of flexibility to go along with a near-MLB-ready arm with the ceiling of a set-up man.

Well I hope theres more lol.... Odd to announce only one, but we'll have to wait and see I guess.

Yeah I guess the only reason would be, they have to announce a DFA to add anyone else.

Tepera was a starter too. Converted to a reliever full time just this season. If the reports on the velocity spike are true, I don't see why anyone would be upset with this. Worst case scenario he'll be DFA'd sometime next season.. No risk, high reward.

Because the deal wasn't good enough.

Marlins, Giancarlo Stanton Agree To 13-Year, $325MM Contract

THURSDAY: The deal also includes $1MM annually in assorted award-related performance bonuses, tweets Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs.

Just hope that isn't the only one to be added.

So we have lost or will loose> Lind's 321-6-40 Navarro's 274-12-69 Caberra's 301-16-73 and Rasmus's 225-18-40. Can somebody explain how we replace all of this? Russ is a start but he only replaces Navaros plate numbers. Am i looking at all of this wrong? LoL

still a lot of work to be done, vs lefties I'm sure one of valencia/mayberry can get some good production in the DH spot. as for left field a dirks/pillar platoon can make up for melky's offense with solid D but i'd be shocked if that was the plan come opening day. just gotta wait and see

Ryan Tepera, RHP: A 27-year-old with a plus fastball, that sinks and cuts Tepera struck out a batter per inning at Triple-A Buffalo this year but had issues with command, walking 3.4 per nine out of the bullpen. He also offers a high-80s slider, but the pitch is below-average.

sounds like crap tbh. Neil Wagner with s*** command.

The most simplistic way to explain this would be through WAR I believe. Depending on who you ask, Martin alone is a 5-7 win upgrade on Navarro. Without doing any research, I'd expect that his upgrade alone covers the loss of any of the players you mentioned. The pitchers on the staff should* benefit from Martin behind the plate, to what degree I'm not qualified to answer.

In short, if AA can make a couple more savvy additions (Aoki, Saunders, Headley, whoever) and he will have not only replaced the production from those players, but made the major league team better on paper.
