John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Watching Gose today against LHP reminded me of Major League: "Willie Mays Hayes. I hit like Mays, and I run like Hayes." - Willie Mays Hayes "You may run like Hayes. but you hit like s***." - Lou Brown I think he is learning this, buts all about contact and OBP for him to stick. He has tantalizing tools. I don't think he can learn what he needs to learn in AAA. You can't learn to adjust to great breaking balls in AAA since pretty much nobody there has great breaking balls.

Although his contact rate is only slightly below average. Which is promising so far.

He has exceeded the "law of diminishing returns" in AAA. He didn't look great this eve. He can change a game so many ways though. I am a Colby fan but just not missing that big K rate in the line up these days for obvious reasons.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 The fact that both Gose and Rasmus are LHB does pose an issue. I like Gose, but Pillar hit LHP pretty well in the minors. We'll see what happens.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Is that bet still on when Tim Collins gets his first MLB save? Nobody is gonna forget that guarantee until Collins gets a save one day, or he retires. There's always injuries in the pen, a day off for the closer and the hits or 4th guy down the chart will get a chance and luck out a save. That's probably how Timmy is going to have to get it, and he has all kinds of time to do it.

Someone posted that the Jays just traded a future closer and instead of saying if he ever becomes a closer....I wrote "if he ever gets a save"...and you know the rest. Good chance that Tiny Tim is closing in Omaha this year the way he is pitching.
wanderer Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Rasmus is an incredibly frustrating player, which stats just can't highlight. He's an above average CF with the bat and with the glove but he is prone to head-scratching plays, on both sides of the ball. I think we can all see how great he could be, but will likely never be. That being said, he is going to command a nice contract this offseason, and I would rather allocate the money elsewhere and see if Gose can handle the role. If he was traded, I could see it being a 3-team deal.
shortstop Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 quick glance at the standings/stats of CF on certain teams, could see the following teams wanting Rasmus if they're in the playoff hunt: a) Twins Mariners c) Phillies d) nationals

Last nights 0/4 with 2 Ks wont be an isolated line for this kid. The main advantages he is has is he is CHEAP and you have the possibility of offensive upside. Pair that with +D and speed vs the cost of the Colby package = we need to move Rasmus if possible.
shortstop Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 part of the issue is expectations...with Gose, they are very minimal - bat #9, get on base once in a while, heck bunt every other time at the plate & we'll be content, speed & play amazing defence with a great arm...with Rasmus, want/expect him to be Mr. Baseball who does everything since he has most of the tools...and of course, league minimum $'s vs. what will likely be an annual salary for rasmus of $15M...
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 To me its obvious: a platoon of Pillar/Gose going forward is likely almost as good offensively (less power but more speed and obp) yet way, way cheaper. And better D when Gose in CF. Versus lefties Pillar is far superior offensively to Rasmus with a slight defensive disadvantage. I think Pillar can hit .300 and ops .800 vs lefties. Gose can hit well enough vs righties (.250/.300/.400) and play better D in CF to make the $15 mill better spent on pitching as opposed to keeping Colby. Besides this offense has more than enough power. Speed doesn't slump, and Colby is probably the streakiest player I've ever seen. Plus with the Pillar/Gose platoon the other is our 4th OF. Trade Colby at the deadline if you can get better value than the conditional pick. Im not sure im into the platoon with these young players. That can marginalize their asset value and development. Ok with trading Colby at deadline with caveat you suggest. He is hard to value right now given his all or nothing start. GMs will wonder if he is 2013 Colby with upside or a regression to 2012 Rasmus.

flafson Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 By the way, what do you guys think about extending Rasmus and then trading him? Once he's not a rental tool his value should go up. Has AA done something like that in the past?

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) Given his all or nothing start he has regressed in value from 2013 IMO. Still his agent has to think, given what Upton and Jones got, he has a shot at 3-5 year deal at 11-15 mm per, depending on how 2013 closes for him. There is no harm in AA seeing if Colby is interested in reducing his risk, but it would have to be a pretty solid Jays friendly extension to be worth our risk. We have other considerations at the same time such as Melky, Casey, Morrow option, Reyes hits 22mm etc etc just my view Edited May 28, 2014 by BigCecil

I think you're a bit optimistic on Pillar, and maybe a bit down on Gose with those projections. I don't see Pillar putting up an .800 OPS even in split duty, nor do I see Gose OBPing only .300 if he faces righties exclusively, conversely .400 SLG might be a bit much from him...

