reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Let's be honest here, we are all mad they didn't do anything in the off-season which is frustrating but they're still pretty good. The Jays have an elite lineup and the return of Hutchison has made their rotation somewhat respectable. The defence seems to not make boneheaded plays like what we saw last year, and their bullpen is off to a rough start but I think we can all agree their pen will be fine for the long haul. I wouldn't consider them favourites, but I wouldn't count them out for a division title either.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 The playoffs should be easy to make. No I specifically avoided saying that lol. I'm just sharing some optimism. Last season the board was way too high on them, and this season it seems they are too low on them, in my opinion.
Governator Community Moderator Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 No one has ever questioned the offensive strength of the Jays with a healthy line up. It's the inconsistent pitching & lack of depth that'll prevent this team from being a contender but they're still fun to watch and plan parades regardless.
admin Site Manager Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 This team can be good. Can is the keyword. It has to have everything click, and we're never that lucky to have everything click. Our pitchers are too inconsistent to ever go on a solid run.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 0.500 team IMO. They'll have stretches where they look awful and stretches where they look like a playoff team. well you had them as 71 win team at the beginning of the year, maybe by year end you'll have them as a 90 win team.

Our pitchers are too inconsistent to ever go on a solid run. 4 out of the last 5 games the Jays have lost were due to the bullpen blowing 2 and 3 plus run leads when handed the game in the 7th.....it hasn't just been one pitcher...it's been cecil, loup, delabar and Sanchez. Were these typical or a-typical type performances? Given the past couple years, these were rough patches and we can expect the bullpen to be better the moving forward, especially with Janssen coming back and it was good tonight. When Lindy comes and lawrie come back in a couple days the Jays will have all of their core guys in the lineup together at the same time for the first time this year. Things haven't all been clicking by any means for the Jays. The Jays starting pitching looks way better, the offense looks way better...only the bullpen has been worse and I think that will round into form, especially once Janssen gets back. The Jays have the best run differential in the AL East...yet only a handful of believers on this board that they can even be in contention come September. Kind of sad, really.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 No, I didn't. okay...you had them as a 78 win team....now you have them as an 81 win team. You are moving in the right direction

guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 The rotation isn't Happening for you right now? do you honestly think happ and mcgowan will hold up? i mean i get the whole "let em pitch until they start sucking" but this just oozes of the chien ming wang experiment from last year. not to mention dusty in the pen could be very useful

There's a chance, probably a small chance, that he's worse than Happ. But he could be decent, I don't see why they wouldn't at least give him a few starts to see how he looks up here.
crmr Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 They definitely have one of the better lineups, so if they can put up 6+ runs in a lot of games they should have a decent chance. If .500 is your expectation it's not too crazy to think they can get up into the 87 win range by getting a bit lucky, then it's more luck to make it! Overall they are still one of the better teams in the AL, it's just how they manage through the division. A couple tough losses to Pittsburgh does hurt, but they are leading in run differential in the East so far, and I believe they were 11 games back at this point last year, so definitely some reason for optimism still.

shortstop Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 consistency is what would keep this team from contending for a playoff spot. this team needs to get 5+ games above .500 before I get any hopes up.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 LMFAO You're such a retard!!! Bts predicted 78 wins in the annual prediction win thread which is 6 games under .500 and in this thread he said they were an 81 win team. I just stated he is becoming more optimistic about what the team will achieve. I guess that makes me a retard.

And by the way, the Jays have the least amount of errors in MLB. I'm never a fan of being overly optimistic of anything in life. I didn't understand what having the least amount of errors meant? It definitely doesn't mean the best defensive team.
Smedley Butler Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 LMFAO You're such a retard!!! Dude's old. Senility is a fact of life. It'll happen to most of us if we're unfortunate enough to live to such a decrepit old age. Nobody has caught his slip calling Santos Sanchez yet though, so he's ahead of the game thus far. Incidentally, I always picture the Oscar character from that Corner Gas show whenever this guy posts.
Bunchedundies Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 This team is so frustrating, they have blown big leads and threw away at least 5 games now, should be in first place. If they somehow stay healthy and the pitching gets better, it is a playoff team, BIG IF, I don't see this staff staying healthy. Need another starter at the minimum. This offense should be excellent/

You're right I am old, and I did type Sanchez when I meant Santos. f*** me getting old is tough! You young bucks wait until you have a nagging wife yelling at you in the background as you try and type messages. Mental brain farts are bound to happen. I won't even edit the post so everyone can see what a dumb dumb I was. You caught me..lol...and I love Oscar!

BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 I said this at the beginning of the year, looking at the AL East I don't see any teams that look that much better than anyone else, or that much worse. Looks pretty even to me, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. If this team can stay moderately healthy and (finally) be a bit lucky, they could be in the mix for something come August and September.

Listen, I know you're a nice guy and I really don't want to be an ass to you but sometimes to make it really hard not to. Do you actually think 3 less wins for a team that plays a 162 games is that much of a variation to call someone out based on it? Edited May 7, 2014 by Smokey
