According to a tweet from Morosi, jays and padres are in discussions on headley. Rosenthal added that some in jays org. Feel that the jays need a bat, not pitcher.

Gravity-defying balls up in the air, will they succumb to the Law or will they evade it and stay up for ever?

Chase Headley is playing injured. A change of scenery isn't going to magically repair his back and make him play better - FFS.

If Jays are really pursuing him for this year they are dumb as f***.

Anyone think the jays have enough for Price and Zobrist? I see the Rays are now going to wait right up until the break before deciding whether to trade them.

Do the jays take a chance they might get them, or try something else

The question is whether or not his "down year" is due to linger injury. This team has a habit of acquiring injured players or those who get injured or coming off an injury and never living up to what they should. I'm sure his power numbers would increase in Toronto but I won't hold my breath. If he comes cheap and they can resign him so it's not giving away a prospect, taking on money and then watching him go elsewhere it might be worth it to see what he can give the team.

What do you think he will cost? He's a free agent next year and is making 10M this year, probably shouldn't cost too much.

Headley back worries me.

I agree. I do wonder why his defense hasn't suffered as much as his offense, assuming the back issue is hurting his offense?

I think the fact that he's a rental makes him more attractive to Jays. I've said all off season and haven't changed my mind, they have little if any, budget room.

They don't have enough to get them, both in terms of $$$$ and prospects. I also don't think they're willing to trade the prospects even if they had the $$.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Jays have pieces to get Price the problem is his asking price will be higher if the Rays are going to trade him in the division. They'll take the best package they can get but I see them asking the Jays for a little more than say a club in any other division. It would be nice to have him but I can see it being an overpay no matter who gets him. Our farm has been plucked the past couple years. We already lack depth as is. I could see them asking for guys like Stroman, Sanchez, Norris, Lawrie etc. The price to acquire Price might really screw the farm system or what's left of it. Might take a 3rd team as well. It would be nice to have a guy like Price, an actual top of the rotation guy instead of wash ups like Dickey but considering the amount he might make next year, how much he might want for an extension, the price in prospects might make it a bad move. Some contracts start coming off the books in a couple years, so money might not be a problem down the road but will the Jays have the pieces in place in the next 3-5 years to justify giving up prospects, taking on whatever he might command in a form of extension (since 1.5 years is only worth it if the Jays make the playoffs) and if he'll want to stay. I don't want to see the team giving up some of our more finished prospects for a Price if he's going to walk or the team won't be able to compete in the next 2-5 years and it turn into a Halladay situation. But even if the Jays land him, give up a high price, they could always turn around and flip him in a year. The Jays just seem to have the same bad luck with injuries, players faltering at the wrong time, other teams making a push.

That doesn't even start the conversation for Price and Zobrist. You're talking Lawrie + Stroman.

Type B or C prospect & jays take on remainder of his salary

Possible injury, performance, expiring, wouldn't give up much more...

Obv padres would only do it bc nothing else/better is being offered...

Padres incentive is to wait since they'll prob get that deal worst case near the deadline by some team & might aa well hold out & try to get more...

Reality is Jays are desperate & Headley injured or otherwise Atleast has potential for upside other options don't -

I would never make a trade like that with the rays.

We'll be dominated by Sanchez and Norris every time we play them, guaranteed.

Elk, you may be right but we'll find out soon enough - if AA does zip, and the jays are within 5-6 games at the deadline, I would think that's the only conclusion...

Which if true isn't a shot at AA but whoever is calling the shots on freezing the budget

And even then, there's no reason to even think about going down that road.

I'd be surprised if Headley is a Jay for this reason unless the Padres eat a large portion of his salary. And that's not likely as it's San Diego. For the past 15-16 months, everything done (or not done) by AA suggests they're being squeezed financially. We hear from people how you can't complain about Rogers as Toronto has a top 10 payroll, but it's annoying that the funds were seemingly cut off after 2 dumb trades. You're spending money on a few position players and a couple pitchers? No bench allowed, no SP upgrades allowed. No 2B allowed. No right handed bat with some pop allowed. Also, don't forget the baragain deals Bautista and Encarnacion have. That should have played well into Toronto's favour, as those 2 on the open market would make much more. It hasn't and it looks like their talents will be wasted without even a freaking Wild Card birth, let alone a WS.

Oh well.

lol, people think it will cost nothing to get Headley. If that was ever the case, why would the Padres not keep him and get guaranteed draft pick compensation instead.

If the Jays are on the phone with the Padres, they should be talking about Kennedy first and foremost.

Could be sellers which means jays are 8+ Out of first/wildcard & AA & gibby are likely on the hot seat.

Good point about QO...I'd call that bluff though & IMO Padres & Headley want & need to go their separate ways

If you're Headley, do you not accept the QO given how guys like Drew, Cruz and Santana ended up signing so late?

Plus, I'm not sure the Padres would want to run the risk that Headley accepts the QO and have to pay him $14M?

Wouldn't the Pads have to offer him close to 13/14m to get the Compensation pick?

My guess with his age, time spent with the Pads & no other offers being close financially he'd re-sign and wipe out the Comp pick.
