leaffie Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 according to XM radio, John Henry invested heavily in a report about how much production the team gets from pitchers over 30 years of age. He will NOT give any pitcher a contract longer than four years if they are over 30. They report that the Sox never made another offer, after the original one. Lester is said to be very angry, although saying all the right things. Kennedy said that Lester will never go back to the sox.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 And I used to think you were one of the more quality posters around here. LOL. No regrets. Your whinning can get really over the top.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Remember when some 'posters' here wanted Hammel. Check out his stats with Oakland since the trade. And that's in a pitchers park. In the AL East he'd be done.
fireballW Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 What's worse than one thread for all trade deadline deals? A bunch of crybabies ruining that one thread with constant bitching and moaning that they can't get their own thread. You voice your concern and displeasure ... once ... and then move on. You don't ask daddy for a thread, and when he says no, ask him over and over and over and over again, telling him he's the meanest, dumbest daddy ever for not letting you have one. And you don't tell him that when you ask mommy (or any other parent in the history of the world and parents), she'll let you have one. What's worse than people bitchin about the one thread? People writing huge posts bitchin about the people bitching about the one thread.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I'm going to suggest a trade deadline thread for deadline rumours (not involving the Jays...which would be this thread) and one for actual trades. I think that is fair.

Their announcers were talking about how they (Red Sox) didn't like handing out long contracts 4-5 years or more, to pitchers once they've hit 30 since most start to slow down, breakdown, tailspin or are high price replacement level pitchers. Each case can be unique since some guys pitched well into their late 30s some into their early 40s though rare. I'm sure someone will give him a contract longer than the Sox would like to but their main concern is if they sign him 5-6 years they might get 2-3 good seasons and then the next 1-3 (depending on length of the deal) might either be hurt, lackluster, replacement level etc. I think Lester would be a decent bet to be a decent pitcher at 35 and maybe a couple years after but I don't see him being a top of the rotation guy then so I can understand them not wanting to pay him for it.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 lol if they'd talk about trades and what's happening today instead of filling the thread with their whining it would be fine. It has nothing to do with how cluttered this thread is. Not only is it convenient for people posting on the forum already, events like the trade deadline and winter meetings are excellent opportunities to gain new forum members with the massive amounts of increased online traffic during those times. Search engine bots that fly through forums picking up search data look primarily at forum tags (which nobody here uses, for some reason) and thread titles. Shoving blockbuster trades into thick threads focused on minor moves will give the board no chance in appearing in searches about the Lester trade. If you can have five page threads about North destroying another thread, we can have threads to discuss huge trades that might actually help out the forum.... Remember when some 'posters' here wanted Hammel. Check out his stats with Oakland since the trade. The people who wanted Hammel are probably the same people who wanted Ubaldo.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Part of me is expecting Rasmus traded today. Another part of me thinks this is AA and we'll probably trade Norris, Sanchez, Pompey and Nay for Hammels from Oakland.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Then the ignore button is your friend. Enjoy. I actully enjoy you as a poster for the most part so I won't do that. You help generate debate but you tend to jump into an argument all guns blazing and indignant. With a posting style like that you should expect some gentle (and not so gentle) ribbing.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I've always understood this consolidated thread to be about rumors. And then when things are official, we can have a dedicated thread to them. As long as they are significant players and not scrubs.

Another part of me thinks this is AA and we'll probably trade Norris, Sanchez, Pompey and Nay for Hammels from Oakland. That's what I'm afraid of; AA trading some prospects for mediocre, non improvements or rentals that they really don't stand a chance at resigning due to pressure/desperation to give the team a much needed shot in the arm to push into the playoffs. Then again I can see them standing pat again unless something comes up. I could see Rasmus being dealt but I think AA might be in the get guys who are ready now or will be by next year mode. I could be wrong. I'm not expecting anything, maybe a small deal ie spare parts for spare parts, but we have a few hours left.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 @Ken_Rosenthal: Source: #Athletics trade Milone to #Twins. @jonmorosi: Fuld goes to Oakland in Milone deal. @Ken_Rosenthal: #Twins calling up 1B/DH Kenny Vargas. Could be related to trade.

Governator Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Omg do something AA!!! Anything!!! A trade for the sake of a trade is stupid.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I hope AA is in ninja mode and working on something. I dont' want a deal for the sake of a deal but it's annoying seeing these other teams make some kind of improvements while we do minor things if that. Easier said than done I know.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Our biggest trade should only involve Nolin....anything more than that will be a crippling overpay
leaffie Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Lots of reports say lots of things. Yes, it's known that the Sox are very hesitant to hand out longer-term deals (snake-bitten by recent deals, plus a valuation model which warns against it). And, yes, Henry and Lucchino have talked about it, and also mentioned that it's not a concrete prohibition against long-term deals ... it's a case-by-case. Perhaps they have ruled out 5 year (and beyond) deals for SPs, but more likely, they have a valuation process which would typically not recommend such a contract, but they can make an exception where they deem appropriate. Lester may or may not be that case. IMO Lester has been treated shabbily by the Sox. I guess if there is a health concern, it will come out sooner or later. But the offer they made one of the best pitchers in the AL, was insulting. Why would he go back there?
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Milone for Fuld!? What in the david de jesus.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I'm really hoping that Valencia isn't our big move as he was sort of an irrelevant pick up with Tolleson on the team. I know that Valencia has the longer track record of hitting lefties well, but if you're looking at it for this season Tolleson has done an admirable job and is substantially more versatile. What the hell is our bench going to be when Lind EE and Lawrie are back? Gose, Reimold, Valencia, Thole? Kawasaki, Reimold, Valencia, Thole?
