billjc33 Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Baseball players are babied enough already. Arms are blowing up everywhere, why not get what you can out of them. Sure he has been erratic at best this year but he has legit stuff that plays at the big league level. 19 year old kids can play top level in almost all pro sports but don't even think about it in baseball they need to work there way through the system. Its ******** if the kid can play the kid can play. I would much rather see Sanchez come up as a kid with huge potential and try and figure it out then watch Happ with 7 years at the big leagues try and figure it out.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 While walking the bases loaded twice a game. We have one of those...its called Dickey, Sanchez cant be worse

So if you had a game today your saying you would start Sanchez over Happ?

BallsDeep Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 What was Gibbons supposed to say? "No he has no chance of helping us." Don't put too much stock into it.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 It still sends the wrong message throughout the org. Poor performance is rewarded with a promotion. I hope this move was done because of the aforementioned reasons of better coaching at the AAA level and not because they want him in the majors at some point this year. He is still 2 years away at least. f***. He'll be 22 in 3 weeks... and GM ECJF wants him in the minors for AT LEAST 2 more years? If he shows more control, he can contribute in a month. Even if he goes up and fails, it's no big deal.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Oh, Sanchez CAN be worse. Much worse.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I'm catching a series of FisherCats games when they'll be in Portland in July. I was hoping to catch a Sanchez start and was really looking forward to seeing the Mookie Betts in the flesh. Now they've both been promoted. I hope Norris gets the promotion to AA because both rosters are looking pretty barren right now.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Oh, Sanchez CAN be worse. Much worse. Right... and he could be better. Much better.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Yep, Sanchez could walk the park and have to come out in the second. Which near-ensures a loss and taxes the entire staff. Once Major League hitters realize you can't find the strike zone consistently, they just stop swinging and take until a walk. We saw it with Ricky Romero. It's not like Romero hits the backstop or bounces the ball halfway to the plate every other pitch, it's that his level of strike-throwing is below the threshold needed for hitters to consider swinging in hitter's counts. You can't succeed at all without being able to throw strikes when you want to. Happ > Sanchez at the moment. So using your argument.... Sanchez > Dickey

These guys should be able to dominate at each level before getting promoted. Would the Cardinals promote Aaron Sanchez if he struggled this badly in AA?

Would the Cardinals promote Aaron Sanchez if he struggled this badly in AA? I don't know. I don't really buy the theory that he needs to dominate at each level. He needs better control and he will dominate at any level. Go to the level where the hitters are closest to major league and learn control against them.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 3.82 ERA, 14 GS, 66 IP, 4.7 IP/GS, 52 H, 57 K, 40 BB, 7.8 K/9, 1.43 K/BB, 1.39 WHIP Apparently that mess of a stat line equates to "dominating the level" And that is only after his last 2 starts made him look much better than he's been all season long. -------------------- Maybe there was something mechanical they fixed, and they believe the last 2 starts are indicative of this change and can be repeated. Or maybe they don't feel he's getting the appropriate coaching at the AA level and they have someone in mind who can work with him at AAA. But the dude has been far ... far from "dominant" in AA. Sometimes, players need to fail even more than they have before they adjust. I remember reading that Jake Marisnick's promotion to AA New Hampshire in 2012 was done because it was felt that he would have to faill against better competition before he would make the necessary adjustments. As has been pointed out before, there are more veterans in AAA and the level overall is probably a lot less swing happy. This could be one of those it's going to get worse before it gets better kind of scenarios. Overall, the team has to be losing a bit of patience with this guy. Every year we ask if it's the year he's going to turn it around. Last year, everyone was comparing him to Syndergaard and saying that he was the one with the bigger upside. This year, he was being compared to Stroman and again he's the one with the bigger upside. But whatever upside those other players have, at least they took the next step and look closer to realising it while Sanchez's upside remains largely theoretical. He's still pretty young, he still has good stuff but the longer it takes for him to turn it around and become a real pitcher, the least likely it seems that he will do it. Maybe he just needs to hit bottom.
43211234 Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I don't get all the negativity about this move. A pitcher going from AA to AAA is basically a non-story.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 5.5 BB/9 Makes sense to me If the Jays had Sanchez only throwing fastballs and preventing him from using off speed stuff this year, I'll cut him slack on the poor numbers.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Can we stop reading too much into this? The Jays promoted Stroman and with roster juggling and injuries in AAA were an arm short there. That to me means two things. One, they intend to keep Stroman up with the team, and two Sanchez was the best of all the options to make that jump. If it was just for a start or two, I'd assume they would have either covered it internally or brought Walters up for a start or two in AAA.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 remember when forum scouts got on miami for calling up fernadez? Wasn't it funny how wrong they were. It was also funny that Fernandez was killing AA.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 It was also funny that Fernandez was killing AA. Fernandez never threw a pitch in AA. He had a 3.01 SIERA in 55 IP at the high A level. Pretty questionable decision making but it obviously worked out.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 AA > AAA AAA is a major league storage bin; tons of crappy veterans and injured players. If Sanchez can throw strikes and manage his stamina he can destroy AAA. This is such a fallacy. AAA hitters are better than AA hitters, and AAA pitchers are better than AA hitters, so why people think AA is better for prospects is a mystery to me. AA is supposed to separate the wheat from the chaffe, but it doesn't mean that AA is a higher skill level of baseball as a whole.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Disagree. Nolin is the next in the line. Nolin is already in AAA. He can't be promoted there again to take up two spots.
