Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 No but McGowan was. That didn't turn out well what about Romero how fast did he lose it. Cecil was a top prospect and we heard for years from Wilner on how Cecil will be 1A to Halladays 1. This team has the equivalent of manram/Ortiz of the early 2000s. Redsox turned into multiple championships. Jays are about to waste Encarnacion n Bautista I agree on Bautista/EE, we probably never see a combo like that for at lest the next decade if not more. That being said, McGowan was drafted years ago, you can just count random picks, there has to be a timeline. As for Romero, sure he was regarded well and he did provide value and now it's all over. Cecil had potential, but was brought in as a closer, and guess what he in now in the pen, coincidence? Sanchez has ace stuff (granted I'm not his biggest fan) and Norris has donee more than most top prospects to this point. You can't just throw a blanket on all prospects and call them the same.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Was Cecil or Marcum ever regarded as high as Sanchez or Norris? Plus we have Nolin ready once he gets healthy. Not to mention Dickey and Buehrle under contract next season as well to help bridge the transition. Cecil and Marcum did have success at the Major league level which Sanchez and Norris have not. I think that counts a lot. Like some have mentioned i'd like to see a rotation of FA starter Stroman Hutchison Buehrle Dickey Then you have Sanchez Norris and Nolin as depth in case of injuries.

Anyways I am not upset about the deal. The Jays simply did not have the prospects. Furthermore, I dont think that Shark is that good, and a starter shouldn't be on the top of the Jays list. Having said all that, its time to pull the trigger. What bothers me is the waiting. By not addressing the position player issue, this team is throwing games away. Is there any plan to help us with the lefties, cause we face two more in Anaheim. So what is Alex's plan? Send Glenn and Mastro out there against lefties and hope for the best?

Jays Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Yup, we don't need a SP. If we do get one, get a cheap one like Colon. Come 2016, we could have one of the best and cheapest rotations in baseball. Haha, I remember when we used to say that about 2014, back in 2012.... and then AA happened
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Sanchez and Norris have not had an opportunity yet, so let's be fair. That is true but kinda furthers my point. When you look at how many pitching prospects make it and how long it takes, you have to be pretty careful in expecting them to contribute. This coming from a huge Norris fan who thinks he could be ready early next season.

Send Glenn and Mastro out there against lefties and hope for the best? Other GMs probably see the Blue Jays weaknesses and are asking for the moon because they know they still have plenty of time to trade their assets. Like the Houston thing we saw the Astros asked for a ridiculous package for Bud Norris before they had to deal him. If the Padres asked for Sanchez for Headley I would really hope AA says no which I am sure he has. The Padres still have a month for Headley to build up more trade value unless they get a deal that is too good to pass up.
StevieRay Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 now A's have a surplus of SP, how about we trade for jesse chavez or tommy milone?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 now A's have a surplus of SP, how about we trade for jesse chavez or tommy milone? I wouldn't say that is an upgrade over our starters we have now. Also doubt As would trade to a team they could potentially face in the playoffs. They are probably better keeping them as depth.
Eddiek19 Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 So for the As is Tommy Milone out of a job? Assuming they keep Gray, Kazmir and Chavez in the rotation. Jays wouldn't matchup as good partner, but I thought he was fantastic on the mound today. Good looking lefty Beane will flip him to am NL club for a haul that turns out to be better than the one he sent to the Cubs. That's how he rolls.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I wouldn't mind seeing the Jays go after one of the A's excess starters now...
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Beane will flip him to am NL club for a haul that turns out to be better than the one he sent to the Cubs. That's how he rolls. That would be pretty hard to do. At least on paper, it's an excellent haul. Russell might be a bit overrated but Straily is probably very underrated at this point and the overall package was strong.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 bump. Didn't see this thread before starting one, my fault. Wow the A's just got extremely deep in SP. They are the team to beat now. I think they just got their playoff rotation at least. And have some injury depth but what they had prior to this was going to look good because of some shiny home splits but wasn't very good at all.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I wouldn't mind seeing the Jays go after one of the A's excess starters now... Really would you overpay for Chavez or Milone? I don't think either are a significant upgrade on Happ moving forward.
GNick Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Sounds like great trade for A's. Thing is with minor leaguers there is a risk but major leaguers you know what you are getting. We traded Halladay, best arm in baseball at the time, and never got nothing back. Drabek was the backbone of the deal. He blew his arm out while Halladay went on to win Cy Youngs and pitch no-hitters. No doubt puts Oakland in driver's seat as AL champs.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 The Cubs pretty much have CJ Edwards/Pierce Johnson and that's it as far as pitching prospects go. Both are having underwhelming/injury bitten years as well. I would love to try and flip Sanchez/Norris for an infielder (Bryant isn't going anywhere, but Baez could be a nice buy-low candidate). It makes sense for both clubs and we can probably get good value taking advantage of their need for SP youth. The Cubs could always end up moving Bryant to RF and Baez at 3B. Still have to move one of Russell/Castro though. Alcantara would be a nice target. Pretty much MLB ready and can play SS, 2B and CF. Been wanting the Jays to go after him for a while.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 So what was the actual price for just Shark? It seems to me that getting Hammel as well makes the price seem less steep.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 So 2 rumoured SP options are gone in one fell swoop. Hopefully AA can get McCarthy for very cheap.
labadee Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I'd take the Cubs side easily. i'd rather have the team going to the playoffs
Caper Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 So 2 rumoured SP options are gone in one fell swoop. Hopefully AA can get McCarthy for very cheap. Why? He is not very good this year. Hardly better then what we have now.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Why? He is not very good this year. Hardly better then what we have now. Because he's been better than you think and I'm hoping he won't cost much. I'd actually prefer it if AA addressed the IF and found a RH bat to platoon with Lind, but I won't hold my breath. We'll see what happens.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Really would you overpay for Chavez or Milone? I don't think either are a significant upgrade on Happ moving forward. More like Pomeranz, though yeah doesn't make much sense
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Why? He is not very good this year. Hardly better then what we have now. McCarthy has actually been very good this season. Look past the 5 ERA and W-L record, and he's been an effective starter.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I'm not that upset... It's becoming more and more clear game after game that this team needs a bat, and badly. This rotation has been much better than expected, and if Morrow comes back healthy, him and Sanchez are our insurance. The rotation looks young, cheap, and full of potential going forward. 2B or 3B please!
DH12 Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Wow A's stole both those pitchers from right under AA's nose. Huge win for oakland. Jays shut out completely

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 You have no idea how to evaluate pitching performance I guess. Naw, McCarthy actually hasn't been good this year. You can look at all the sabermetrics you want but results are results. When he's getting hit, he's getting hit extremely hard. McCarthy is reminding me of Morrow in that sense. Everyone thought Morrow was good because he showed flashes of brilliance and his fip or xfip or whatever was outperforming his ERA. But the fact was he was mixing in some completely awful pitches that were not fooling anyone.
