GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Then you would be better off cheering for a non AL East team. Jays will never have that so get over it. Your only choices are a possible playoffs this year or ten more years of .500 baseball I'll take either.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 It's a moot point. I'm sure AA would never trade young assets for an NL ace in his late 30's. http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/000/783/443/d1b.gif

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 That's the truth and was also the case for this past off season The only wrong thing to do this off season was to do "little-to-nothing" which was exactly what they did Need to go for it, or pack up go home and try again in a few years. No sense half-assing it. Total agreement with this. Half pregnant gets us nowhere.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 The casual fans know two things...what the mainstream media tell them and "former Cy Young award winner. Not to mention $25M a season, even my Mom who only watches the Jays and the only non Jays she knows are Papi (who she thinks that's his real name), Jeter, A-Rod and a smattering of a former Jays, she'd know that's superstar money. Spending = buzz IMO. So the Jays FO is doing what Ricciardi did during his spending spree, except the FO now is targeting guys who are on the verge of retirement. Sweet

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I"m not sure why everyone is so certain this is the only year that the AL East will be weak. Not sure. Just have seen enough player development and/or seemingly unlimited payroll spend for adding FA talent in our competition evidence for a sustained period to feel that way. Also feel the rash of injuries to, for example NYY SP, is an anomaly.

Spending = buzz IMO. I'm surprised you have a problem with this FO. You sound like you'd get along great with Beeston and his track team built to sell entertainment. Spending $25M is not worth the marginal hike in ticket sales you'd get from a few of the morons that read Wilner's tweets. And if you're trying to attract fans that have an iota of sense, then like I already said, there are countless trades you can make that actually help the team in a real way, don't mortgage the future payroll, and win you more ball games.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Abort or deliver prematurely? Ha! Still undecided. I don't think its an either or to go abort or try to deliver prematurely. The triage in our line up in addition to existing holes has given me doubt. The next couple weeks are telling and some big decisions to make before the deadline. I respect both views I've read on selling/building and going for it.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 The only trades the jays should make are taking on salary at this point, no more giving up prospects. Not after the s*** show month we just watched. Maybe if they were playing like Oakland you start to consider unloading the farm, but to do it now after a 2-8 crucial road trip, and over a month of futility would be a horrid decision. Now we just have to wait for lawrie, EE, and Lind to come back. I believe if they come back and we avoid other injuries we can have another 20 win month.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 So the Jays FO is doing what Ricciardi did during his spending spree, except the FO now is targeting guys who are on the verge of retirement. Sweet I'm not saying I know what they are doing, I just believe they don't know what they are doing. Right or wrong there are very, very, very few front offices that would do the moves you are suggesting (trading Bautista and EE as early as this off season) after increasing spending the way the Jays did. The Rays could put out an entire team of Mike Trout's and they still aren't going to sell out. Which is what allows them to make the moves they make.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Jays need a long term SS. Angel Rojas. He's our shortstop of the future.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Imagine where Orioles would be if they didn't have a shocking above character MVP year The Orioles have a good team. It's not shocking they are in first.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Jays need a long term SS. Tulo is available. Land a pitcher, like Lee or Hamels. Profit.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I'm surprised you have a problem with this FO. You sound like you'd get along great with Beeston and his track team built to sell entertainment. Spending $25M is not worth the marginal hike in ticket sales you'd get from a few of the morons that read Wilner's tweets. I've always said that I'd make a horrible GM as I couldn't give a s*** what the team is worth (I can understand bottom line costs and profits but Valuation would mean s*** to me), but that's very real. The Jays had a disaster season last year on the field and their valuation went up $42M...despite an operating income loss. So it's not just ticket sales that they get. Believe me this is stuff I can't stand in baseball (The Phillies are evaluated $250M higher than they were in 2012 despite a front office ruining the product on the field). And if you're trying to attract fans that have an iota of sense, then like I already said, there are countless trades you can make that actually help the team in a real way, don't mortgage the future payroll, and win you more ball games. I agree that there are trades that help the Jays without a high cost. I just don't know if this front office can find them or are looking in that direction.

I agree, once they made the two trades and increased spending that FO would never trade Bautista or Edwin. But the difference between me and many others is, I'm willing to acknowledge a mistake early on and change direction. So many people are on here saying we're already waste deep in this pile of s***, but let's keep going until this thing blows up. I don't understand why a move like the Rays made in the Shields deal where they got back an absolute haul with an almost immediate impact with Myers and then the other pieces in Odorizzi, providing now couldn't be looked at? IMO a move like that could be made where the team essentially loses very little right off the hop and has other solid pieces coming very soon. Intelligent moves can be made without further burying the team.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I still think addition by subtraction giving us payroll flexibility for the off season is the way to go! Seattle Ring Ring and Hello! To Seattle: Jose Bautista, R.a Dickey, Josh Thole, Jaun Francisco, Casey Janssen To Jays : Taijaun walker, Nick Franklin,Ketel Marte and Stefen Romero + PTBNL If they need nudging offer to pay half of the players salary going their way this year. Still need more offer Rasmus throw in loup and money up front pay the whole shot only if instead now PTBNL now becomes ackley and pike upfront and deal is done! This is my Final offer! Lol Who says No and why?

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 23% below average hitter with 0 power isn't very good. LOL yeah I just dug deeper in the stats and retracted my statement. Looks like he's getting a lot of BABip lucky singles Even his D isn't providing much value it seems.

Lol Who says No and why? Jays say no...partially for the reasons I mentioned earlier. Also because it's not nearly enough. The Jays giving up about $15M in salary this year (for players that project to still put up 3.5 fWAR) and only a savings of $26M next year. And would still have a team full of holes. Marte and Romero are not impact bats at all. At least ask for Zunino in the deal.

IMO a move like that could be made where the team essentially loses very little right off the hop and has other solid pieces coming very soon. Intelligent moves can be made without further burying the team. It's because they have a great GM and they are a very well run team on the field. They also lock up young players at the right time and for the right price. Look what they just did with Archer. Imagine if they had a 130m payroll? They know how to retool fast, and sell their players at the right time, most of the time not by choice. However, they make smart and sensible trades allowing them to accumulate great prospects/young players. Unfortunately, they most likely will never have the Yanks/Sox/BJ payroll to make even more moves, so they are handicapped in that respect. Now, if the Jays/Rays could just swap their entire front offices, the Jays might actually have a chance at winning something.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Lol, you've gotten really angry since last year. I have no idea how you perceived that through an angry tone. I don't get angry over baseball.

Before zunino would not Tyler or Paxton be better returns for us long term? And with 26 mil in the bank we should be able to plug or fill in the outfield holes ! We have back cathers coming in house in the next couple years.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Angel Rojas kid can hit like a motherf***er Who's that ? And really king what's going on with Kal? Why so little playing time? Is he injuried? Fallen out of favor? Wuz up? Why?

Old, expensive, coming back from an elbow strain....Yuck! Just go get Franklin, and pray these guys get back shortly. It just boggles the mind why such a good fit isn't here already
