NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 If he is hurt they continue to go with Tolleson against lefties and Francisco against righties (with Lawrie moving between 2B and 3B), that's decent depth. I would rather they added a guy like Zobrist, Utley, Beltre, or Tulo but it's just not likely to happen. I don't know if I would prefer one of those guys. Better to give up nothing to get Headley and have a whole offseason to find a long-term RF/3B/2B solution than to pay through the nose right now for an aging star IMO.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 What about Sean Rodriguez instead? Might cost even less to acquire. An upgrade but not very sexy but at least he's an MLB'er! Might be better off going with a platoon instead of Rodriguez though.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 What about Sean Rodriguez instead? Might cost even less to acquire. It's not going to be easy to pull guys like Sean Rodriguez away from the Rays now that they've set themselves up so that two good weeks of baseball separate them from contention. I said it all along, not to discount the Rays, that team is always in it and is always a threat, and they've started showing it yet again.

He'd be like a 1 win upgrade ROS if you plug him in at 2B. That's pretty valuable. To do that for very little acquisition cost seems pretty valuable to me. Do that and spend some real assets on an arm and I think the team is in alot better shape.

I've always wanted him so there is some bias there. That being said COL needs pitching, the Jays have pitching. I wonder if Norris + Sanchez + Barreto would at least get the conversation started. Grab Headley for Pillar + and a decent pitcher like EJax and ya I know it's not going to happen

Ya, I'd agree and you're right that the cost should be similar. I think the most important point here is that the Jays need a solution for 2B and pitching. Adding one without the other wouldn't get them very far ahead IMO.

The last few weeks the pitching has been great. Sad part, we are 1 injury away from free falling with our pitching.

SeanRod + Burnett/Kennedy would give us a valuable bump and I think both could be aquired without giving up any of Norris, Pompey or Sanchez.
Nox Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Can someone please explain to me why everyone has a hard on for an extreme fly ball pitcher having a great year in mostly pitching friendly parks in Ian Kennedy? Saying he's better than effing JA Happ does not equate to thinking he's a world beater.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Not sure if this guy has any credibility, but: Also, lol:

CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Is this a joke? They're giving 40 man roster spots to Drabek, Korecky, McGuire, Rasmussen, Wagner, Francisco, Goins, Izturis, Thole, Kawasaki, Tolleson, Gillespie, Mastro and Pillar. I'd take Headley performing to his current level over all of those guys fairly easily. Like would any one really care if they never saw Scott Tolleson play again? My concern isn't so much that we grab Headley and he gets hurt, but more so that he's terrible but the team feels compelled to keep him on the 25 because of his "track record". I get the concept of improving your team where you can, but I'm not sure Headley is worth the time and assets his acquisition would require.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 People don't make their toast in the tub? You guys are missing out.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 @Moogtard, I just got a quote notification from you, but seeing as I put you back on my ignore list, I don't want to go to the effort of taking you back off just to read your post, so enjoy getting the last word in. I'm sure that means a great deal to you.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 The last few weeks the pitching has been great. Sad part, we are 1 injury away from free falling with our pitching. Buehrle has been amazing. He's the glue that has held the rotation together. I do think the more immediate need would be an IF'er but a top of the rotation pitcher is a close second, especially if they are going to the one game play-in.

I get the concept of improving your team where you can, but I'm not sure Headley is worth the time and assets his acquisition would require. The team should keep him on the roster. It will be the fans that start raging their heads off that he's terrible with the bat, but the team should continue to play him for his defense. He's basically in the same boat as Anthony Gose this year, with slightly more power and slightly fewer walks. Both guys have defense that is more than good enough to justify their sports on the roster, but weak enough bats to piss off all the reactionary Jays fans and get an undeserved demotion. The fact that Glenn, Mastroianni and Encarnacion all got reps in the outfield over Gose is a f***ing travesty.

I'd be down for keeping those guys if the plan is to add in FA in the off-season. Otherwise ignore the value conscious rental and add the piece or two you need to be a legit contender.

You would think they'd move him to the DL if he struggled though. Allows the Jays to play the better option and Headley saves face going int o FA.

Getting a team to vastly over value a Sanchez based package is probably the optimal course of action.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Colorado has other offensive players that might come cheaper then Tulo and would help our club a fair bit. I'd love to add an OF'er or Arenado from them as well.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Getting a team to vastly over value a Sanchez based package is probably the optimal course of action. Cough, Tulo cough. To be honest though Sanchez + Norris and Pompey all line up perfectly with COL's 2-3 development plan. I imagine a potential rotation with all of Gray, Sanchez, Norris, and Butler might be enough to get O'Dowd's jimmies rustled.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 You're going to have to produce the actual thread in which this was allegedly said, as I trust your interpretations as much as I trust your ability to keep a toaster out of a tub. I tried looking back and found where I defended the KC Vargas signing when everyone poo-poo'ed it, and the Navarro signing thread where I called him a turd when everyone else was praising the deal. I couldn't find where I said 5th starter options couldn't produce 1 WAR. Could have said it, but can't find it. Do you remember the thread where you called the Jays a " No brainer" to finish last place and compared them to the Astros AAA team?
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 But can that beat Seager + Urias + Pederson? If the Dodgers get involved we're out. At least the Yankees and Red Sox won't be players (lack of prospects, lack of need). It'd be hard for any team to top that package. I'm not sure if the LAD would give up all three though.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 No, I don't remember the thread ... But it sounds like something I would have said. Jays are looking pretty good to make my prediction a reality. I'll bump it at the end of the season for you.
