TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2014 Author Posted June 26, 2014 Did the Blue Jays mess up again with their first-round picks? Will they be stuck not being able to sign Jeff Hoffman and Max Pentecost? I am not sure what happens with them when they draft in the first round, but they seem to misjudge whether they will sign with them or not. If they do not sign these two picks again, will they get the 10th and 12th overall picks next year as well as their own? -- Bob, Calgary, Alberta Why do people have to be so suicidal when it comes to anything relating to this team?
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Why do people have to be so suicidal when it comes to anything relating to this team? History with 2 of the last 3 years plus no playoff appearance for over twenty years I guess??
theblujay Verified Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Ok is the 11th pick protected or not? I thought it was two years protection but mayo said it isn't.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 I can't see Hoffman not signing. If he's heading for TJ surgery he'd have to be really stupid not to. That means he'd re-enter the draft next year as a senior while not having pitched in the past year.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Ok is the 11th pick protected or not? I thought it was two years protection but mayo said it isn't. Just one year
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Keith Law quite emphatically said it was changed in the last cba to two years protection. So there is a conflict between Mayo and Law
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 It's not about what KLaw says or what Mayo says. The CBA says that teams get two years of protection.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 It's not about what KLaw says or what Mayo says. The CBA says that teams get two years of protection. I believe that is the answer, but I can't find the section of the cba
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Mr callis agrees that it is two years per the cba
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Mr callis agrees that it is two years per the cba Thanks. Callis > Goldstein = Parks > Law > Mayo
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 History with 2 of the last 3 years plus no playoff appearance for over twenty years I guess?? If they followed other teams they'd realize the Jays aren't the center of the Baseball Universe and there's other teams who don't win the World Series every year.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Thanks. Callis > Goldstein = Parks > Law > Mayo Agree callis is the best. I like Law a bit more than you though. I'd say callis>Goldstein=parks=Law>>Mayo

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2014 Author Posted June 27, 2014 Hasn't this been posted 3+ times in this thread? How are people not understanding? I had to mention it like 40 times last year as well. Though that's a bit more understandable, since the change had just been introduced. Still pretty bad when someone like Mayo doesn't know the rule. Key22 Verified Member Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I see a lot of lower picks unsigned - is there anyone besides the first two picks that are deemed to be tough signs or players who will go well above slot if the do sign? Any of the lower picks that you really don't want to lose?
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 I see a lot of lower picks unsigned - is there anyone besides the first two picks that are deemed to be tough signs or players who will go well above slot if the do sign? Any of the lower picks that you really don't want to lose? There are five big guys that are pretty much impossible signs at this point; Weisenberg, Latz, Pop, Papierski and Lugbauer. Then there are three good ones that already have signed, or are looking like they will be signing, in Dusty and Todd Isaacs (no relation), and Gunnar Heidt. And then there's Tanner Houck. Houck is one of the best prospects we drafted, and he is open to signing, so I would think he's the Jays best bet (basically seems to be in the exact same boat as Tellez was last year; quite hard to sign, but open to the possibility). If the Jays do end up with some savings, look for most of those dollars to be used on locking up Houck and Heidt, and probably also go towards guys like Dusty and Todd. Not sure they'll have enough left over to get Winemiller, don't have any idea what his signability is like, but he's another guy I would like to see signed.

Any of the guys we won't sign have the potential to be high first rounders in the future, like we've seen before?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Any of the guys we won't sign have the potential to be high first rounders in the future, like we've seen before? Yeah, like Weaver, Bryant and co. But you can't blame us for not signing these guys, they're dead set on going. it was surprising we even took fliers on them period. If we even signed one of them I'd be shocked/thrilled.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Need to sign the mighty Quinn !
Camps Verified Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Hoffman for slot, per Heyman @JonHeymanCBS now #jays sign rhp jeff hoffman for slot $. 1st rounder
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 NICE!!! Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi · 4m #BlueJays sign first-rounders Jeff Hoffman and Max Pentecost
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 very surprised they didn't push until the deadline guess they are true ballers and want in now.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Very nice. Did Pentecost sign for slot? "@JonHeymanCBS Pentecost gets slot $ from #jays also. Terrific hitter at kennesaw st."
Qwerty Verified Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 That's pretty disappointing. Wish we saved more money in this draft, to sign some of the later round picks. Terrible drafting when we took ZZ.... Its not terrible drafting. You need backups in case guys dont sign/they randomly get hurt. Teams do it every year.
SJE32 Verified Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 The ZZ not signing really stings now. Basically throwing away $190,000 in cap space.