Given how much value he can provide defensively, I might actually be fine with Gose every day and Pillar used strictly as a reserve or a platoon DH. Whenever Gose isn't in CF, I miss having him there. The Jays may grow to feel the same way.

I don't know what a half a season of Gump is worth but i think someone may want him.

I don't know what a half a season of Gump is worth but i think someone may want him. The problem is that no one is going to trade you immediate help for Rasmus. Anyone who wants Rasmus for half a season will want to deal in prospects and keep their Major League assetts. Best case scenario is a three way trade but I think in all likelihood, Rasmus gets a Q.O. from the Jays at the end of the season. Gose could still do a lot for the team in a reserve role.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 So I just had this Gose story sent to me from a friend. I'll just cut and paste (leaving out my commentary). Not the best PR from a guy on a team on a winning streak. There is a lot you can read into the story though. we go out to underground afterwards gose shows up alone no one recognizes him or says s*** after about 20 mins i go up and i'm like hey man sweet can i get a selfie he just bluntly says no...and only no. not like....sorry man not feeling it or sorry don't wanna be bothered just plainly no i feel like he may have gotten pranked by someone on the team like some guys said they'd go to underground then went somewhere else and he was just left sitting there but either way be a pro when mark was down in dunedin in 2013 they asked him for an autograph and he said no then too well if he's smart he'll figure it all out we're unlikely to extend rasmus he is probably our guy next year and for the next few years
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Ty Cobb was a dick by all accounts. Doesn't mean he didn't help his team.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Ty Cobb was a dick by all accounts. Doesn't mean he didn't help his team. Give him two more seasons and he passes Cobb in career K's too...that will be the last time the two get mentioned in the same sentence. What I read into that is he really doesn't want to be here. 1. He's going to a bar alone during a big winning streak. 2. He's not thinking about his PR in the city that controls his major league life for the next 5 years. Players have bad days (Rios' one bad day cost him playing here as he was one of the most fan friendly guys prior to that incident) but I'll read something more into this. Good chance I'm wrong...but it won't stop me from speculating it's part of the fun of baseball ... and I never believe I'm wrong.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 There may be some other dicks on the Toronto Blue Jays. They can't all be super nice, all of the time. Well, maybe Kawasaki when he is up.
shortstop Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 a) maybe it wasn't in fact gose perhaps he just didn't want a photo taken of him at the underground - if he had been asked on the street, maybe he says yes c) he only says no b/c he's actually brilliant & some crazy nut could be recording him & then posting it on the internet d) he's there to pick up & have a 1 night stand & he won't anyone get in his way e) your friend had been eyeing him for 20 min, Gose picked up on that and felt, you know, weirded out f) your friend's intro was "hey man sweet"...enough said? I don't know, i'm just brainstorming & taking the other side of the argument

I don't know, i'm just brainstorming & taking the other side of the argument Having met several of the Rays last year, I can tell you that there is a right way to respond to every situation (they stopped a group from getting kicked out the bar, for a guy puking, just because 2 guys in the group had Rays gear on). For all he knows Adam is a blogger about the Jays (which he is, although not active). He's probably best completing his sentence at least. The job could be his next year and yes hitting will endear him to the fans more than anything...but being nice to fans should be much easier for him than hitting well. Seriously, how many people on this board thinks that Rios is a big *******? All because of one incident. When that happened the girls from the old board posted all these things that he did for the fans. None of that matters cause struggling at the plate and having one bad incident can ruin a players rep. Being a fan favourite (ie. Lawrie) also buys you several future incidents.
GNick Verified Member Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Trade Rasmus for pitching. Team has excelled since he been out of lineup.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 What is "the underground"? Sounds sketchy as hell Hardcore rave club for post-op trannies. AKA Hurl's home away from home.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Probably should've read the story about Gose at The Underground before assuming it was a story about Hurl at The Underground. He just looks like an *******. He's a young, cocky kid. As long as he plays hard it's all good.

Pillar's just weird looking, but Gose and Rasmus are ugly men.
