Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 A starting pitcher is our best bet. We could then move hutch to pen and he would be solid 1 inning at a time, so a starter would improve the team in two ways. Next year hutch can start again. Him and dirty Sanchez could be huge additions to the pen for this year. Maybe drabek as well. That's not a bad idea as it would be a good way to limit Hutch's innings. Other than 2011 he's never even come close to approaching 150 IP.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Happ - 0.9 fWAR Ubaldo - 0.4 fWAR Santana - 2.0 fWAR Garza - 2.0 fWAR You should probably stop using bWAR You're probably. I never know whose WAR to trust. I look at both at various times. Though also I'm less sure about how valid WAR is for pitchers (and possibly catchers) is too. For most position players I've bought in to it fully, but for pitchers I'm just less sure it really reflects their full value. IYKWIM. Even if pitcher fWAR is gospel, the point is still valid - 1 win or less between Happ and those other guys. caveat: SO FAR THIS SEASON. Cause I'd still rather have Santana than Happ for the rest of the year at this point.

jays76 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Btw- Jorge De La Rosa has gone 5-0 in his last 5 starts and the rest of the rotation has gone 2-22. He's put up pretty decent numbers at Coors field so I think he'd be able to transition nicely to the Rogers Center (Also he was lights out here last yr). The O's were pushing hard for him but talks have cooled down, that would be a coup for AA to snag the Rockies ace from under their noses. I think Hutch and a couple prospects gets it done..

Candide Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 i'd be fine with going for it - in terms of see whatever the heck you can get to make a run this season without giving up Sanchez, Stroman, any core MLB-roster player, Osuna, and Norris. everyone else on the farm, i'd give up for the right offer. this probably equates to a half-assed attempt at #2 and ending up pursuing #1.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Hutch's value is at his lowest and something is wrong with him. You can't be this bad unless you are injured or something is wrong with you mentally.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 is there anyone left that is really like McCarthy? The only ones I can think of are on the team we are facing right now. I'm not sure who is available and who is not. I'm sure there's a lot of teams that don't know themselves what they should be doing, so it probably affects what deals are going to happen.
jays76 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 What? Hutch is cheaper and as good. Stop it. Bad stretch or not I think JDL is seriously underrated and especially playing in Coors field. The guy has some really good stuff! Hutch may or may not turn out to be on his level one day but he's definitely not there yet. Could you see Hutch being an ace at Coors field for a number of years?

Gives some teams false hope and more teams are going to tinker/stand pat.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Would anyone trade Drew Hutchison and Ricky Romero for Jake Peavy. No. Hutch should be a big part of this rotation for the next several years. We can live with Romero's contract for one more year.

You can't be this bad unless you are injured or something is wrong with you mentally. It may not be either; I'm wondering if he's a bit fatigued and it's affecting his ability to repeat his delivery. He was very sharp in the first inning against Boston, then, not so much. There was some mention on the Blair show about tipping pitches, but I haven't heard much follow-up on that.
jays76 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I was with you until you said "Hutch and a couple of prospects." You wouldn't do Hutch, Nolin, Pompey?
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Don't move stro, hutch, sanchez or Norris. If that means staying pat, then stay pat. Having the option to gut & rebuild around a young MLB ready core (including Lawrie) is just too appealing. I don't feel that this year's team, with upgrades are WS contenders but I'd still enjoy seeing meaningful games played in September then 2015 try outs which I think this current roster can provide.

Hutch doesn't look injured to me at all. If anything he is probably tired. He just came off of TJS and missed an entire season as a young SP. He is probably close to where his limit should be right now anyways. I really think AA should just shut him down for a few weeks and bring him back mid to late August if this team is still in the mix. If not then keep him shut down until next season. Someone like Esmil Rogers could spot start for a few weeks and he could be skipped on off days.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 You wouldn't do Hutch, Nolin, Pompey? What? For Jorge f***ing de la rosa? That guy? Wtf...
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Once the regulars come back our lineup vs LHP will actually be pretty good with Rasmus being the only below avg hitter. I think you need a SP but if the price is too high, don't pull the trigger and pray you can get something out of Morrow. I would not trade anything of value for a RP as that is probably the last need I would address. If hutch is moved to the pen it might help also you hope Delabar or Santos could come back and give you something.

I agree and when I heard AA talk after that game, he said we haven't had any dialogue about limiting Hutch. In a nutshell he said we feel he's not going to exceed 180 innings anyway so why put a limit # on him. I was like what??... He's already exhausted.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 You wouldn't do Hutch, Nolin, Pompey? I probably would only give up that package for Price out of all the starters on the market. Wouldn't even give that up for Lester.

In an ideal scenario, I'd probably let him go one or two starts more and then call it a season. Unfortunately for the Jays, they really need him in a contending season and I'm fearful they will do something really dumb here.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Let Sanchez start in place of Hutch for a game or two and see if it helps Hutch to have a long rest

AA didn't say anything except that he's making his next start But my gut says 2-3 more bad starts and it's to the DL or Buffalo with him Come on Hutch, turn it around... we need you!

Yes that would really suck, if they pull a Romero and let him struggle all year, his confidence going forward will be shot. I don't mind the idea that others have of maybe moving him to the pen or platooning him with someone, maybe Redmond.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 AA didn't say anything but he's making his next start But my gut says 2-3 more bad starts and it's to the DL or Buffalo with him Which is why it makes sense that the team has apparently shifted gears and are focusing on SP now. Given the fact that EE could be back in a week or so and Lawrie in a couple, I think that might be the smart move. With Reimold now in the mix as well, I'm comfortable with where this lineup could be by mid August.

He may not be anything special, but he could still be a solid option for the back end. At this point I'd give Rogers a shot.

The only obvious hole is 2nd and Muni has done more than enough to be good 9 hole hitter. See if you can pick up a cheap pitcher keeping Hutch, Sanchez, Norris, and Stro intact and our rotation should be solidified for this season with huge potential in the future.
