ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 One idea against Buffalo is if he's ready to face mlb hitting, he's getting his feet wet. Not saying I'm shooting down everything you suggest I'm just saying it's not some no-brainer move I can accept that they may be easing him into MLB, but at what point do his feet get wet? Remember, Hutchison is also likely to be on an even shorter IP limit since he threw around 60 innings in 2013 as he came back from TJS, so I guess he should've been in the bullpen to start the year. Anyway, we'll see what happens.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Gibbons on Stroman's role: “I like where he’s at right now,” manager John Gibbons says. “The rotation’s doing pretty good, so we’ll see where it goes.” “He’s like a new toy, really” Gibbons says. “He’s a young arm, but you can’t get carried away.”

Personally I would want to see MS start right now.. I was just saying I'm not calling AA incompetent for doing another way. I would call him incompetent for other reasons though. He's definitely built an underwhelming team dollar-for-dollar

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 “He’s like a new toy, really” Gibbons says. “He’s a young arm, but you can’t get carried away.” says the manager that just got beat over 8 innings by a 22 year old. Limiting innings is not a proven science at all but assuming the Jays subscribe to percentage increases each season...what does this mean for Stroman next year? At least make sure he's getting to your prescribed limit!!!

He's definitely built an underwhelming team dollar-for-dollar They're trying to get some sort of return on their Happless investment, that's how I see it, even if it hurts their team. It's not about trying to ease a young pitcher into MLB or limiting his IP. If it was, why wouldn't this apply to Hutchison? Hutchison is 9 months older than Stroman; was rushed from AA in 2012 after 6 starts and 31IP at that level; threw only around 60 IP last year coming back from TJS. Anyway...let's hope they see the light soon.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Here's the story by BNS on the Jays following the Cards' lead with Stroman: http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-follow-cardinals-lead-with-stroman/ Problem is, the Cards, as mentioned by Mozeliak, had strong rotations, but BNS didn't point that out to second guess the Jays.
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Would a team even just give us a bag of balls for Happ and take his entire contract?
spats Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 This is the second game in a row that they pulled Norris after 4 and 2/3rds.I was at the last game and he was visibly upset. Why can't let him at least go 5...don't understand this philosophy. Let's just piss off our best prospects to prove a point.

The_DH Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Dont rely on Gibbons for a comment. He's a retread that doesn't belong.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 That's the thing, even if Stroman is on a IP limit, which is fine, you have to give yourself the best possible chance at actually being in the race and we know Happ is not the answer. Anyway... If the Jays are and might possibly be in contention. And if Stroman is on an innings limit, I'd rather the opposite of what the Nats did with Strasburg. I'd rather slowly infuse Stroman early in the year and be able to pitch into September and possibly October than to slot a mediocre POS arm in when the games are tighter and possibly pitching in the playoffs and have Stroman shut down.

Not sure how many innings they think they can get out of him. they should already know the date of when he could start regularly and be ok until October. It would be interesting to know what that date would be. I'm not sure Redmond isn't better than Happ. Happ is brutal because he has to be on the edges all day with his stuff, but he doesn't have the control to do it.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Games now = games in Sept. But do they have other options that can win games now? Do we really need to watch Happ be horrible for 5-6 games before they make a move? Stroman needs to pitch every 5th day whether he is in the bigs or AAA. having him rott in the pen is not really going to keep him sharp.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 Games now = games in Sept. In statistical terms, Yes. I'd rather have my best team now and not in September when I will be in the last place.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I agree. We need him starting now. If they want to save innings then let him do 4 innings starts for another month in AAA and then bring him up. They just have to have someone better than Happ as an option or else it wont matter in 2 months.

The point I was making there is that they hurt their chances of being in contention by having a s***** pitcher in the rotation in May. For the record, I don't think they're trying to limit Stroman's innings. If they were, why wouldn't this apply to Drew Hutchison? Remember, Hutchison was rushed after 6 AA starts. Hutchison also only pitched around 60 total innings in 2013 while coming back from TJS so again, why would they have an IP limit on Stroman and not on Hutchison who's only 9 months older than Stroman? John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 IIRC, AA has said that Stroman, Hutch and Nolin are all not on an IP limit. I recall that about Nolin and hutch, but not about Stroman. I could be misremembering though.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 (edited) Was listening to the game on the radio today when Wilner was calling the game in the 6th and7th I think and he was talking about how twitter was raging that Happ should be out of the rotation and he and Ward were derping about how you can't really judge a guy on two starts.... Two starts? What about the entirety of his work with the Jays which has been enough to show that he's just not good enough to be in a major league rotation with playoff aspirations? Edited May 11, 2014 by John_Havok
flafson Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Happ has been either good or really bad, his inability to put guys away leads to high pitch count and when things aren't going his way it's a down hill very quickly.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Atleast AA knew he was dumping crap on the Astros. Wojo might be the only one who does something. Thanked just because of your avatar picture, girl in blue jays shirt are sexy! Can't make out her face much but very nice shirt.

shortstop Verified Member Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Jonn, I agree he hasn't and doesn't look happy here...did he start right away after coming over? imo, it started the moment he realized the jays felt he was on the 'bubble' as a 5th starter...and he's been in that should we start him or have him be a long man conversation ever since...Happ believes he's earned the right to be a starter and imo, feels there should be no debate about it... any case, I haven't liked his body language, verbiage nor his performance for some time & he needs to go imo.
shortstop Verified Member Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 also, imo, think Gibby has had enough of Happ...when Happ was taken out by Gibby, it seemed to me that was one of the last times Happ would pitch as a blue jay...gibby had the you've nothing for me all season pissed off expression on his face & he's had it with him...
